Mycoplasma iowae: a review.

Mycoplasma iowae is an avian mycoplasma which has rather different properties from other avian mycoplasmas such as resistance to bile salts, predilection for the gastrointestinal tract and a relative resistance to many antimicrobials. There is also an unusually large degree of antigenic variation among strains belonging to this species. The Mycoplasma has been isolated from a number of avian hosts, but in natural infections the main manifestation is mortality of turkey embryos in the later stages of incubation. In experimental infections some strains cause chick and turkey embryo mortality and

Mycoplasma iowae infection in young turkeys.

A comparison was made of the effect of five different strains of M. iowae after inoculation of one-day-old poults via the thoracic air sac and foot pad. Three strains appeared to be more virulent and more invasive than the other two, causing stunting, poor feathering and leg abnormalities including chondrodystrophy. One of these three strains was used in a second experiment in which three routes of infection were compared. Infection in ovo caused a severe generalised disease in hatched poults with high mortality. The only two birds which survived into the third week developed chondrodystrophy.

First isolation of Mycoplasma iowae in grey partridge flocks.

Mycoplasma iowae, an occasional pathogen of turkeys, was isolated for the first time from captive grey partridges (Perdix perdix). Clinical signs including respiratory and intestinal disorder were seen in birds of all ages but mainly in those kept housed during rearing. Mortality rates averaged over 20% during the year. Treatment with antibiotics and antiparasitic drugs produced only a transient improvement in condition. The gross pathology findings included poor body growth, lack of development of the breast muscles, abnormalities in the keel development, and bone fragility. Some birds showed

Outbreak of Mycoplasma iowae infection in commercial turkey poults.

In September 1989, 17-day-old turkey poults were submitted to Iowa State University because of leg weakness and dehydration. These birds were commercial large white toms from a flock of 23,214. Lesions observed at necropsy included chondrodystrophy of the hock joints, clear fluid in hock joint spaces, valgus deformities and shortening of the tarsometatarsal bones, and curled toes. Mycoplasma iowae was isolated and identified from swabs of the air sac, cloaca, hock joint, and large intestine. Approximately 1.4% of the flock was culled between 2 and 8 weeks of age because of leg problems. M. iow

In vitro susceptibility of Mycoplasma iowae isolates to antimicrobial agents.

ABSTRACTMycoplasma iowae, a potential re-emerging avian pathogen mainly affecting turkeys, has been reported from many parts of the world. Poor hatchability, embryonic death, joint and skeletal abnormalities, poor ossification, runting-stunting, poor feathering and airsacculitis may be observed in infected flocks. The reduction of the severity of clinical signs and short-term control of M. iowae are performed by antibiotic treatment. However, M. iowae develops resistance more rapidly and is considered to be more resistant to antimicrobials than other avian pathogenic mycoplasmas. The aim of th

The production of Mycoplasma iowae infection of turkey poults suitable for monitoring antimicrobials.

In an attempt to produce a persistent infection with M. iowae (Mi) three separate trials were conducted using strain B 11/80, a virulent strain, strain M 012-118, a recent isolate of unknown virulence, and strain Iowae 695 (I 695), the type strain. In each trial groups of 2-day-old poults were infected via the oesophagus, trachea, cloaca and directly into the lungs. Isolation during life was attempted from the oropharynx and the cloaca, and at necropsy at the end of the experiment (21 days after infection) from the trachea, lungs and airsacs, and the brain. The highest proportion of isolations

Identification and detection of genetic markers associated with antimicrobial susceptibility and evaluation of efflux pump mechanisms in Mycoplasma iowae.

Mycoplasma iowae is an economically significant pathogen that causes reduced hatchability, late embryo mortality and leg deformities, chondrodystrophy and skeletal lesions in poults. While prevention is essential in the control of infection, the appropriate administration of antibiotics may reduce economic losses during outbreaks. As a first step in the exploration of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in M. iowae, target modification and efflux pump activity were examined in the present study. Point mutations were analyzed in previously described antibiotic binding sites in the whole genome

Detection and disease diagnosis trends (2017-2022) for Streptococcus suis, Glaesserella parasuis, Mycoplasma hyorhinis, Actinobacillus suis and Mycoplasma hyosynoviae at Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of disease associated with endemic bacterial agents in pig populations is challenging due to their commensal ecology, the lack of disease-specific antemortem diagnostic tests, and the polymicrobial nature of swine diagnostic cases. The main objective of this retrospective study was to estimate temporal patterns of agent detection and disease diagnosis for five endemic bacteria that can cause systemic disease in porcine tissue specimens submitted to the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ISU VDL) from 2017 to 2022. The study also explored th

Intestinal mycoplasma in Crohn's disease.

Intestinal diversion with reconnection in active Crohn's disease (CD) indicates that luminal contents or bacteria contribute to the formation of CD lesions. Fluorescent staining for mycoplasma in freshly resected Crohn's tissue and electron microscopy reveal intracellular organisms akin to mycoplasma. Historically, tissue culture of CD has shown mycoplasma described as contaminants. Mycoplasma are surface epithelial parasites requiring exogenous cholesterol for membrane stability and cell entry. PCR of intestinal tissue has shown Mycoplasma pneumoniae to be detectable more significantly in CD.

Expression of the monocytic differentiation/activation factor P48 in Mycoplasma species.

