[Musical hallucinations: perpetual music].

INTRODUCTION: Musical hallucinations are a kind of auditory hallucination that are prevalent among the non-psychiatric population, but which have rarely been reported in the neurological literature. They occur most frequently in the elderly, in females and when there is a loss of hearing, but their pathophysiology has still to be unravelled. CASE REPORTS: We report here six cases (five females and one male) of musical hallucinations diagnosed in a general neurology clinic over a time-span of five years. In five cases there was also concurrent hypoacusis, to a greater or lesser extent, and one

Influence of musical expertise and musical training on pitch processing in music and language.

PURPOSE: We review a series of experiments aimed at studying pitch processing in music and speech. These studies were conducted with musician and non musician adults and children. We found that musical expertise improved pitch processing not only in music but also in speech. Demonstrating transfer of training between music and language has interesting applications for second language learning. We also addressed the issue of whether the positive effects of musical expertise are linked with specific predispositions for music or with extensive musical practice. Results of longitudinal studies arg

Clinical music interventions and music therapy in dermatology.

Music interventions in medicine have been shown to reduce anxiety and depression, decrease pain, and improve quality of life; however, a review of clinical music interventions in dermatology is lacking. Studies have shown that playing music for patients undergoing dermatologic procedures (Mohs surgery and anesthetic injections) can decrease pain and anxiety. Patients with pruritic conditions-such as psoriasis, neurodermatitis, atopic dermatitis, contact eczema, and situations requiring hemodialysis-have exhibited decreased levels of disease burden and pain when listening to preferred music, pr

Music Form but Not Music Experience Modulates Motor Cortical Activity in Response to Novel Music.

External cues, such as music, improve movement performance in persons with Parkinson's disease. However, research examining the motor cortical mechanisms by which this occurs is lacking. Research using electroencephalography in healthy young adults has revealed that moving to music can modulate motor cortical activity. Moreover, motor cortical activity is further influenced by music experience. It remains unknown whether these effects extend to corticomotor excitability. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to determine the effects of novel music on corticomotor excitability using tran

Music Therapy and Music-Based Interventions for Movement Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There is emerging evidence that music therapy and other methods using music and rhythm may meaningfully improve a broad range of symptoms in neurological and non-neurological disorders. This review highlights the findings of recent studies utilizing music and rhythm-based interventions for gait impairment, other motor symptoms, and non-motor symptoms in Parkinson disease (PD) and other movement disorders. Limitations of current studies as well as future research directions are discussed. RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple studies have demonstrated short-term benefits of rhythmic aud

[Music and brain: neuroscientific foundations and musical disorders].

Music is present in every culture and, from the earliest ages, we all have the basic capacities needed to process it, although this processing takes place in different modules that involve different regions of the brain. Do these regions form paths that are specific to musical processing? As we shall see, the production and perception of music engage a large part of our cognitive capabilities, involving areas of the auditory cortex and the motor cortex. On the other hand, music produces emotional responses within us that involve other cortical and subcortical areas. Are they the same paths as

Dyslexia and music: measuring musical timing skills.

Over the last few decades, a growing amount of research has suggested that dyslexics have particular difficulties with skills involving accurate or rapid timing, including musical timing skills. It has been hypothesised that music training may be able to remediate such timing difficulties, and have a positive effect on fundamental perceptual skills that are important in the development of language and literacy skills (Overy, 2000). In order to explore this hypothesis further, the nature and extent of dyslexics' musical difficulties need to be examined in more detail. In the present study, a co

Abnormal musical pacemaker in a patient with musical hallucinations.

Music creation requires a highly orchestrated temporal pattern. The study of a patient with repetitive musical hallucinations enabled us to examine temporal pacemakers in music production. Here, we show that the pattern of faster silent production of a chosen tune compared with its production aloud was reversed when the patient produced the hallucinatory tune. This observation might suggest the utilization of a pacemaker(s), which functions differentially during the disease.

