Effect of fungicides on plant growth promoting activities of phosphate solubilizing Pseudomonasputida isolated from mustard (Brassica compestris) rhizosphere.

This study was navigated to examine the effects of fungicide-stress on the activities of plant-growth-promoting rhizobacterium Pseudomonasputida with inherent phosphate solubilizing activity. The fungicide-tolerant and phosphate solubilizing P.putida strain PS9 was isolated from the mustard rhizosphere and tentatively identified following standard morphological, physiological and biochemical tests. To further consolidate the identity of the strain PS9, the 16S rDNA sequence analysis was performed. Following the BLAST program, the strain PS9 was identified as P.putida. In the presence of the va

Synthesis of the allelochemical alliarinoside present in garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata), an invasive plant species in North America.

The allelochemical alliarinoside present in garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata), an invasive plant species in North America, was chemically synthesized using an efficient and practical synthetic strategy based on a simple reaction sequence. Commercially available 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-acetyl-β-D-glucopyranose was converted into prop-2-enyl 2',3',4',6'-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-glucopyranoside and subjected to epoxidation. In a one-pot reaction, ring-opening of the epoxide using TMSCN under solvent free conditions followed by treatment of the formed trimethylsilyloxy nitrile with pyridine and phosphoryl c

Recent advances on fermentation of mustard plant (Brassica juncea L.): microbial community, fermentation processing and sensorial quality: a review.

Mustard (Brassica juncea L.), rich in vitamins, minerals, and glucosinolates, yields fermented products valued for their distinct flavor and health benefits, particularly across East and Southeast Asia. The fermentation process is primarily driven by a complex microbial community dominated by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) such as Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus pentosus, and Lactobacillus plantarum. These microbes metabolize substrates to generate organic acids, volatile compounds, and free amino acids, which collectively shape the product's flavor and sensory quality. This review systemat

Antiasthmatic effects of onion extracts--detection of benzyl- and other isothiocyanates (mustard oils) as antiasthmatic compounds of plant origin.

Previous studies showed the inhibitory effects of crude ethanolic onion extracts (COE) on allergic skin reactions in man as well as on allergen-induced bronchial asthma in man and guinea-pigs. Work is in progress in order to identify both the mode of action of COE and the active substance(s). The present study describes asthma-protective effects of isothiocyanates. Groups of at least 5 guinea-pigs sensitized to ovalbumin were challenged twice (time 0 and 10 min) by the inhalation of ovalbumin 30 min after oral treatment with increasing doses of the agent tested or control solutions. Bronchial

Hydrogen sulphide and salicylic acid regulate antioxidant pathway and nutrient balance in mustard plants under cadmium stress.

Cadmium (Cd), a pervasive noxious heavy metal, is a key threat to agricultural system. It is rapidly translocated and has detrimental effects on plant growth and development. Hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) is emerging as a potential messenger molecule for modulating plant tolerance to Cd. Salicylic acid (SA), a phenolic signalling molecule, can alleviate Cd toxicity in plants. The present study investigated the mediatory role of H2 S (100 µM) and SA (0.5 mM), individually and in combination, in modulating antioxidant defence machinery and nutrient balance to impart Cd (50 µM) resistance to mustard.

Transgenic Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) plants expressing an Arabidopsis phytochelatin synthase (AtPCS1) exhibit enhanced As and Cd tolerance.

Phytochelatins (PCs) are post-translationally synthesized thiol reactive peptides that play important roles in detoxification of heavy metal and metalloids in plants and other living organisms. The overall goal of this study is to develop transgenic plants with increased tolerance for and accumulation of heavy metals and metalloids from soil by expressing an Arabidopsis thaliana AtPCS1 gene, encoding phytochelatin synthase (PCS), in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.). A FLAG-tagged AtPCS1 gDNA, under its native promoter, is expressed in Indian mustard, and transgenic pcs lines have been compa

Comparative transcriptomics revealed differential regulation of defense related genes in Brassica juncea leading to successful and unsuccessful infestation by aphid species.

Productivity of Indian mustard (B. juncea), a major oil yielding crop in rapeseed-mustard group is heavily inflicted by mustard aphid, L. erysimi. Mustard aphid, a specialist aphid species on rapeseed-mustard crops, rapidly multiplies and colonizes the plants leading to successful infestation. In contrary, legume specific cowpea aphid, A. craccivora when released on B. juncea plants fails to build up population and thus remains unsuccessful in infestation. In the present study, differential host response of B. juncea to the two aphid species, one being successful insect-pest and the other bein

Cyanide in the chemical arsenal of garlic mustard, Alliaria petiolata.

