Muzolimine produces a diuresis in the loop of Henle. Unlike other diuretics of this kind, the effect of muzolimine is slow and its action is long lasting. Long-term treatment with muzolimine in patients with essential hypertension has provided very interesting results. Muzolimine is a diuretic with chemical features different from all other known diuretics, and its use seem to be particularly interesting in patients with chronic renal failure. Thiazide therapy is a widely used first line treatment for arterial hypertension. Muzolimine, the new sulphonamide-free loop-diuretic with both high ceiling and long-lasting activities, was tested in 21 adult patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) (creatinine clearance ranging from 30 to 5 ml/min) and acute fluid overload.
