Stretching and muscle-performance exercises for chronic nonspecific neck pain: who may benefit most?

BACKGROUND: Although exercise is the mainstay of treatment for neck pain (NP), uncertainty remains over optimal decision-making concerning who may benefit most from such, particularly in the long term. OBJECTIVE: To identify the subgroup of patients with nonspecific NP most likely to benefit from stretching and muscle-performance exercises. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of treatment outcomes of 70 patients (10 of whom dropped out) with a primary complaint of nonspecific NP in one treatment arm of a prospective, randomized, controlled trial. All patients performed the exercises, twic

Muscle damage induced by stretch-shortening cycle exercise.

PURPOSE: Strenuous stretch-shortening cycle exercise was used as a model to study the leakage of proteins from skeletal muscle. METHODS: The analysis included serum levels of creatine kinase (S-CK), myoglobin (S-Mb), and carbonic anhydrase (S-CA III). Blood samples from power- (N=11) and endurance-trained (N=10) athletes were collected before, 0, and 2 h after the exercise, which consisted of a total of 400 jumps. RESULTS: The levels of all determined myocellular proteins increased immediately after the exercise (P < 0.05-0.001) among both subject groups. In the endurance group, the protein

Muscle strain on the radial wrist extensors during motion-simulating stretching exercises for lateral epicondylitis: a cadaveric study.

The purpose of this study is to measure muscle strain on the extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) and extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) in cadavers and to identify effective stretching positions. In 12 frozen/thawed cadaveric arms, a strain gauge was attached to the ECRL and ECRB muscles, and increases in muscle strain were measured from a standard position (45 degrees elbow flexion, neutral forearm, and neutral wrist) to 12 sequential arm and wrist positions. Muscle strain on the ECRL and ECRB with the elbow at 45 degrees flexion was less than 10% regardless of forearm and wrist position

Global posture reeducation compared with segmental muscle stretching exercises in the treatment of fibromyalgia: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Muscle stretching exercises preserve corporal flexibility and decrease the retraction and shortening of myofascial and articular structures. These exercises are recommended for the treatment of fibromyalgia (FM). The purpose of the study was to verify and compare the effect of muscle stretching exercises on FM patients based on the global posture reeducation method against segmental muscle stretching exercises, both used in concert with an educational approach rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy. METHODS: Forty adults with FM were randomly allocated into two groups: global and

Effects of a Single Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Stretching Exercise With and Without Post-stretching Activation on the Muscle Function and Mechanical Properties of the Plantar Flexor Muscles.

A single proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching exercise can increase the range of motion (ROM) of a joint but can lead to a decrease in performance immediately after the stretching exercise. Post-stretching activation (PSA) exercises are known as a possible way to counteract such a drop in performance following a single stretching exercise. However, to date, no study has investigated the combination of PNF stretching with PSA. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the effects of a PNF stretching exercise with and without PSA on the muscle function (e.g., ROM) and mech

Effect of nurse-led intradialytic stretching exercises on muscle cramp burden among patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Intradialytic muscle cramps disrupt hemodialysis (HD), trigger rescue interventions, and reduce patient comfort. Evidence for preventive, nurse-led strategies is limited. This study evaluated whether a standardized intradialytic stretching protocol reduces cramp burden compared to usual care. METHODS: A single-center, parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted. Adults on maintenance HD with a history of leg cramps were randomized 1:1 to nurse-led stretching (n = 30) or usual care (n = 30). The intervention included supervised lower-limb stretches, twice weekly for ~

Medial Gastrocnemius Muscle Architecture Is Altered After Exhaustive Stretch-Shortening Cycle Exercise.

Muscle architecture is an important component of muscle function, and recent studies have shown changes in muscle architecture with fatigue. The stretch-shortening cycle is a natural way to study human locomotion, but little is known about how muscle architecture is affected by this type of exercise. This study investigated potential changes in medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle architecture after exhaustive stretch-shortening cycle exercise. Male athletes (n = 10) performed maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and maximal drop jump (DJ) tests before and after an exercise task consisting of 100

Influence of Aerobic Exercise After Static Stretching on Flexibility and Strength in Plantar Flexor Muscles.

Aerobic exercise could improve stretch-induced strength deficits. However, mechanisms of the improvement were unclear. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of aerobic exercise after static stretching (SS) on flexibility and isometric strength in ankle plantar-flexor muscles. Fifteen healthy males received two interventions after SS of their ankle plantar-flexor muscles for 5 min. One was aerobic exercise for 10-min on a cycling ergometer, and the other was a 10-min rest as a control. Range of motion (ROM) of ankle dorsiflexion, passive torque at terminal ROM, muscle-tendon unit

Stretch imposed on active muscle elicits positive adaptations in strain risk factors and exercise-induced muscle damage.

INTRODUCTION: Stretching highly-contracted plantar flexor muscles (isokinetic eccentric contractions) results in beneficial adaptations in muscle strain risk factors; however its effects in other muscle groups, and on architectural characteristics and exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), are unknown. METHODS: The influence of a 6-week knee extensor training program was studied in 26 volunteers (13 control; 13 experimental). Before and after the training program, passive and maximal isometric and eccentric knee extensor moments and range of motion (ROM) were recorded on an isokinetic dynamom

Effects of stretching exercises on muscle tension, fatigue, strength, and lactic acid accumulation: A pre-experimental study among fish transport workers.

Fish transport workers in Indonesia lift loads more than the specified limits, both in weight and frequency. This could cause lactic acid accumulation, fatigue and reduced physical performance. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of stretching intervention on muscle tension, fatigue, strength, and lactic acid level in fish transport workers in Indonesia. A pre-experimental study design with one group (pre- and post-test) design was conducted among male fish transport workers at the Tawang fish auction, Weleri, Central Java, Indonesia, in June 2022 for two weeks. We created a 1.5-min

The effects of 6-week home-based static stretching, dynamic stretching, or eccentric exercise interventions on muscle-tendon properties and functional performance in older women.

BACKGROUND: Joint inflexibility is acknowledged as a significant contributor to functional limitations in the older adult, with lengthening-type exercises identified as a potential remedial approach. Nevertheless, the responses to eccentric exercise in female older adults have not been extensively studied especially in home-based environment. Here, we aimed to assess the effectiveness of home-based static stretching (ST), dynamic closed-chain stretching (DCS), or eccentric exercise (ECC) interventions on flexibility, musculotendinous architecture, and functional ability in healthy older women.