Music Therapy and Music-Based Interventions in Pediatric Neurorehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Music therapy and music-based interventions are increasingly recognized as valuable adjuncts in pediatric neurorehabilitation, leveraging rhythm, singing, instrument playing, and improvisation to support children with neurological disabilities. OBJECTIVE/METHOD: This narrative review synthesizes evidence from studies published between 2000 and 2025, focusing on children aged 3 to 18 years receiving neurorehabilitation. RESULTS: The literature demonstrates that music therapy and music-based interventions can improve motor function-particularly gait and upper limb coordination-as w

Hyperventilation complaints in music performance anxiety among classical music students.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the importance of respiration and hyperventilation in anxiety disorders, research on breathing disturbances associated with hyperventilation is rare in the field of music performance anxiety (MPA, also known as stage fright). The only comparable study in this area reported a positive correlation between negative feelings of MPA and hyperventilation complaints during performance. The goals of this study were (a) to extend these previous findings to the period before performance, (b) to test whether a positive correlation also exists between hyperventilation complaints and the

The impact of musical expertise on disentangled and contextual neural encoding of music revealed by generative music models.

Music perception requires integrating individual notes into their broader musical context, yet how musical expertise shapes the neural encoding of this information across the auditory hierarchy remains unclear. Here, we address this by using the hierarchical representations from a generative music transformer model to predict human brain activity. We recorded scalp electroencephalography (EEG) from expert musicians and non-musicians, as well as intracranial EEG (iEEG) from six neurological patients, during listening to classical piano pieces. We found that deeper layers of the transformer, whi

[Music and emotionality: effects of music on mood and verbal memory].

Emotional stimuli are better remembered than neutral stimuli. Music, as an emotional stimulus, modulates memory; it can change the mood and improves memory of material congruent with it (congruence hypothesis). The aim of this work is to study the effect of activating and relaxing music on emotional verbal memory in young adults, and to analyze the effect of mood congruence on the type of material remembered. 33 adults listened to a list of positive, negative and neutral words. Activating and relaxing positive music, or white noise, was used as a post-learning treatment. Mood was measured. We

Dyslexia and music. From timing deficits to musical intervention.

The underlying causes of the language and literacy difficulties experienced by dyslexic children are not yet fully understood, but current theories suggest that timing deficits may be a key factor. Dyslexic children have been found to exhibit timing difficulties in the domains of language, music, perception and cognition, as well as motor control. The author has previously suggested that group music lessons, based on singing and rhythm games, might provide a valuable multisensory support tool for dyslexic children by encouraging the development of important auditory and motor timing skills and

Effects of music and music therapy on mood in neurological patients.

Mood disorder and depressive syndromes represent a common comorbid condition in neurological disorders with a prevalence rate that ranges between 20% and 50% of patients with stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease. Notwithstanding, these conditions are often under-diagnosed and under-treated in the clinical practice and negatively affect the functional recovery, the adherence to treatment, the quality of life, and even the mortality risk. In addition, a bidirectional association between depression and neurological disorders may be possible being that depressive syndromes

Music and dementia.

There is an increasing incidence of dementia in our aging population, and consequently an urgent need to develop treatments and activities that may alleviate the symptoms of dementia. Accumulating evidence shows that persons with dementia enjoy music, and their ability to respond to music is potentially preserved even in the late or severe stages of dementia when verbal communication may have ceased. Media interest in this topic has contributed to the public perception that music abilities are an "island of preservation" in an otherwise cognitively impaired person with dementia. In this chapte

Music and melancholia.

This is a brief look at the psychiatric ailments of some of the great composers: two of whom committed suicide; four suffered from severe depression; three had other assorted ailments; and three were suffering from manic depressive illnesses. Their mood swings are compared with their periods of intense composition. For some composers it seems that they are most productive immediately after a phase of depression.

Music Perception and Music-Related Quality of Life in Adult Cochlear Implant Users: Exploring the Need for Music Rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implant (CI) users face difficulties in accurately perceiving basic musical elements such as pitch, melody, and timbre. Music significantly affects the quality of life (QoL) of CI users. Individually and culturally influenced music perception exceeds psychophysical measures in capturing the subjective music enjoyment of CI users. Understanding the music perception, enjoyment, and habits of CI users is crucial for approaches to improve music-related QoL (MuRQoL). Therefore, this study aims to investigate music perception skills, experiences, and participation in music activ
