Mastomys (rodentia: muridae) species distinguished by hemoglobin pattern differences.

Hemoglobin electrophoresis patterns were found to be reliable markers for distinguishing two species of Mastomys in Sierra Leone having 32 and 38 chromosomes. All 32-chromosome animals exhibited a single hemoglobin pattern, whereas those with 38-chromosomes had four distinguishable patterns. Both karyotypes were present throughout Sierra Leone. The 38-chromosome species was more prevalent in the Guinea savanna zone to the north, while the 32-chromosome species was most dominant in human-modified high forest areas of the eastern and southern parts of the country. In almost all situations the 32

Exploring the Potential of Muridae as Sentinels for Human and Zoonotic Viruses.

In recent years, the transmission of viruses from wildlife to humans has raised significant public health concerns, exemplified by the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the betacoronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Human activities play a substantial role in increasing the risk of zoonotic virus transmission from wildlife to humans. Rats and mice are prevalent in urban environments and may act as reservoirs for various pathogens. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of zoonotic viruses in wild rats and mice in both urban and rural areas, focusing on well-known zoonotic viruses such as betacoronavirus, hantav

Parasite assemblages of Australian species of Pseudomys (Rodentia: Muridae: Murinae).

The parasite fauna of many Australian rodents is poorly known. The ectoparasite and helminth faunas of Pseudomys delicatulus, Pseudomys desertor, Pseudomys gracilicaudatus, and Pseudomys hermannsburgensis were determined and compared. In total, 12 species of arthropods, 2 cestodes, and 13 nematodes were found. Species richness of parasites was highest in P. hermannsburgensis and lowest in P. desertor. Despite the sampling effort, the number of parasite species discovered did not reach an asymptote for any of the host species, indicating that the full parasite fauna was not examined. Helminth s

Gene flow among Calomys musculinus (Rodentia, Muridae) populations in Argentina.

Calomys musculinus is a Sigmodontinae rodent inhabiting periodically disturbed habitats in the central eastern plains of Argentina. It is the natural reservoir host of Junin virus, the etiological agent of Argentine Hemorrhagic Fever (AHF). In order to analyze the levels of gene flow among populations of this species, allozymic variability at 26 loci was studied in 291 individuals from the endemic zone of AHF and localities outside it. All populations showed high levels of polymorphism (He between 0.107 and 0.144; P95% between 38 and 54%). Individual loci f values were in most cases negative,

Gerbillus nanus (Rodentia: Muridae): a new reservoir host of Leishmania major.

Gerbillus nanus Blanford, 1875 known as Baluchistan gerbil, is a granivorous solitary naked-footed species. No evidence of its natural infection with the protozoan parasite, Leishmania, has so far been provided. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a major public health problem in many parts of the world, including Iran. The annual nationwide incidence of human CL due to Leishmania major (CLM) in endemic rural areas was above 18,000 cases in 2008. The detection of L. major in rodents is of fundamental importance for incriminating them as potential reservoirs of CLM infection. Between April 2007 and

Studies on Rift Valley fever in some African murids (Rodentia: Muridae).

Brains, spleens and livers of 2214 murids, 27 shrews and 7 dormice, trapped at 7 sites in Rhodesia, were tested in 277 pools for the presence of Rift Valley Fever virus. There were no isolations of Rift Valley Fever, but 69 isolations of an unidentified virus were obtained. Sixteen out of 867 sera had low-titre haemagglutination-inhibition activity against Rift Valley Fever antigen, but only one out of 1260 sera had neutralizing antibody. The evidence suggests that murids fail to encounter infection in nature and are unlikely to play a role in circulation and dissemination of Rift Valley Fever

Persistent infection in Neotoma fuscipes (Muridae: Sigmodontinae) with Ehrlichia phagocytophila sensu lato.

Dusky-footed wood rats (Neotoma fuscipes Baird) and two species of Peromyscus mice (P. maniculatus Wagner and P. truei Shufeldt) were collected over a 16-month period from three sites in Sonoma County, California. Blood was collected from 93 wood rats and 177 mice and serum or plasma was tested for seroreactivity with Ehrlichia phagocytophila sensu lato (also known as the human granulocytic ehrlichiosis agent). Thirty-five (37.6%) wood rats and 15 (8.5%) mice were seropositive. Positive Neotoma serology by site ranged from 9.4% to 62.1%. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for the Ehrlichi

Protozoan parasites and pathological findings in Hydromys chrysogaster (Muridae: Hydromyinae) from Queensland.

Tissues from 23 Australian water rats (Hydromys chrysogaster) collected from five localities in central and northern Queensland, Australia, between February 1992 and May 1993, were examined for protozoan parasites and additional pathological changes. We found Klossiella hydromyos in the kidneys, Toxoplasma gondii in the brain and skeletal muscles and Sarcocystis sp. in the somatic musculature. Other pathological findings, including interstitial nephritis, interstitial pneumonia and a tongue abscess, as well as helminth-induced lesions in the lungs, mesenteries, stomach wall and cecal wall were

Comparative Analysis of Leukocyte Proportions and Morphology in Wild Muridae and Arvicolinae Rodents.

Hematological profiles of wild rodents provide important insights into their species-specific adaptations, physiological status, and immune responses. However, reference data for wild species remain limited since these are mainly derived from laboratory rodents. This study investigated the leukocyte composition and morphology in 113 wild rodents representing the family Muridae and the subfamily Arvicolinae from several regions of seven prefectures of Greece. Blood samples were collected from live-trapped individuals, and peripheral blood smears were analyzed using Giemsa staining. We evaluated

Molecular evolution of Trichuris muris isolated from different Muridae hosts in Europe.

