The musculocutaneous nerve.

We have analysed the results of repair of traumatic lesions of the musculocutaneous nerve in 85 patients, which were graded by Seddon's modification of the Medical Research Council system into three types of injury: open 'tidy', open 'untidy' and closed 'traction'. They were also correlated with associated arterial injury. There were 57 good, 17 fair and 11 poor results. The type of injury was the most important factor in determining the result; 12 of 13 open-tidy lesions gave good results compared with 30 of 48 closed-traction lesions. The results were better when the nerves were repaired wit

Classifying musculocutaneous nerve variations.

A total of 56 upper limbs from fetuses and adult cadavers were dissected to record anatomical variations in the musculocutaneous nerve (MC). A systematic literature review was performed to identify current classifications of MC variations. Communications were seen between the MC and median nerves in 53.6% of the dissections from which 84.6% were proximal, 7.7% distal, and 7.7% had one proximal and one distal communication to the point of entry of the MC into coracobrachialis muscle. In six out of 54 dissections where the MC was present, the nerve did not pierce the coracobrachialis muscle. In

Musculocutaneous nerve entrapment revisited.

Compression of the lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm (LCNF), the distal sensory termination of the musculocutaneous nerve, can occur below the biceps aponeurosis, most commonly after strenuous elbow extension or forearm pronation. Between 1965 and 1992, 15 patients reported pain in the anterolateral elbow with "burning" into the forearm. There was a minimum 2-year follow-up of all patients in the study (average 13.4 years, median 15 years). All patients were managed conservatively for 12 weeks. Of the 15 patients, 11 required operative decompression that involved resecting a triangular we

US imaging of the musculocutaneous nerve.

PURPOSE: To describe the potential value of high-resolution sonography for evaluation of the musculocutaneous nerve (MCN). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The normal anatomy of the MCN was evaluated on three cadaveric limbs and correlated with the US images obtained in 15 healthy subjects. Seven consecutive patients with MCN neuropathy were then evaluated with sonography using 17.5 and 12.5-MHz broadband linear array transducers. All patients had abnormal nerve conduction studies and underwent correlative MR imaging on a 1.5-T system. RESULTS: One-to-one comparison between cadaveric specimens and son

[Isolated neuropraxy of the musculocutaneous nerve].

Authors describe a case of isolated posttraumatic neuropraxy of the musculocutaneous nerve. With the presentation of this very rare case attention is called, based on literary date, to the fact that the above injury can be mixed with the distal tendon rupture of the biceps.

Results of nerve transfers to the musculocutaneous and axillary nerves.

OBJECTIVE: Nerve transfers in cases of brachial plexus traction injuries with avulsion of spinal nerve roots or irreparable proximal lesions of spinal nerves have been attempted using a variety of donor nerves. The purpose of this study was to analyze the results of nerve transfers to the musculocutaneous and axillary nerves, using collateral branches of the brachial plexus, upper intercostal nerves, or the accessory nerve. METHODS: This study included 62 patients with brachial plexus traction injuries who were surgically treated using various nerve transfer techniques. The follow-up periods

Musculocutaneous nerve injury after heavy exercise.

Three cases of musculocutaneous nerve injury distal to its innervation of the coracobrachialis muscle are reported. The syndrome typically features painless weakness of the biceps brachii and brachialis muscles, sensory loss in the distal volar forearm, a history of recent vigorous upper extremity resistive exercise, and resolution of the problem on resting the affected extremity. In all three reported cases the dominant arm was involved. The condition should not be confused with C-5 or C-6 radiculopathy, brachial plexopathy, or rupture of the biceps brachii muscle belly or tendon.

Absence of the Musculocutaneous Nerve and Associated Compensation by the Median Nerve.

The musculocutaneous and median nerves frequently show variations from their normal course. The purpose of this paper is to report a rare variation, in which the right musculocutaneous nerve was absent. Consequently, the median nerve supplied motor innervation to the flexor compartment of the arm and sensory innervation to the lateral aspect of the forearm. The primary targets of this paper are orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists and radiologists. In cases of injuries to the upper limb, knowledge of these variations can assist them in avoiding misdiagnoses.

A connecting branch between the musculocutaneous nerve and the median nerve.