P48 is a 48 kd monocytic differentiation/activation factor previously purified from the conditioned medium of the Reh human pre-B cell leukemia line. It induces differentiation of HL-60 promyelocytic leukemia cells along the monocytic pathway and production of IL1, TNF-alpha and IL6 in human monocytes and monocytic cell lines. Recently our laboratory isolated cDNA clones for P48 from Reh cells and genomic clones from Mycoplasma fermentans DNA and showed that P48 is a M. fermentans gene product. In this paper we report the analysis of P48 expression at the DNA, mRNA and protein levels in differ

Mycoplasmoses in poultry.

The most important mycoplasmas isolated from domestic avian species include Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), M. synoviae (MS), M. meleagridis (MM) and M. iowae (MI). MG causes chronic respiratory disease of chickens and infectious sinusitis in turkeys, resulting in economic losses. MS causes infectious synovitis or mild upper respiratory disease. MM infects only turkeys, causing airsacculitis and sub-optimal production and hatchability. MI is associated with reduced hatchability in turkey flocks. Transmission is either direct, from bird to bird or through the egg, or indirect. Diagnosis is based

Mycoplasmas: Brain invaders?

Mycoplasmas of humans and animals are usually associated with respiratory, autoimmune, genital and joint diseases. Human mycoplasmas have also been known to affect the brain. Severe central nervous system (CNS) diseases, such as encephalitis, have been linked to Mycoplasma pneumoniae and ureaplasma infections. Less well known is the sheep and goat pathogen, Mycoplasma agalactiae, which has been found in large quantities in the brain where it may be responsible for non-purulent encephalitis as well as ataxia in young animals. Experimental intra-mammary infections of sheep with this mycoplasma h

Mycoplasma gallinarum infection associated with apparent Mycoplasma meleagridis seropositivity in breeder turkey flocks.

INTRODUCTION: Monitored EU-wide, mycoplasmosis is a significant poultry disease caused by bacteria of the genus Mycoplasma, among which M. gallisepticum, M. synoviae, M. meleagridis and M. iowae are of major importance. Infection can lead to clinical disease and economic losses. Serological assays can give false positive results because of antigenic cross-reactivity among Mycoplasma species. Molecular diagnostics provide greater specificity and reliability. This study investigated suspected cases of Mycoplasma meleagridis infection in turkeys and assessed whether the observed serological react

Insights on Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma synoviae infection in poultry: a systematic review.

Avian mycoplasmosis mainly caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum and M. synoviae is an economically important disease of poultry industry. It causes huge economic losses in terms of decrease in weight gain, feed conversion efficiency, egg production, hatchability; increase in embryo mortality, carcass condemnation, prophylaxis and treatment cost in broiler, layer and breeder flocks. The disease is caused by four major pathogenic mycoplasmas viz., M. gallisepticum (MG), M. synoviae (MS), M. meleagradis (MM) and M. iowae (MI). The MG and MS are World Organization for Animal Health listed respirator

Optimization of an antibiotic sensitivity assay for Mycoplasma hyosynoviae and susceptibility profiles of field isolates from 1997 to 2011.

Mycoplasma hyosynoviae is a common agent responsible for polyarthritis leading to decreased production in swine herds worldwide. Antimicrobial agents are used to combat infections; however breakpoints for M. hyosynoviae have not yet been established. A number of methods have previously been utilized to analyze minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for antibiotics against M. hyosynoviae; however these techniques as currently described are not easily standardized between laboratories. A dry microbroth dilution method was conducted to compare the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for 18

Microbiota shows major difference in case of two shorebird species with different feeding strategy.

Despite the well-known effects of the gut microbiota on mammals, other vertebrates have only recently begun receiving attention in research. Our study focused on describing the cloacal microbiome of Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) and Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola), using 16S rRNA metabarcoding, to understand how different foraging methods can affect their microbiome. Assessing the host microbial diversity, we found that Shannon- (W = 253, p = 0.099), Simpson- (W = 268, p = 0.168) and inverse Simpson- diversities (W = 268, p = 0.168) did not differ significantly, however, there was a tend

Legionnaires' disease in pneumonia patients in Iowa. A retrospective seroepidemiologic study, 1972-1977.

The frequency of Legionnaires' disease among 586 cases of pneumonia that occurred in Iowa between fiscal years 1972 and 1977 was studied retrospectively on the basis of paired sera. The frequency of confirmed Legionnaires' disease was 4.1% and of presumptive Legionnaires' disease was 11.4%. Infections with the Legionnaires' disease (LD) bacterium were most frequent in the summer. Of the 22% of pneumonias for which a cause could be defined, Legionnaires' disease was third in frequency behind Mycoplasma pneumoniae and influenza A virus infections. Infections with the LD bacterium occurred in ass

Assessment of litter prevalence of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in preweaned piglets utilizing an antemortem tracheobronchial mucus collection technique and a real-time polymerase chain reaction assay.

The swine industry currently lacks validated antemortem methods of detecting baseline herd prevalence of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. The focus of our study was to evaluate alternative antemortem detection techniques and to determine baseline litter prevalence in preweaned pig populations utilizing the selected technique and a real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay. Preliminary data was analyzed on weaned piglets with evidence of respiratory disease (n = 32). Five sample types (antemortem nasal swab, tracheobronchial mucus, postmortem deep airway swab, bronchoalveolar lavage, and lung t
