[Cytogenetics of albinism in polecats of the genus Putorius (Carnivora, Mustelidae)].

Karyotypes of two ferret species, Putorius eversmanni (2n = 38) and P. putorius (2n = 40), differ in a single Robertsonian rearrangement, resulting in decreased chromosome number in P. eversmanni. Interspecific hybrids from crosses between P. eversmanni and domesticated albino ferret P. putorius furo are fertile. Hybrid individuals have a chromosome set 2 = 39. Analysis of offspring from crosses of these hybrids showed that albinism is a recessive character. Offspring obtained from crosses between interspecific hybrid ferrets and between these hybrids and parental species was subjected to chro

Powassan virus in Ixodes cookei and Mustelidae in New England.

Powassan virus was recovered from a pool of 3 nymphal and 1 adult female Ixodes cookei removed from a striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) trapped in Massachusetts during 1967 and from a pool of 9 nymphal I. cookei from a long-tailed weasel (Mustela frenata) captured in Connecticut during 1978. Virus was detected in the blood of both mammals. Hemagglutination-inhibiting (HI) antibody to Powassan virus was demonstrated in 16.0% of the skunks sampled in Connecticut, and neutralizing antibody was detected in 83.3% of the skunks tested from Massachusetts. HI antibody was found in 1 of 6 long-tailed w

Ultrastructure of the parotid and submandibular glands of the Old World Marten (Carnivora; Mustelidae).

The morphology of the parotid and submandibular glands in the marten, a carnivore, were studied and analyzed under a transmission electron microscope. The nature of the granules in both glands, as well as in the acini and in the secretory tubules, is rather mucous. The structure of the secretory tubules is very characteristic, especially the striated ones. The myoepithelial cells are close to the acini and tubules and covered by the basement membrane separating them from the connective tissue, which enhances its epithelial origin. The cytoplasm of the basal parts of the acinar and tubular cell

First report of Angiostrongylus vasorum parasitizing lesser grison (Galictis cuja) (Mustelidae) in Brazil.

Angiostrongylus vasorum is a metastrongylid nematode that parasitizes the pulmonary arteries and right heart of canids, being the etiological agent of canine angiostrongylosis, a disease of growing veterinary concern due to its expanding geographic distribution and the involvement of domestic and wild hosts. In Brazil, the parasite has been reported mainly in domestic dogs and some wild canids, and its occurrence in mustelids has been documented only once previously. This study reports the first occurrence of A. vasorum infecting a lesser grison (Galictis cuja) in Brazil. The mustelid was foun

Mellivora indosinica sp. nov. (Mustelidae, Carnivora): a Honey Badger from the Pleistocene of Vietnam.

A new honey badger, Mellivora indosinica sp. nov., is described on the basis of an isolated lower carnassial tooth from the Middle Pleistocene deposits of the Tham Hai cave in Northeast Vietnam (Lang Son Province). Judging by tooth measurements, the new species is larger than all known Mellivorini, including the medium-sized Recent Mellivora capensis, but much smaller than the Neogene giant Eomellivorini. This is the only representative of Mellivorinae in Southeast Asia and evidence for the presence of honey badgers in the Pleistocene Stegodon-Ailuropoda fauna.

[Formation sources and topographic characteristics of the pelvic plexus in furry animals of Canidae and Mustelidae families].

Using preparation methods, the topography and the formation sources of pelvic plexus (PP) were studied in animals of Canidae (silver-black fox, blue fox) and Mustelidae (sable, American mink) families. Maximal differences in PP topography and PP-forming nerves were found between species (Canidae-Mustelidae), whereas the intraspecies differences were less pronounced. Intraspecies sex-associated differences in PP topography are associated with only quantitative parameters, while those in PP formation sources and in peculiarities of PP-forming nerves' branching pattern are qualitative in nature.

Greater Hog Badger Arctonyx collaris (Mustelidae, Carnivora) from the Pleistocene of Vietnam (Lang Trang Cave).

The dental remains of a large badger collected in 2020 from the Pleistocene deposits of the Lang Trang karstic cave in northern Vietnam are described. The molars М1 and М1 exhibit the features that are characteristic of Arctonyx collaris Cuvier, 1825. At the same time, the length of M1 of the Lang Trang form exceeds that of modern greater hog badgers. Based on the size and structure of the teeth, it can be assigned to the subspecies A. c. rostratus Matthew et Granger, 1923 known from the Pleistocene of China and Southeast Asia.

The potential of VKORC1 polymorphisms in Mustelidae for evolving anticoagulant resistance through selection along the food chain.

In response to strong selection, new mutations can arise quickly and sweep through populations, particularly, if survival and reproduction depend on certain allele copies for adaptation to rapidly changing environments, like resistance against deadly diseases or strong toxins. Since the 1950s, resistance to anticoagulant rodenticides in several rodents has emerged through single nucleotide mutations in the vitamin-K-epoxid-reductase-complex-subunit-1 (VKORC1) gene, often located in its exon 3. Detection of high prevalence and concentrations of anticoagulant rodenticides in non-target vertebrat

Sex- and age-related morphological and functional differences in the skull of Eira barbara (Linnaeus, 1758) (Carnivora, Mustelidae).

