Mycoplasma synoviae is a Gram positive bacteria lacking of cell wall that affects chickens and turkeys causing infection in the upper respiratory tract and in some cases arthritis, with economical impact to broiler breeders. Treatment and prevention of avian synovitis depend on knowledge of the infectious process. Secreted or surface-exposed proteins play a critical role in disease because they often mediate interactions between host and pathogen. In the present work, we sought to identify possible M. synoviae secreted proteins by cultivating the bacteria in a modified protein-free Frey medium

Mycoplasma gallisepticum and M. synoviae are the most relevant mycoplasma species for commercial poultry from the clinical and economic point of view. Although the importance of M. gallisepticum was recognized many decades ago, the relevance of M. synoviae has been a matter of debate. Until the turn of the century, only the respiratory and synovitis forms of the disease were reported, while the majority of infections were subclinical. Since the year 2000 M. synoviae strains with oviduct tropism, able to induce eggshell apex abnormalities and egg drops, have been encountered worldwide. A decrea

Mycoplasma synoviae infection occurs worldwide in commercial poultry flocks and may result in severe economic losses. The prevalence of this mycoplasma in standard layers older than 60 weeks was studied in a French department and the characteristics of infected or free flocks were compared. The genomic profiles of isolates from 36 infected flocks were studied by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and random amplified polymorphic DNA methods in order to investigate possible routes of transmission. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics were determined. Results showed that infection

Mycoplasma synoviae, an important poultry pathogen, belonging to the class Mollicutes, causes airsacculitis, synovitis, decreased egg production and produces significant economic losses. Efforts to determine M. synoviae virulence factors and their role in pathogenicity require suitable tools for genetic manipulation of this pathogen. This study describes, for the first time, the identification and cloning of the origin of replication (oriC) of M. synoviae to develop a replicable oriC vector for this mycoplasma. Shuttle vectors containing different putative oriC regions along with tetracycline

Avian mycoplasmosis mainly caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum and M. synoviae is an economically important disease of poultry industry. It causes huge economic losses in terms of decrease in weight gain, feed conversion efficiency, egg production, hatchability; increase in embryo mortality, carcass condemnation, prophylaxis and treatment cost in broiler, layer and breeder flocks. The disease is caused by four major pathogenic mycoplasmas viz., M. gallisepticum (MG), M. synoviae (MS), M. meleagradis (MM) and M. iowae (MI). The MG and MS are World Organization for Animal Health listed respirator

Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) induces avian synovitis, presenting with tendon inflammation, and respiratory distress, ultimately compromising poultry health and farm productivity. To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of MS in Chinese indigenous chickens, a comprehensive study was conducted on chicken flocks from three breeder farms in Jiangsu, China. A total of 113 batches of chicken flocks were screened using real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Among 3,284 choanal cleft swab samples collected from chickens aged 2 to over 25 weeks, 1,695 tested positive for MS. Notably, the MS

Mycoplasma synoviae is responsible for respiratory tract disease and synovitis in chickens and turkeys. In an attempt to identify the most prominent proteins expressed by this microorganism, a proteome map of M. synoviae was developed by using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis in combination with mass spectrometry. Based on the genome sequence of M. synoviae, a total of 30 different coding DNA sequences, including one hypothetical and one conserved-hypothetical protein, were experimentally verified with the identification of the corresponding protein products by matrix-assisted laser desorpt

Turkey breeder hens showed an increase in mortality beginning at 38 wk of age with no other clinical signs or changes in egg production. While no respiratory signs were observed in live turkeys, those that died consistently had gross lesions of pneumonia. Histopathology of lungs revealed serofibrinous bronchopneumonia, lymphofollicular reaction, and other features suggesting a bacterial etiology. However, except for incidental findings, bacteria were not visualized in the sections examined, and none were isolated in meaningful numbers on routine bacteriologic media. At 42 wk of age the flock s

Infectious synovitis in chickens caused by Mycoplasma synoviae infections are characterized by exudative synovial joint membranes and tenosynovitis. We isolated M. synoviae from chickens on farms in Guangdong, China and identifed 29 K-type and 3 A-type strains using vlhA genotyping and all displayed decreased susceptibilities to enrofloxacin, doxycycline, tiamulin and tylosin compared with the type strain WVU1853 (ATCC 25204). M. synoviae biofilms were present after staining as block or continuous dot shape morphologies and these appeared as tower-like and mushroom-like structures in scanning

INTRODUCTION: Mycoplasma synoviae (M. synoviae) is an economically significant pathogen that causes respiratory infections, synovitis, and arthritis in chickens, inflicting substantial economic losses on the global poultry industry. Its frequent co-infection with other respiratory pathogens, often exacerbates the resultant pathogenic damage. As an important respiratory pathogen, it remains unclear whether Cryptosporidium baileyi (C. baileyi) can cause co-infection with M. synoviae in commercial large-scale poultry farms and what synergistic pathogenic pattern exists between them.