Cyanide production has been reported from over 2500 plant species, including some members of the Brassicaceae. We report that the important invasive plant, Alliaria petiolata, produces levels of cyanide in its tissues that can reach 100 ppm fresh weight (FW), a level considered toxic to many vertebrates. In a comparative study, levels of cyanide in leaves of young first-year plants were 25 times higher than in leaves of young Arabidopsis thaliana plants and over 150 times higher than in leaves of young Brassica kaber, B. rapa, and B. napus. In first-year plants, cyanide levels were highest in

Variation in plant volatiles and attraction of the parasitoid Diadegma semiclausum (Hellén).

Differences in allelochemistry of plants may influence their ability to attract parasitoids. We studied responses of Diadegma semiclausum (Hellén), a parasitoid of the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.), to inter- and intraspecific variation in odor blends of crucifers and a non-crucifer species. Uninfested Brussels sprout (Brassica oleracea L. gemmifera), white mustard (Sinapis alba L.), a feral Brassica oleracea, and malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were compared for their attractivity to D. semiclausum in a Y-tube bioassay. Dwarfs standing tall: breeding towards the 'Yellow revolution' through insights into plant height regulation.

High oilseed production is an exigency due to the increasing edible oil consumption of the growing population. Rapeseed and mustard are cultivated worldwide and contribute significantly to the world's total oilseed production. Already a plateau is reached in terms of area and yield in most of the existing cultivars. Most of the commercially cultivated high yielding rapeseed and mustard varieties are tall, mainly due to a wider use of heterosis. However, they are susceptible to lodging and consequent yield losses. Plant yield is strongly dependent upon its architecture; therefore, 'ideotype bre

Sulforaphane and related mustard oils in focus of cancer prevention and therapy.

The plant family Brassicaceae, formerly Cruciferae, contains mustard oil glycosides, from which mustard oils are enzymatically hydrolyzed. Mustard oils offer protection from pests, microorganisms and fungi. More than 120 different mustard oils with various biological functions are known. Since ancient times, these substances are used as natural antibiotics, antiviral drugs and antimycotics. The antioxidative effect of mustard oils contributes to protection from DNA damage. Epidemiological and experimental studies have shown preventive and therapeutic effects of crucifers or isolated substances

Comprehensive transcriptomic analysis of BjGL1-knockout Brassica juncea: novel insights into leaf trichome formation.

Brassica juncea is a common cruciferous crop, which can be used not only for oil extraction but also as condiments and medicinal materials. It is regarded by both traditional medicine and modern nutrition science as a food with combined dietary and health promoting value. Leaf trichomes are hair-like structures differentiated from epidermal cells and constitute an important barrier against biotic and abiotic stresses, playing a crucial role in enhancing plant resistance and thus possessing significant scientific relevance. In this study, the phenotype and gene editing site of BjA06.GL1 and BjB

[Examining fermented mustard brine in terms of traditional Chinese medicine].

Fermented mustard brine was a unique liquid fermented with mustard long used in traditional Chinese medicine. It was previously known as Ji Shui, which refered to the yellow salty water after vegetables were fermented. Fermented mustard brine was not established in TCM until the Ming Dynasty. It was found that the original plant of ancient mustard was Brassica juncea (L.) Czern et Coss. var. juncea, and the origin of the mustard used in mustard brine mainly refereed to the cultivated species of Brassica (Brassica juncea var. multiceps Tsen et Lee) in the Brassica branch of the Cruciferae famil

Elicitation of jasmonate-mediated host defense in Brassica juncea (L.) attenuates population growth of mustard aphid Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.).

The productivity of Brassica oilseeds is severely affected by its major pest: aphids. Unavailability of resistance source within the crossable germplasms has stalled the breeding efforts to derive aphid resistant cultivars. In this study, jasmonate-mediated host defense in Indian mustard Brassica juncea (L.) Czern. was evaluated and compared with regard to its elicitation in response to mustard aphid Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.) and the defense elicitor methyl jasmonate (MeJ). Identification of jasmonate-induced unigenes in B. juncea revealed that most are orthologous to aphid-responsive genes, id

Stability of Tl(III) in the context of speciation analysis of thallium in plants.

The paper presents both "good" and "bad" results obtained during speciation analysis of thallium in plant tissues of a hyperaccumulator of this metal. The object was white mustard - Sinapis alba L. In this plant there were found traces of trivalent thallium. The crucial point of this study (especially in the case of so unstable thallium form as Tl(III)) was to prove that the presence of Tl(III) was not caused by the procedure of sample preparation itself, and that the whole analytical method provides reliable results. Choice of the method for conservation of the initial speciation, extraction