We report here a connecting branch between the musculocutaneous and the median nerves in a 42 years old male cadaver. The connecting branch was 8 cm in length and 3 mm in width. One of the brachial veins and the brachial artery were located between the roots of the median nerve and the second brachial vein was present between the connecting branch and the median nerve. These kinds of variations may effect the venous return and may cause edema in the upper extremities. Additionally, variations of these nerves have an importance during operations of this region.

Musculocutaneous nerve: histotopographic study and clinical implications.

Surgical reconstruction of severe brachial plexus injuries includes nerve grafting and neurotization techniques of the musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) to recover elbow flexion. In treating recurrent anterior shoulder instability, knowledge of the topography of the MCN is important for the margin of safety available during dissection. The present study evaluates the origin and course of the MCN and its branches, and their relationships to bone landmarks. Twelve unembalmed cadavers (50-82 years old) were dissected. A histological study of the MCN and the coracobrachialis muscle (CB) was also carrie

Isolated Musculocutaneous Nerve Injury: A Case Report.

A case report of an isolated musculocutaneous nerve injury distal to the branch to the coracobrachialis muscle of the non-dominant arm is described. The injury occurred in the context of an industrial setting, specifically, an assembly plant. The non-dominant limb was injured; in contrast, most reports indicate the dominant limb was affected during strenuous activity. Nerve function was monitored with serial electromyography. Management of the injury was conservative, with eventual full functional recovery.

Isolated proximal musculocutaneous nerve palsy: case report.

Isolated musculocutaneous nerve injury is extremely rare. The few reported cases were associated with heavy exercises and violent extension of the forearm. The lesions in those cases were below the coracobrachialis muscle, involving the biceps, brachialis, and cutaneous nerves of the forearm. This patient's lesion was unique, located proximal to the coracobrachialis. There was no antecedent trauma. At follow-up six weeks and four months after onset of symptoms, significant improvement was noted both clinically and electrophysiologically. Musculocutaneous nerve palsy is important to distinguish

Unusual variation in musculocutaneous nerves in Nepalese.

BACKGROUND: Variations in origin, course, branching pattern, termination and connections of the musculocutaneous nerve in the arm are not as uncommon as was once thought. Variational study of nerve in Nepalese is very less and can be of surgical-clinical importance. This opinion led us to performing this study. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to a study in Nepalese which could be important for clinical investigation and the surgical treatment of peripheral nerve injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was carried out in Manipal College of medical sciences (MCOMS). Dissection of forma

Ultrasound-guided anterior axilla musculocutaneous nerve block.

PURPOSE: This paper presents a technique of ultrasound-guided localisation and block of the musculocutaneous nerve through the anterior wall of the axilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients (7 males and 13 females; mean age, 35 years) had axillary nerve block for upper extremity trauma. With the arm adducted, the ultrasound probe was positioned on the anterior axillary wall; the axillary artery, coracobrachialis and pectoralis major muscles and lateral cord of brachial plexus were visualised in cross section. With continuous imaging of the axillary artery in cross section, the ultrasound

Bilateral musculocutaneous nerve palsy. A case report.

A case of bilateral, isolated, proximal musculocutaneous nerve palsy is reported. Initial physical and electromyographic examinations demonstrated complete denervation of the biceps brachii, brachialis, and coracobrachialis muscles bilaterally. Nerve conduction studies of the musculocutaneous nerves initially revealed no evoked potentials. The patient underwent resection with end-to-end anastomosis on the left and neurolysis without resection on the right. Significant functional recovery was noted bilaterally but was more rapid and complete on the side that underwent neurolysis without resecti

Ultrasound-Guided Musculocutaneous Nerve Block in Postherpetic Neuralgia.

Postherpetic neuralgia is a common and challenging complication of herpes zoster infection, particularly in older people. In recent decades, first-line treatments, including oral or topical medication, have become well established. However, few studies have reported the efficacy of interventional procedures for the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia. Here, the authors present a case of intractable postherpetic neuralgia treated with musculocutaneous peripheral nerve block under ultrasound guidance. Symptoms remained controlled at 1 mo follow-up. Ultrasound can be readily applied to improve th
