Neuronal Death in the CNS Autonomic Control Center Comes Very Early after Cardiac Arrest and Is Not Significantly Attenuated by Prompt Hypothermic Treatment in Rats.

Autonomic dysfunction in the central nervous system (CNS) can cause death after recovery from a cardiac arrest (CA). However, few studies on histopathological changes in animal models of CA have been reported. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of neuronal death and damage in various brain regions and the spinal cord at early times after asphyxial CA and we studied the relationship between the mortality rate and neuronal damage following hypothermic treatment after CA. Rats were subjected to 7-8 min of asphyxial CA, followed by resuscitation and prompt hypothermic treatment. Eight r

Multi-focal cerebral oligoastrocytoma in a puppy.

A nine-month-old puppy was presented for investigation of seizures. Neurological deficits were found localising to the prosencephalon, mesencephalon and myelencephalon. Magnetic resonance imaging identified multiple, large lesions involving both cerebral hemispheres. Management with antiepileptic and immunomodulatory drugs was instituted; however, the seizures became progressively refractory and the puppy was euthanased. Histopathology following post-mortem examination found a mixed glial cell tumour with discrete areas where neoplastic cells appeared oligodendroglial or astrocytic. Primary in

Developmental trajectories of the human embryologic brain regions.

Vertebrate brains commonly consist of five basic embryologic anatomical regions: telencephalon; diencephalon; mesencephalon; metencephalon; and myelencephalon. The proportions of these regions vary widely across species and developmental stages. Investigation of their growth trajectories, therefore, has the potential to provide an understanding of the substrates of inter-species variation in neuroanatomy and function. To investigate the volumetric growth trajectories, structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans obtained from 618 healthy children (334 boys, 284 girls; ages 3-17 years old)

Borrelia rhombencephalomyelopathy.

Three patients, in whom the diagnosis of Borrelia burgdorferi infection was unknown for several years, developed a biphasic involvement of the central nervous system: an acute brain-stem dysfunction was followed up, in two patients, by a progressive, disabling myelitis and, in one patient, by further relapsing-remitting episodes of severe multifocal rhombencephalitis. The most consistent cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities in the analysis of sequential specimens were elevated total IgM levels that normalized after penicillin therapy. The neuropathologic findings in one patient showed microgliosi

Suspected spontaneous early hemorrhagic transformation of multiple ischemic strokes secondary to primary splenic torsion in a German Shepherd dog.

A 3-year-old female German Shepherd dog was presented with generalized tonic-clonic epileptic seizures, right-sided central vestibular syndrome, and right trigeminal nerve dysfunction. Acute lacunar ischemic strokes within both thalami, right side of the mesencephalon, left side of the myelencephalon, both sides of the cervical spinal cord, and acute hemorrhagic strokes within the rostral part of the right cerebellar hemisphere and right rostral colliculus were identified on magnetic resonance imaging. Additional evaluation identified multiple renal infarcts and complete splenic torsion, with

Distribution of monoamine-containing neurons in the brain of a teleost, Carassius auratus (Cyprinidae).

The occurrence and distribution of monoamine-(MA) containing neurons and fibres in the brain of Carassius was investigated by formaldehyde-induced fluorescence (FIF) histochemistry (Falck-Hillarp technique). Many brightly green-fluorescent nerve cell perikarya were found in the nucleus dorsolateralis and ventromedialis, in the nucleus posterioris periventricularis, in the nucleus recessus lateralis and posterioris. They also occurred in the mesencephalic nucleus lateralis valvulae, in the metencephalic nucleus gustatorius secundus and near the ventricular borders of the facial and vagal lobes

Neuroscience: unveiling the brain of Saimiri collinsi (Squirrel Monkey).

Behavioral intelligence among non-human primates is a somewhat puzzling area to study, since it is closely linked to the morphology of the central nervous system. However, this morphology is still unknown to science in the case of Saimiri collinsi. As a means of assisting future studies on the social behavior of this species, we analyzed the brains of six adult females from the National Primate Center / Pará, which were sent to the Animal Morphological Research Laboratory at the Federal Rural University of Amazônia after death by natural causes. The animals were fixed in formaldehyde solution

Iatrogenic brainstem injury during cerebellomedullary cistern puncture.

Cerebrospinal fluid collection is fundamental to the investigation of central nervous system disorders although it carries potential risks. Herein we report the clinical signs and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings associated with needle injury to the brainstem during cerebellomedullary cistern puncture in four dogs. Three dogs were nonambulatory tetraparetic with cranial nerve deficits and one dog had unexplained left thoracic limb paresis. In MR images, there were conspicuous T2 hyperintensities in the myelencephalon in all dogs. In T2* gradient echo images, the lesions were hypointens

Autoradiographic localization of progestin-concentrating cells in the brain of the zebra finch.

