Habit and nonhabit systems for unconscious and conscious behavior: implications for multitasking.

The study of human consciousness has demonstrated that there are both conscious and unconscious systems. Other work, particularly in animals, has shown that there are habit and nonhabit systems and that these involve different brain regions and memory processes. Here we argue that habits can be equated with unconscious behavior and nonhabits with conscious behavior. This equation makes the extensive physiological literature on habit/nonhabit relevant to the less tractable issue of consciousness. On the basis of this line of reasoning, it appears that different parts of the BG and different mem

Multitasking versus multiplexing: Toward a normative account of limitations in the simultaneous execution of control-demanding behaviors.

Why is it that behaviors that rely on control, so striking in their diversity and flexibility, are also subject to such striking limitations? Typically, people cannot engage in more than a few-and usually only a single-control-demanding task at a time. This limitation was a defining element in the earliest conceptualizations of controlled processing; it remains one of the most widely accepted axioms of cognitive psychology, and is even the basis for some laws (e.g., against the use of mobile devices while driving). Remarkably, however, the source of this limitation is still not understood. Her

Explainable Multitask Transformers for Early Detection of Smoking Behaviors and Lung Cancer Symptoms from Danish Electronic Health Records.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality, and early detection is challenging due to asymptomatic onset. Accurate detection of smoking behaviors and symptoms is essential for risk evaluation and timely intervention. This study developed multitask transformer-based models to simultaneously detect smoking status, pack-year, and lung cancer symptom categories from Danish electronic health records. Texts were annotated for smoking behaviors, and 16 lung cancer-related symptoms were grouped into six categories. Preprocessing and tokenization were performed, and three transformer

Robust Assessment of Free-Living Physical Behaviors and Activity Intensity Using Dual-Wearable Multitask Learning: Development and Evaluation Study From the Multicenter WEALTH Project.

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of physical behaviors (PBs) and activity intensity is essential for public health research and digital health monitoring. Wearable accelerometers combined with machine learning (ML) or deep learning (DL) enable objective behavior assessment, but most existing models are trained on laboratory data, limiting generalizability to free-living conditions. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate multitask ML and DL models for PB classification across 7 categories (sitting, standing, walking, running, sports, cycling, and lying) and activity intensity categ

Training conquers multitasking costs by dividing task representations in the frontoparietal-subcortical system.

Negotiating the information-rich sensory world often requires the concurrent management of multiple tasks. Despite this requirement, humans are thought to be poor at multitasking because of the processing limitations of frontoparietal and subcortical (FP-SC) brain regions. Although training is known to improve multitasking performance, it is unknown how the FP-SC system functionally changes to support improved multitasking. To address this question, we characterized the FP-SC changes that predict training outcomes using an individual differences approach. Participants (n = 100) performed singl

Building the multitasking brain: An integrated perspective on functional brain activation during task-switching and dual-tasking.

Multitasking behavior is associated with well-known performance costs, but the question of why individuals falter when attempting to manage multiple streams of information remains difficult to answer. One reason for this difficulty may be that multitasking costs are often characterized by isolating component processes that are studied largely independently. In this study, we instead integrate two commonly studied substrates of multitasking, task-switching and dual-tasking, within the same procedural context. This method allows not only a direct comparison of performance costs associated with d

Domain-general multitasking strategy developed from language experience: Neurobehavioral evidence from student interpreters.

Multitasking as a cognitive ability is significant, and yet few studies have investigated how to improve multitasking, especially by language experience. To investigate how language multitasking may enhance domain-general multitasking, this fMRI study compared interpreting students and matched bilingual controls in a non-linguistic dual-task (auditory Task 1, visual Task 2) and examined how their neural data may relate to behavioral performance. Behaviorally, interpreting students showed higher response-time costs in Task 1 but lower costs in Task 2, resulting in faster responses to dual-task

Glaucoma-Related Differences in Gaze Behavior When Negotiating Obstacles.

PURPOSE: Safe navigation requires avoiding objects. Visual field loss may affect how one visually samples the environment, and may thus contribute to bumping into objects and falls. We tested the hypothesis that gaze strategies and the number of collisions differ between people with glaucoma and normally sighted controls when navigating around obstacles, particularly under multitasking situations. METHODS: Twenty persons with moderate-severe glaucoma and 20 normally sighted controls walked around a series of irregularly spaced vertical obstacles under the following three conditions: walking w

Common and distinct neural correlates of dual-tasking and task-switching: a meta-analytic review and a neuro-cognitive processing model of human multitasking.