Avian mycoplasmosis has a considerable financial impact on the global chicken industry with Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) and Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) being the dominant causes. Currently, inactivated vaccines provide minimal cross-protection and can't induce high levels of mucosal immunity, indicating the need to develop more effective immunisation platforms. This study aimed at designing and testing rationally engineered live recombinant vaccines using Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium expressing MS- and MG-specific antigens, GrpE and CrmA, to produce a robust immune response. BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma synoviae infection in chickens is associated with development of synovitis and arthritis, leading to a decline in poultry production and significant economic repercussions. However, the mechanism of this infection remains imperfectly known. RESULTS: Prokaryotic transcriptome sequencing was used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in M. synoviae when exposed to mixed cultures of chicken macrophages and chicken embryo fibroblast cells, as well as M. synoviae cultured in vitro. Of 416 DEGs, 262 are upregulated and 122 are downregulated. Ten DEGs were randomly

BACKGROUND: The bacterial pathogen Mycoplasma synoviae can cause subclinical respiratory disease, synovitis, airsacculitis and reproductive tract disease in poultry and is a major cause of economic loss worldwide. The M. synoviae strain MS-H was developed by chemical mutagenesis of an Australian isolate and has been used as a live attenuated vaccine in many countries over the past two decades. As a result it may now be the most prevalent strain of M. synoviae globally. Differentiation of the MS-H vaccine from local field strains is important for epidemiological investigations and is often requ

Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) have been recognized and listed by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) as the two most pathogenic avian mycoplasma species. These organisms can cause a wide range of symptoms in birds, including acute and chronic respiratory diseases, synovitis, air sacculitis, severe weight loss, eggshell abnormalities, and reduced egg production. In Malaysia, previous studies have mainly focused on seroprevalence, and prevalence based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with molecular characterization, which have confirmed the presence of

Among many avian mycoplasmas, Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) are recognized as the main etiological agents of respiratory diseases and infectious synovitis in chickens and turkeys causing tremendous economic losses worldwide. Therefore, proper treatment is promoted for the control of these diseases. This study was the first in Egypt to evaluate the in vitro efficacy of various antimicrobials against field MG and MS isolates recovered from chicken and turkey flocks using both conventional broth microdilution and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction assays

Accurate detection is a prerequisite for effective prevention and control of Mycoplasma synoviae infection. ELISA is the most popular method for the clinical detection of M. synoviae because of its convenience, low cost, and high detection rate. However, the cross-reactivity of commercially available ELISA kits with other avian pathogen-positive sera needs to be addressed. The aim of this study was to establish an ELISA method with high specificity for the detection of anti-M. synoviae antibodies in chicken serum to evaluate the M. synoviae infection status on poultry farms. The recombinant MS

The complex interplay between Mycoplasma synoviae and chicken chondrocytes (CCH), which come into direct contact during infectious synovitis, has been examined at the level of gene expression. Our previous studies demonstrated a significant influence of M. synoviae on the level of CCH gene expression. Here, we show for the first time that in vitro co-cultivation of M. synoviae and CCH also induces upregulation of gene expression in this mycoplasma. We observed significantly increased expression of genes important for M. synoviae pathogenicity, including cysteine protease cysP, neuraminidase na

Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma synoviae are bacterial pathogens that cause disease in poultry, adversely affecting their health and welfare, and are a financial burden on producers. This manuscript describes the results of the MycoPath project that is the first international antimicrobial susceptibility programme for mycoplasma pathogens isolated from poultry. Improved comparative analysis of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) results from participating countries was facilitated by using one laboratory determining all MICs. Chicken and turkey isolates were obtained from France, Ge

Infections caused by Mycoplasma synoviae are major welfare and economic concerns in poultry industries worldwide. These infections cause chronic respiratory disease and/or synovitis in chickens and turkeys leading to reduced production and increased mortality rates. The live attenuated vaccine strain MS-H (Vaxsafe® MS), commonly used for protection against M. synoviae infection in many countries, contains 32 single nucleotide variations compared to its wildtype parent strain, 86079/7NS. Genomic analysis of vaccine strains reisolated from flocks following the administration of MS-H has identifi