BACKGROUND: Morphological differences related to age and sex have been extensively documented in Nearctic and Palearctic mustelids, largely due to the interest in the commercial management of species such as martens and fishers. However, sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic development in Neotropical species, such as the tayra (Eira barbara), remain poorly studied. METHODS: We investigated the skull development and sexual differences in E. barbara through qualitative and morphometric analyses of 376 skull specimens from museum collections. Specimens were classified into four age classes based on

The Distribution of Sarcocsytis Species Described by Ungulates-Canids Life Cycle in Intestines of Small Predators of the Family Mustelidae.

PURPOSE: Using molecular techniques, we have previously shown that carnivorous mammals of the family Mustelidae might be common definitive hosts for various protozoan Sarcocystis species. In the present study we aimed to unravel whether Sarcocystis species using ungulates as intermediate hosts and canids or felids as definitive hosts can be found in intestine of mustelids. METHODS: Small intestine samples of 93 individual mustelids of five different species from Lithuania were examined. Sarcocystis species were identified based on species-specific PCR and subsequent cox1 sequencing. RESULTS:

First Finding of a Representative of Giant Mustelids of the Genus Eomellivora (Carnivora, Mustelidae) in Russia (Tuva, Upper Miocene).

In the late Miocene deposits in the Taralik-Cher locality (Tuva Republic), fossil remains of a giant mustelid of the genus Eomellivora Zdansky, 1924 have been found. This finding is the first reliable evidence of the Eomellivora inhabiting the modern Russia. Teeth of the Eomelliovra from Taralik-Cher are similar in size to those of E. wimani and E. piveteaui from the late Miocene in Eurasia. The morphology of teeth of the material from Tuva is most similar to that of E. ursogulo; therefore, it is considered a small form of Eomellivora ursogulo. The described finding expands the understanding o

New data on the prevalence of Trichodectes melis (Phthiraptera, Trichodectidae) on the European badger Meles meles (Carnivora, Mustelidae).

Trichodectes melis is a specific ectoparasite of the European badger Meles meles. Distribution of this chewing louse is little known, although presumably it coincides with the range of its typical host. In Poland, it has been found in only a few stands in the western part of the country. It has recently been observed in the area of the Białowieża Primeval Forest, where 81 specimens of T. melis (48 females, 7 males and 26 nymph forms) were collected from two female European badgers, mainly from the fur of the head area. No symptoms of infestation were observed.

Leptospirosis in free-ranging endangered European mink (Mustela lutreola) and other small carnivores (Mustelidae, Viverridae) from southwestern France.

To study the possible role of disease in the decline of endangered European mink (Mustela lutreola), we conducted a survey of antibody prevalence and renal carriage of pathogenic leptospira (Leptospira interrogans sensu lato) using serum and kidney samples collected from 1990 to 2007 from several free-ranging small carnivores and farmed American mink (Mustela vison) in southwestern France. An indirect microscopic agglutination test using a panel of 16 serovars belonging to 6 serogroups (Australis, Autumnalis, Icterohæmorrhagiæ, Grippotyphosa, Panama, Sejroe) revealed antibodies in all species,

A new species of Versteria (Cestoda: Taeniidae) parasitizing Neogale vison and Lontra canadensis (Carnivora: Mustelidae) from Western Canada.

Via molecular and morphological analyses, we describe adult specimens of a new species of Versteria (Cestoda: Taeniidae) infecting mink and river otter (Carnivora: Mustelidae) in Western Canada, as well as larval forms from muskrat and mink. These sequences closely matched those reported from adult specimens from Colorado and Oregon, as well as larval infections in humans and a captive orangutan. We describe here a new species from British Columbia and Alberta (Canada), Versteria rafei n. sp., based upon morphological diagnostic characteristics and genetic distance and phylogeny. Postcranial functional morphology of the large swamp otter Siamogale melilutra (Lutrinae: Mustelidae: Carnivora) from northeastern Yunnan, south-western China.

Siamogale melilutra was a large otter from the Late Miocene site of Shuitangba in Yunnan Province, China. Previous analyses have hypothesized that the species was a molluscivore and a dominant predator in an otherwise depauperate local carnivoran guild. Here we describe limb elements of S. melilutra and perform quantitative analyses to categorize the functional morphology of the species to better understand its role in the predominantly aquatic and near-water environments at Shuitangba. Our results indicate morphological similarities to both semi-aquatic and semi-fossorial modern mustelids. Th

A new species of Skrjabingylus Petrov, 1927 (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidea) from the frontal sinuses of the hooded skunk, Mephitis macroura (Mustelidae).

Skrjabingylus santaceciliae n. sp. is described based on specimens from the frontal sinuses of a hooded skunk, Mephitis macroura, collected from the Area de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Skrjabingylus santaceciliae n. sp. differs from the other 5 species in the genus in having pointed spicule tips that lack a rounded or lobed formation and by lacking a prominent distal projection at the tail tip. Morphometric comparisons show that S. santaceciliae n. sp. is much smaller than the only other valid species from Mephitis, Skrjabingylus chitwoodorum Hill, 1939. Likewise, morphometric compari
