Mushroom poisoning.

The majority of cases of mushroom poisoning occur in children and involve benign gastrointestinal irritants. Critical poisonings most frequently occur in adults who ingest Amanita phalloides or other mushrooms containing amanitin. Critical versus noncritical poisonings can be diagnosed with a high degree of confidence by the patient's history and initial symptoms. The most promising new medical treatment for Amanita mushroom poisoning is silibinin. In suspected cases of mushroom poisoning, it is important to obtain specimens of the ingested mushrooms, if possible, since treatment is specific t

[Poisoning by foodstuffs, plants and mushrooms].

Food poisoning is defined as poisoning caused by any foodstuff or alimentary product that causes poisoning because it contains toxic substances, germs, metals, additives, hormones, etc. It forms an important part of Clinical Toxicology, although in the majority of statistics, alimentary toxic infections provoked by bacteria, protozoa and viruses are not classified as poisonings, since they are caused by germs, and are classified as infections. Reference is made within this subject to all types of pathologies due to food, with special emphasis given to botulism. The clinical picture of botulism

Acute Liver Injury From Mushroom Ingestion: A Timely Intervention in Mushroom Poisoning.

Mushroom poisoning, known as mycetism, represents a pressing health concern worldwide. Although the majority of mushroom ingestions are benign, select species like "Amanita phalloides" can induce catastrophic liver damage, culminating in acute liver failure. In this report, we detail a case involving a 35-year-old female who presented to the emergency department exhibiting symptoms of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and palpitations merely six hours post-ingestion of "Amanita phalloides." Accurate identification of the specific mushroom species consumed proves challenging in over 90% of pois

Severe mushroom poisoning in one Macedonian family.

BACKGROUND: Collecting and consuming wild mushrooms is a historical tradition in many European countries, including The Republic of Macedonia. This activity is predominantly performed in the period between June and October, when the weather is warm and humidity in the air and soil is at higher levels. The Amanita genus consists of 500 different species of mushrooms; among these, Amanita phaloides, Amanita virosa and Amanita verna are most commonly found in oak forests in our country. These species are highly poisonous and because they can be similar to some edible mushrooms, they have often bee

[Mushroom poisoning in an autoimmune hepatitis patient].

Mushroom poisoning is responsible for initiation of severe life threatening syndromes, especially hepatic cytolysis. We are describing a case in which the helvelian syndrome induced by mushroom meal was masking the preexistent autoimmune hepatitis type 1. The course of disease under corticoids was satisfactory after one month of surveillance.

Mushroom poisoning: an indication for liver transplantation.

There are numerous causes of fulminant hepatic failure including acetaminophen, viral etiologies, acute fatty liver of pregnancy, ischemic hepatitis, and acute Budd-Chiari syndrome. One of the rare causes of fulminant hepatic failure is toxic mushroom poisoning. This article describes one case in which ingestion of a toxic mushroom, Amanita phalloides, caused a patient severe liver damage ultimately requiring organ transplantation. Early identification of live dysfunction and referral to a liver transplant center for evaluation may be critical to save such a patient's life.

Fulminant hepatic failure after Lepiota mushroom poisoning.

We present ten patients who suffered from a cyclopeptide syndrome from two different foci, one caused by Lepiota helveola (seven cases) and the other by Lepiota brunneoincarnata (three cases). Of the ten victims, five recovered completely after the intestinal stage and the other five developed a phase of visceral involvement with alterations of liver function. In two patients, hepatic function became normal after the 7th day after ingestion. Three patients developed fulminant hepatitis and two of these died of adult respiratory distress syndrome. The fulminant hepatitis patient who later impro

[Diagnosis and therapy of mushroom poisoning (II)].

In the second part of this review of mushroom poisonings, the syndromes with intermediate and long lag-times are discussed. They include the coprinus-, phalloides-, gyromitrin- and the orellanus syndrome. The coprinus syndrome occurs whenever alcohol is consumed after a meal containing coprine. The lag-time varies according to the amount and time of alcohol intake. It is very similar to the disulfiram syndrome which is known from the adverse therapy of alcoholism. The lag-time of the phalloides syndrome varies between 7 and 24 hours. It starts with massive gastroenteritis followed by hepatopat

Local mushroom poisoning: a case report study.

