The aetiology of acute lameness in pigs 3-5 months of age in nine Danish herds with high incidences of lameness was investigated. Eighty-seven acutely lame pigs, that exhibited lameness of varying degree in the hind legs, were selected. Non-lame pigs were matched on pen, sex and weight. The lame pigs had soft fluctuating joint swellings (odds ratio (OR), 7.21; 95% confidence interval (CI), 3.41-15.47). No indication of suppurative arthritis was observed. Joint infection with Mycoplasma hyosynoviae was found by culture in 20% (17 of 86) of the lame pigs and in 8% (seven of 83) of the non-lame p

The occurrence of Mycoplasma hyosynoviae in synovial fluid of baconers with chronic arthritis was studied at an abattoir. Cultural examination of synovial fluid samples from diseased tarsal joints of 50 animals from 42 herds yielded M. hyosynoviae in 10 cases from 8 herds. Streptococci were found in 6 cases from 6 other herds. M. hyosynoviae antigen was found in 1 of 47 of the samples, and antibody to the mycoplasma was found in 14 of 40 of the samples by ELISA test. The presence of M. hyosynoviae in a joint was usually accompanied by the corresponding antibody. In joints with streptococcal in

Mycoplasma hyorhinis and M. hyosynoviae are agents associated with arthritis in pigs. This study investigated the tonsillar detection patterns of M. hyorhinis and M. hyosynoviae in a swine population with a history of lameness. The plausibility of dual PCR detection of these agents in dams at one and three weeks post-farrowing and their offspring at the same time was determined. The association between M. hyorhinis and M. hyosynoviae detection in piglets and potential development of lameness in wean-to-finish stages was evaluated by correlating individual piglet lameness scores and PCR detecti

Mycoplasma hyosynoviae (M. hyosynoviae) is a commensal bacterium that can induce lameness in growing and finishing pigs, contributing to welfare concerns in swine production. The objective of this study was to characterize the natural humoral immune response to M. hyosynoviae in various ages of pigs commercially raised in the United States. Three > 2500 sow farms and their downstream sites were enrolled in the study. One herd presented a history of M. hyosynoviae-associated lameness in growing/finishing age pigs (affected), while two farms and their downstream flows were apparently healthy (no

Glaesserella parasuis, Mycoplasma hyorhinis, and Mycoplasma hyosynoviae are important porcine pathogens responsible for polyserositis, polyarthritis, meningitis, pneumonia, and septicemia causing significant economic losses in the swine industry. A new multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was designed on one hand for the detection of G. parasuis and the virulence marker vtaA to distinguish between highly virulent and non-virulent strains. On the other hand, fluorescent probes were established for the detection and identification of both M. hyorhinis and M. hyosynoviae target

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma (M.) hyopharyngis, M. hyopneumoniae, M. hyorhinis, and M. hyosynoviae can all be transiently present in the swine tonsils without causing any clinical signs or lesions. M. hyopharyngis is considered a commensal bacterium, however, our knowledge about its prevalence and pathogenic capabilities is lacking. M. hyopneumoniae, M. hyorhinis and M. hyosynoviae are widespread pathogens, responsible for significant economic losses. M. hyopneumoniae is known as the causative agent of porcine enzootic pneumonia, while M. hyorhinis and M. hyosynoviae are associated with arthritis an

The aim of this study was to investigate whether direct PCR (DP) gave similar results to culture prior to PCR (CPP) for detecting mycoplasmas in different types of pig tissues. A total of 724 samples obtained from lungs, tonsils, or synovial fluids from 270 slaughtered pigs were used. The history of clinical signs, lung score, and the presence of joint lesions were recorded during sample collection. The rates of detection of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Mycoplasma hyosynoviae, and Mycoplasma hyorhinis using both procedures were evaluated. The overall prevalences of M. hyopneumoniae, M. hyosynovia

Lameness in pigs is a major welfare and economic concern, with infectious arthritis being an important contributor. Mycoplasma hyosynoviae is a recognized cause of arthritis in finisher pigs globally, yet its occurrence and clinical relevance in Norway have not been systematically investigated. This small-scale study aimed to elucidate the aetiology of acute lameness in finisher pigs in southwestern Norway through systematic necropsies and microbiological analyses. Between September 2020 and April 2022, ten farms in Rogaland County with recurrent episodes of acute lameness were enrolled. Farm

