Muscle spindles in the rhesus monkey platysma.

The platysma of the rhesus monkey consists of two parts: a platysma myoides located similar to the human platysma, and a platysma cervicale passing the dorsal cervical region and being in contact with the cheek pouch. Our investigation showed that the muscle fiber morphology was comparable in both parts. Muscle spindles were only present in regions connected to the cheek pouch and contained only nuclear chain fibers. It is tempting to speculate that they sense the filling of the cheek pouch rather than mimic activities.

The human platysma contains numerous muscle spindles.

The mimic muscles are usually described as containing no muscle spindles. In the present publication the human platysma was reinvestigated concerning its content of corpuscular sensors. Serial sections through the platysma of seven donors revealed numerous muscle spindles but no Pacini corpuscules. The muscle spindles were located in the cranial two-thirds of the platysma, and were evenly distributed with a tendency to have more spindles in the lateral part of the muscle. Immunohistochemical staining with S46 antibodies revealed a predominance of nuclear bag fibers. The results point to an ext

On muscle spindles, dystonia and botulinum toxin.

Dystonia may produce co-contractions and constant strain in numerous muscle fibers, including those of the muscle spindles. As proprioceptors, muscle spindles detect dynamic or static changes in muscle length and their afferent projections to the spinal cord play a central role in control of antagonistic muscles. Their parallel arrangement with extrafusal muscle fibers and association with the earlier recruited oxidative motor units allow them to conveniently sample the activity of all motor units and effectively modulate movement. At the same time, fusimotor muscle spindle innervation contrac

Muscle spindles in the velopharyngeal musculature of humans.

Seven muscles in the velopharyngeal region of humans were studied histologically to determine the presence of muscle spindles. Typical spindles were found in palatoglossus and tensor veli palatini with a greater number in the latter. Spindles were not found in levator veli palatini, palatopharyngeus, musculus uvulae, salpingopharyngeus, or the superior pharyngeal constrictor.

Muscle Spindles in the Levator Palpebrae Superioris Muscle of Human Adults.

In this experimental anatomic study, the authors examined the number and distribution of muscle spindles in the levator palpebrae superioris (LPS) muscle of human adults. This study included 11 orbits from 11 cadavers (mean age at death, 81.9 years). The LPS muscles were harvested and equally divided into 5 sections using transverse incisions. Muscle spindles were counted in each section. Consequently, muscle spindles were identified in 4 (36.4%) of the 11 orbits studied. One to 4 muscle spindles were identified in each of these 4 orbits. All muscle spindles were found in the most proximal sec

Muscle spindles provide flexible sensory feedback for movement sequences.

Sensory feedback is essential for motor performance and must adapt to task demands. Muscle spindle afferents (MSAs) are a major primary source of feedback about movement. Their responses are readily modulated online by fusimotor neurons and, in the unique case of jaw MSAs whose cell bodies lie within the central nervous system, by central synaptic inputs. They are, therefore, a powerful site for implementing flexible sensorimotor control. We record from MSAs innervating the jaw musculature of mice performing a directed lick sequence task. Jaw MSAs encode complex jaw-tongue kinematics. However,

Functional adaptability of jaw-muscle spindles after bite-raising.

In a previous experiment, we found that masseter muscle spindles show functional plasticity after 5 to 15 days under increased occlusal vertical dimension (iOVD). In the present study, we hypothesized that spindle function would eventually recover if longer observation periods were allowed. Therefore, in this study we investigated changes in masseter muscle spindle function over periods of 1 day to 8 weeks. Masseter muscle-spindle responses to ramp-and-hold jaw stretches were recorded from the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus in 35 barbiturate-anesthetized female Wistar rats. The rats were pre

Muscle spindles in the human bulbospongiosus and ischiocavernosus muscles.

INTRODUCTION: Muscle spindles are crucial for neuronal regulation of striated muscles, but their presence and involvement in the superficial perineal muscles is not known. METHODS: Bulbospongiosus and ischiocavernosus muscle specimens were obtained from 31 human cadavers. Serial sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, Sirius red, antibodies against Podocalyxin, myosin heavy chain isoforms (MyHC-slow tonic, S46; MyHC-2a/2x, A4.74), and neurofilament for the purpose of muscle spindle screening, counting, and characterization. RESULTS: A low but consistent number of spindles were dete

Synergistic muscle activation impacts muscle spindles projecting to the mouse trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus.

Muscle spindles (MSs) are essential for conveying sensory information about changes in muscle fiber lengths. Epimuscular myofascial force transmission (EMFT) occurs through mechanical connections between muscular and connective tissues and yields strain variability along muscle fibers. As those connective tissues also surround the MSs, EMFT effects imply a direct interaction of motor action and mechanoreceptor response. However, the sensory implications of EMFT remain poorly understood, limiting our understanding of muscle control. We investigated the impact of synergistic muscle activity on M

Muscle spindles of the multifidus muscle undergo structural change after intervertebral disc degeneration.