INTRODUCTION: Poisoning by poisonous local mushrooms that resemble edible mushrooms is a serious health hazard with severe consequences. Wild and unidentified mushrooms are the main cause of these poisonings. Successful treatment requires prompt medical intervention, and if delayed, a liver transplant may be necessary. CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old woman with postpartum cardiomyopathy was admitted to Razi Hospital with abdominal pain, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. She was diagnosed with poisoning from local mountain mushrooms and transferred to the ICU due to low blood pressure, elevated enzy

Mushroom poisoning: A proposed new clinical classification.

Mushroom poisoning is a significant and increasing form of toxin-induced-disease. Existing classifications of mushroom poisoning do not include more recently described new syndromes of mushroom poisoning and this can impede the diagnostic process. We reviewed the literature on mushroom poisoning, concentrating on the period since the current major classification published in 1994, to identify all new syndromes of poisoning and organise them into a new integrated classification, supported by a new diagnostic algorithm. New syndromes were eligible for inclusion if there was sufficient detail abo

[Orellanus syndrome: mushroom poisoning with kidney insufficiency].

The Orellanus syndrome is a rare nephrotoxic disease caused by several fungi of the genus Cortinarius. For a long time the sole report of this syndrome was a mass intoxication in Poland. About 32 cases of Orellanus syndrome caused by Cortinarius orellanus, speciocissimus and splendens have been described in recent years. A few other species are also suspected of being nephrotoxic. The syndrome is characterized by a delayed latency period of 2 days to 3 weeks, and a chronic evolution involving fatigue, anorexia, headache, thirst, pains in the lumbar region and renal insufficiency with oliguria

[Mushroom poisonings: syndromic diagnosis and treatment].

The major syndromes of mushroom poisoning can be divided by presentation timing: Early syndromes (symptom onset <6 hrs after ingestion) have little probability to cause organ damage. Epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea occur in most cases and treatment includes initial gastrointestinal decontamination with oral activated charcoal and fluid rehydration. In addition, an acute gastrointestinal syndrome can be combined with cholinergic toxicity, epileptiformic response or immuno-hemolytic anemia. Neurotoxic Syndromes may present as dysphoria, delirium, hallucinations or disulfiram-like

The examination of mushroom poisonings at Akita University.

In the past 10 years from 1991 to 2000, the number of consultations to the Japan Poison Information Center were 947 concerning mushroom poisonings. However, those from the hospital cases were not analyzed toxicologically. We examined toxicologically 20 cases (35 patients) of mushroom poisonings from 1993 to 2001. Investigation of amanita toxin poisoning was requested in 19 cases. We could detect the amanita toxin, amanitin, and phalloidin, in two cases, which resulted in concluding the cause of death. A fatal case by the magic mushroom poisoning was analyzed in the blood, urine, and mushroom,

Chlorophyllum molybdites--severe mushroom poisoning in a child.

The case of a 6-year-old female who developed hypovolemic shock from mushroom poisoning is discussed. The mushroom ingested, Chlorophyllum molybdites, is considered to be a benign gastrointestinal irritant. This case emphasizes that the gastrointestinal irritant mushrooms can produce severe toxicity and that pediatric patients have a limited capacity for fluid loss before becoming hypovolemic.

Mortality Cases of Mushroom Poisoning with Russula subnigricans.

Mushroom poisoning is increasing worldwide, as well as the incidence of fatal mushroom poisoning. Several new syndromes associated with mushroom poisoning have been described in the literature. Notably, 1 of the newly identified mushroom poisonings is Russula subnigricans poisoning. R subnigricans can be classified as causing a delayed-onset rhabdomyolytic syndrome as patients with this severe poisoning present with severe rhabdomyolysis, acute kidney injury, and cardiomyopathy. However, there are only a few reports on the toxicity of R subnigricans. We recently treated 6 patients with R subni

[Poisoning with selected mushrooms with neurotropic and hallucinogenic effect].

Picking mushrooms, especially in summer and autumn, is still very popular in Poland. Despite raising awareness of poisonous mushrooms in the Polish society, year after year hospitals treat many patients diagnosed with poisoning with the most common toxic species of mushroom found in our country. Furthermore, growing interest in hallucinogenic mushrooms among young people has become a serious medical problem of our time. Websites make it incredibly easy for people to obtain information on the morphology and appearance of mushrooms with psychoactive properties, which leads inexperienced pickers