Mycoplasma hyosynoviae causes arthritis in pigs older than 12 weeks. The role of colostrum in protection of piglets against M. hyosynoviae infection is not clear. Our objective was therefore to investigate whether transfer of maternal immunity to piglets was involved in early protection against the infection. Experimental infections were carried out in three groups of weaners receiving different levels of M. hyosynoviae-specific colostrum components; Group NC derived from Mycoplasma free sows and possessed no specific immunity to M. hyosynoviae. Group CAb pigs, siblings of the NC group, receiv

Mycoplasma (M.) hyorhinis and M. hyosynoviae are pathogens known to cause disease in pigs post-weaning. Due to their fastidious nature, there is increased need for culture-independent diagnostic platforms to detect these microorganisms. Therefore, this study was performed to develop and optimize quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assays to rapidly detect M. hyorhinis and M. hyosynoviae in pen-based oral fluids as well as nasal and tonsillar fluids as proxies for samples used in swine herd surveillance. Two methods of genomic DNA extraction, automated versus manual, were used to compare diagnost

Several mycoplasma species possessing a range of virulence have been described in swine. The most commonly described are Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Mycoplasma hyorhinis, Mycoplasma hyosynoviae, and Mycoplasma flocculare. They are ubiquitious in many pig producing areas of the world, and except for M. hyopneumoniae, commercial antibody-based assays are lacking for most of these. Antibody cross-reactivity among these four mycoplasma species is not well characterized. Recently, the use of pen-based oral fluids for herd surveillance is of increasing interest. Thus, this study sought to measure pig

Mycoplasma (M.) hyosynoviae is a facultative pathogen, causing arthritis in finisher pigs world-wide. In the absence of a commercial vaccine improvement of housing conditions and antibiotic therapy are the only options to alleviate the clinical signs. This study aimed to determine antibiotic susceptibility profiles of 106 M. hyosynoviae isolates against ten antibiotics licensed for veterinary use in cases of arthritis. The isolates were collected between 2018 and 2023 from five European countries: Austria (n = 20), Belgium (n = 20), Germany (n = 25), Hungary (n = 21) and Italy (n = 20). The mi

The in vitro activities of valnemulin (Econor) and two other antimicrobial agents were determined against recent field strains of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Mycoplasma hyosynoviae using a broth microdilution method. Valnemulin showed exceptional activity against M hyopneumoniae (MIC90 0.0005 microgram ml-1) and M hyosynoviae (MIC range 0.0001 microgram ml-1 to 0.00025 microgram ml-1) field strains. Tiamulin was 100-fold less active (MIC90 0.05 microgram ml-1) and enrofloxacin 20-fold less active (MIC90 0.01 microgram ml-1) than valnemulin against M hyopneumoniae field isolates and 20-fold to

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma hyosynoviae arthritis contributes to antimicrobial use and reduced welfare in fattening pig production. No commercial vaccines are available, and the efficacy of autogenous vaccines remains poorly documented. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an autogenous M. hyosynoviae vaccine on lameness occurrence, describe M. hyosynoviae antibody profiles over time, and assess such profiles in relation to lameness development. CASE PRESENTATION: Methods. A randomized, blinded, controlled field trial was conducted in a Norwegian fattening pig herd and its associated piglet-p

Mycoplasma hyosynoviae is a common agent responsible for polyarthritis leading to decreased production in swine herds worldwide. Antimicrobial agents are used to combat infections; however breakpoints for M. hyosynoviae have not yet been established. A number of methods have previously been utilized to analyze minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for antibiotics against M. hyosynoviae; however these techniques as currently described are not easily standardized between laboratories. A dry microbroth dilution method was conducted to compare the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for 18

Mycoplasma (M.) hyosynoviae is known to colonize and cause disease in growing-finishing pigs. In this study, two clinical isolates of M. hyosynoviae were compared by inoculating cesarean-derived colostrum-deprived and specific-pathogen-free growing pigs. After intranasal or intravenous inoculation, the proportion and distribution pattern of clinical cases was compared in addition to the severity of lameness. Tonsils were found to be the primary site of colonization, while bacteremia was rarely detected prior to the observation of clinical signs. Regardless of the clinical isolate, route of ino

The objective of this investigation was to study the pathogenesis of experimental Mycoplasma hyosynoviae arthritis in pigs. The experimental inoculations were designed to provide information about systemic spread, the persistence of subclinical infection, and the length of time for which the mycoplasma is cultivable from synovial fluids and other tissues. In this article we report on the clinical response to infection and the results obtained from re-isolation attempts. In three inoculation experiments with M. hyosynoviae, clinical arthritis was produced by intravenous and by intranasal exposu