A phylogeographic study was carried out of Trichuris muris, nematode parasitizing Murinae rodents from the Muridae family, isolated from four different hosts and from different geographical regions of Europe by amplification and sequencing of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 fragment of the ribosomal DNA. T. muris was found in the Apodemus sylvaticus, Apodemus flavicollis, Mus domesticus, and Rattus rattus rodents. The molecular results confirm the presence of DNA polymorphisms among T. muris isolates from Europe. The present study shows two clear-cut geographical and genetic lineages: one of them is widesp

Mite composition in nests of the Japanese wood mouse, Apodemus speciosus (Rodentia: Muridae).

Acari is a diverse group of arthropods that include well-known parasites of animals. Rodents, particularly, serve as common hosts of mites and ticks, transmitting pathogens to domestic animals and humans. Understanding the ecological dynamics between parasites and rodent hosts is crucial for ecosystem management. Due to limited knowledge about the life history of ectoparasites in wild mouse nests, we collected four nests of Apodemus speciosus, the most common rodent species in the wild areas of Japan, along with soil samples near the nests to study arthropod communities. Mites overwhelmingly p

Host and habitat shape ectoparasite diversity on Mastomys natalensis and Mastomys coucha (Muridae).

Mastomys natalensis and M. coucha are commensal rodent species endemic to Africa. A recent taxonomic revision within Mastomys leaves the parasite–host list of M. natalensis questionable and that of M. coucha incomplete. The current study aimed to develop a better understanding of the ectoparasite diversity associated with the 2 distinct but closely related rodent species and to explore the influence of host and habitat type on ectoparasite infestations. Between 2014 and 2020, 590 rodents were trapped in 3 habitat types (village, agriculture and natural) across a wildlife-human/domestic animal

Bartonellae of the Namaqua rock mouse, Micaelamys namaquensis (Rodentia: Muridae) from South Africa.

The aim of this study was to determine Bartonella prevalence and diversity in Namaqua rock mice, Micaelamys namaquensis, a species endemic to South Africa, which can attain pest status. A total of 100 heart samples collected monthly from March to December were screened for Bartonella genome presence using three primer sets targeting the citrate synthase (gltA) gene, the NADH dehydrogenase gamma subunit (nuoG) gene and the RNA polymerase β-subunit-encoding gene (rpoB). An overall prevalence of 44% was obtained, with no statistically significant differences or correlations between infection rate

Gallegostrongylus australis n. sp. (Nematoda: Angiostrongylidae) from Muridae in Australia, with zoogeographical considerations.

Gallegostrongylus australis n. sp. (Nematoda: Angiostrongylidae) is described from subpleural nodules in the lungs of Rattus fuscipes, R. lutreolus and Mus domesticus in Australia. It is distinguished from G. andersoni occurring in gerbillids in West Africa by the shorter lengths of spicules and gubernaculum, and from G. ibicensis occurring in microtids and murids in Spain by the greater lengths of spicules and gubernaculum and the shorter distances from vulva and from anus to the caudal extremity of females. The parasite has been found only in 16 of 4,227 (prevalence 0.38%) animals representi

A redescription of the Long-tailed Nesokia, Nesokia bunnii, and designation of a neotype (Rodentia: Muridae).

Long-tailed Nesokia, Nesokia bunnii, is a large rat restricted to the Mesopotamian marshes in Basra Province in southern Iraq. The species is known from five museum vouchers collected between March 1974 and January 1977. The type and the paratype, deposited in the Natural History Research Centre and Museum, University of Baghdad, Iraq, were destroyed during War on Iraq in 2003. By studying morphological details on three museum specimens in the Senckenberg Institution, Frankfurt a. M., Germany, we show that N. bunnii is unique among the Bandicoot rats (Nesokia and Bandicota) in having (1) rufou

Notocotylus loeiensis N. sp. (Trematoda: Notocotylidae) from Rattus losea (Rodentia: Muridae) in Thailand.

Notocotylus loeiensis n. sp. (Trematoda: Notocotylidae) is described from the cecum of the lesser rice field rat (Rattus losea), from Loei Province in Thailand with a prevalence of 9.1% (eight of 88 rats infected). The new species differs from previously described Notocotylus species mainly by the extreme prebifurcal position of the genital pore and the number of ventral papillae. This is the first description at the species level of Notocotylus from mammals in Southeast Asia.

Restricted gene flow in Calomys musculinus (Rodentia, Muridae), the natural reservoir of Junin virus.

Random amplified polymorphic DNA polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) markers were used to evaluate the relative contribution of gene flow as a determinant of the population genetic structure of the wild rodent Calomys musculinus (the reservoir of Argentine hemorrhagic fever [AHF]) in central Argentina. One hundred eighty-seven individuals from 13 populations (9 of them from the endemic zone of AHF and 5 from areas outside it) were analyzed using 78 polymorphic RAPD loci. Genetic variation within each population was high; each individual was characterized by a unique RAPD phenotype. C. musculi

Isozyme and allozyme markers distinguishing two morphologically similar, medically important Mastomys species (Rodentia: Muridae).

BACKGROUND: Two common southern African mice species, Mastomys coucha and M. natalensis, are widely distributed throughout the subregion and overlap in many areas. They also share a high degree of morphological similarity, making them impossible to distinguish in the field at present. These multimammate mice are documented carriers of serious disease vectors causing Lassa fever, plague and encephalomyocarditis, which coupled to their cohabitation with humans in many areas, could pose a significant health risk. A preliminary study reported the presence of isozyme markers at three loci (GPI-2, P