Although there are well-known limitations of the human cognitive system in performing two tasks simultaneously (dual-tasking) or alternatingly (task-switching), the question for a common vs. distinct neural basis of these multitasking limitations is still open. We performed two Activation Likelihood Estimation meta-analyses of neuroimaging studies on dual-tasking or task-switching and tested for commonalities and differences in the brain regions associated with either domain. We found a common core network related to multitasking comprising bilateral intraparietal sulcus (IPS), left dorsal pre

Industrialization Effect on Sleep and Sleep in Preindustrial Societies.

Everything that happens during wakefulness impacts sleep, and vice versa. Human behavior responds to the environment. With the advent of industrialization, various harmful systems have emerged that affect sleep quality, including artificial light, electronic devices, noise, inadequate eating habits, rotating work shifts, stress, sedentary behavior, multitasking, and information overload. Paradoxically, we owe some advances in sleep medicine to the use of electrical energy and digitization. This article analyzes these topics and addresses sleep in societies currently considered preindustrialize

Exploring Embodied Cognition and Brain Dynamics Under Multi-Tasks Target Detection in Immerse Projector-Based Augmented Reality (IPAR) Scenarios.

Embodied cognition explores the intricate interaction between the brain, body, and the surrounding environment. The advancement of mobile devices, such as immersive interactive computing and wireless electroencephalogram (EEG) devices, has presented new challenges and opportunities for studying embodied cognition. To address how mobile technology within immersive hybrid settings affects embodied cognition, we propose a target detection multitask incorporating mixed body movement interference and an environmental distraction light signal. We aim to investigate human embodied cognition in immers

Giving AI agents a sense of control facilitates reinforcement learning in multitasking scenarios.

Having to control multiple tasks in parallel poses challenges for humans and artificial agents alike. In artificial intelligence, specific forms of reinforcement learning (RL), most notably hierarchical and model-based RL, have shown promising results in scenarios where tasks or skills need to be switched adaptively. However, RL agents still encounter difficulties when faced with serial multitasking that involves switching control between continuously running subtasks, such as changing the radio station while driving in traffic. Inspired by human cognitive processes, we hypothesize that mainta

Effects of Mental Workload Manipulation on Electroencephalography Spectrum Oscillation and Microstates in Multitasking Environments.

INTRODUCTION: Multitasking during flights leads to a high mental workload, which is detrimental for maintaining task performance. Electroencephalography (EEG) power spectral analysis based on frequency-band oscillations and microstate analysis based on global brain network activation can be used to evaluate mental workload. This study explored the effects of a high mental workload during simulated flight multitasking on EEG frequency-band power and microstate parameters. METHODS: Thirty-six participants performed multitasking with low and high mental workloads after 4 consecutive days of trai

Clinical expertise shifts psychological distancing from effortful regulation to reduced engagement on internally oriented processing during multitasking.

BACKGROUND: Clinical decision-making often occurs under conditions of high cognitive load, emotional stress, and time pressure. Psychological distancing, an emotion-focused coping strategy involving the mental separation of oneself from emotionally stressful situations to reduce affective impact, supports affect regulation in such contexts; however, its neural implementation during realistic multitasking and the extent to which it is shaped by clinical expertise remain poorly understood. METHODS: We investigated the neural correlates of psychological distancing during high-risk multitasking c

Yawning as a behavioral marker of mild motion sickness and sopite syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Severe motion sickness is easily identifiable with sufferers showing obvious behavioral signs, including emesis (vomiting). Mild motion sickness and sopite syndrome lack such clear and objective behavioral markers. We postulate that yawning may have the potential to be used in operational settings as such a marker. This study assesses the utility of yawning as a behavioral marker for the identification of soporific effects by investigating the association between yawning and mild motion sickness/sopite syndrome in a controlled environment. METHODS: Using a randomized motion-coun

Influence of light-exposure during late incubation and early feeding on the performance of layer chicks in a multitasking test and step detour test.

During on-farm hatching, chicken embryos experience continuous light during late incubation, and have immediate access to feed and water post-hatch. While on-farm hatching compared to hatchery-hatching improves several welfare indicators in broilers, the combined effects of light exposure and early feeding on behavioral and cognitive development in broilers and layers remains unclear. On-farm hatching systems are expected to expand into the laying hen sector due to the advances regarding in ovo-sexing and vaccination technologies. We investigated effects of continuous light exposure from 18 un