PURPOSE: Proprioceptive deficits are common in low back pain. The multifidus muscle undergoes substantial structural change after back injury, but whether muscle spindles are affected is unclear. This study investigated whether muscle spindles of the multifidus muscle are changed by intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration in a large animal model. METHODS: IVD degeneration was induced by partial thickness annulus fibrosus lesion to the L3-4 IVD in nine sheep. Multifidus muscle tissue at L4 was harvested at six months after lesion, and from six age-/sex-matched naïve control animals. Muscle spin

Muscle spindle function in healthy and diseased muscle.

Almost every muscle contains muscle spindles. These delicate sensory receptors inform the central nervous system (CNS) about changes in the length of individual muscles and the speed of stretching. With this information, the CNS computes the position and movement of our extremities in space, which is a requirement for motor control, for maintaining posture and for a stable gait. Many neuromuscular diseases affect muscle spindle function contributing, among others, to an unstable gait, frequent falls and ataxic behavior in the affected patients. Nevertheless, muscle spindles are usually ignored

Sensorimotor control in the congenital absence of functional muscle spindles.

Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type III (HSAN III), also known as familial dysautonomia or Riley-Day syndrome, results from an autosomal recessive genetic mutation that causes a selective loss of specific sensory neurones, leading to greatly elevated pain and temperature thresholds, poor proprioception, marked ataxia and disturbances in blood pressure control. Stretch reflexes are absent throughout the body, which can be explained by the absence of functional muscle spindle afferents - assessed by intraneural microelectrodes inserted into peripheral nerves in the upper and lower l

Ultrastructural abnormalities of muscle spindles in the rat masseter muscle with malocclusion-induced damage.

Human temporomandibular disorders due to disturbed occlusal mechanics are characterized by sensory, motor and autonomic symptoms, possibly related to muscle overwork and fatigue. Our previous study in rats with experimentally-induced malocclusion due to unilateral molar cusp amputation showed that the ipsilateral masseter muscles undergo morphological and biochemical changes consistent with muscle hypercontraction and ischemia. In the present study, the masseter muscle spindles of the same malocclusion-bearing rats were examined by electron microscopy. Sham-operated rats were used as controls.

Sympathetic activation and muscle spindle.

An adrenergic central control on fusimotor activity has been demonstrated since 1954. At peripheral level, a muscle spindle autonomic innervation is not clearly demonstrated in man, but several data seem to suggest a direct autonomic innervation of muscle spindle in cats and rabbits. Data obtained in patients with peripheral adrenergic denervation (Idiopathic Orthostatic Hypotension) suggest a prevalent control of central adrenergic pathways on muscle spindle sensitivity.

Degeneration of muscle spindles in a murine model of Pompe disease.

Pompe disease is a debilitating medical condition caused by a functional deficiency of lysosomal acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA). In addition to muscle weakness, people living with Pompe disease experience motor coordination deficits including an instable gait and posture. We reasoned that an impaired muscle spindle function might contribute to these deficiencies and therefore analyzed proprioception as well as muscle spindle structure and function in 4- and 8-month-old Gaa-/- mice. Gait analyses showed a reduced inter-limb and inter-paw coordination in Gaa-/- mice. Electrophysiological analyses

Proprioceptive endings at muscle spindles as a possible target of autoantibodies.

Autoimmune nodopathies are characterized by autoantibodies targeting proteins of the nodes of Ranvier of peripheral nerves. Anti-Contactin-1 (CNTN1) autoantibodies are associated with sensorimotor neuropathy and severe sensory ataxia. While damage to the nodal architecture due to axoglial disjunction is considered the primary pathogenic mechanism of autoimmune nodopathies, the reason for the severe sensory ataxia, accompanied by proprioceptive impairment, remains unclear. We therefore aimed to investigate the expression of CNTN1 in muscle spindles and the binding of IgG from patients with anti

A dual effect of sympathetic nerve stimulation on jaw muscle spindles.

In anaesthetized and paralyzed rabbits, electrical stimulation of the cervical sympathetic nerve at physiological frequencies induces in jaw muscle spindle afferents a short-latency decrease or suppression of discharge. This effect is very stereotyped in pattern and is attributed to direct sympathetic innervation of spindles. It is mediated by preganglionic S1-S2 sympathetic fiber groups. A longer-latency facilitatory effect follows, probably vasomotor in origin and mediated by S3-S4 groups. Both responses are eliminated by administration of alpha-adrenergic blocking agents. The latencies, pat