The production of song in passerine birds is under the control of steroid hormones, and brain regions involved in song production have been shown to contain androgen and/or estrogen receptors. Studies to date, however, have not considered the possible role of progestins in this behavior. As one approach to this question, the autoradiographic method was used to investigate the distribution of progestin-concentrating cells in the brain of the adult male zebra finch (Poephila guttata) after injection of the radiolabeled synthetic progestin [17 alpha-methyl-3H]-promegestone. In the telencephalon,

Choroid Plexus Cyst in a Neonatal Burmeister's Porpoise (Phocoena spinipinnis).

Neuroectodermal developmental anomalies are reported rarely in cetaceans and central nervous system cysts are not described. We describe the gross, microscopical, histochemical and immunohistochemical features of a neuraxial myelencephalic cyst in a stranded neonatal Burmeister's porpoise (Phocoena spinipinnis). Grossly, a subdural, extra-axial, well-demarcated, yellow fluid-filled cystic structure (1.9 × 1.6 × 1 cm) expanded the left foramen of Luschka, the left caudolateral cerebellar recess and the left cranioventral myelencephalon. The cyst displaced the ipsilateral ventral paraflocculus a

Vitamin A-deficient quail embryos have half a hindbrain and other neural defects.

BACKGROUND: Retinoic acid (RA) is a morphogenetically active signalling molecule thought to be involved in the development of severely embryonic systems (based on its effect when applied in excess and the fact that it can be detected endogenously in embryos). Here, we adopt a novel approach and use the vitamin A-deficient (A-) quail embryo to ask what defects these embryos show when they develop in the absence of RA, with particular reference to the nervous system. RESULTS: We have examined the anatomy, the expression domains of a variety of genes and the immunoreactivity to several antibodie

Structural and functional anatomy of the brainstem.

The brainstem connects the forebrain to the spinal cord. It consists of three layers, the ventral basis, the intermediate tegmentum, and the dorsal tectum. Caudo-rostrally, the brainstem is divided into the medulla oblongata or myelencephalon, the metencephalon, and the mesencephalon. The tegmentum is the most conserved part of the brainstem and contains the motor and sensory nuclei of cranial nerves (CN) III-XII. They are arranged in a mediolateral direction, and, unlike the spinal cord, their afferent and efferent fibers are not macroscopically separated. The tegmental reticular formation, t

Stage-specific expression of alkaline phosphatase during neural development in the mouse.

The expression pattern of tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) in the developing neural tube of mouse is reported. Homogeneous AP activity in the neuroepithelium becomes prominent at E8.5. At E9.5, distinctly AP-positive cells appear in the brain and spinal cord area. At stages E10.5 to E12.5, AP positivity is observed between the mesencephalon and the rhombencephalon, along the entire spinal cord and cranial nerves emerging from the myelencephalon. At E13.5, strongly AP positive fibers become prominent in the pons. At E14.5, AP expression in brain tissue is considerably reduced and

Transgenic Expression of A Venous Malformation Related Mutation, TIE2-R849W, Significantly Induces Multiple Malformations of Zebrafish.

A TIE2 mutation causing arginine-to-tryptophan substitution at residue 849 (TIE2-R849W) is commonly identified in heredofamilial venous malformation. However, there is no in vivo model to confirm the pathogenic role of TIE2-R849W. Humanized TIE2-R849W plasmid was constructed via PCR-mediated site-directed mutagenesis. After transcription and micro-injection, TIE2-R849W significantly induces multiple malformations in zebrafish: caudal vein plexus (CVP) defect, eye abnormalities, forebrain formation perturbations, and mandibular malformation. Histologically, these phenotypes accompany aphakia, c

Distribution of protease-resistant prion protein and spongiform encephalopathy in free-ranging mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) with chronic wasting disease.

Serial sections of brain and palatine tonsil were examined by immunohistochemical staining (IHC) using monoclonal antibody F89/160.1.5 for detecting protease-resistant prion protein (PrP(res)) in 35 hunter-killed mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) with chronic wasting disease. Serial sections of brain were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and examined for spongiform encephalopathy (SE). Clinical signs of disease were not observed in any of these deer. On the basis of the location and abundance of IHC and the location and severity of SE, deer were placed into four categories. Category 1 (n = 8)

Mechanisms underlying the generation of autonomorespiratory coupling amongst the respiratory central pattern generator, sympathetic oscillators, and cardiovagal premotoneurons.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The respiratory rhythm and pattern and sympathetic and parasympathetic outflows are generated by distinct, though overlapping, propriobulbar arrays of neuronal microcircuit oscillators constituting networks utilizing mutual excitatory and inhibitory neuronal interactions, residing principally within the metencephalon and myelencephalon, and modulated by synaptic influences from the cerebrum, thalamus, hypothalamus, cerebellum, and mesencephalon and ascending influences deriving from peripheral stimuli relayed by cranial nerve afferent axons. Though the respiratory and cardiovascular regulatory

A well-preserved cranium from the Judith River Formation (Montana, USA) reveals the inner ear and neuroanatomy of a Campanian baenid turtle.

A cranium belonging to a baenid turtle was recently recovered from the lower half of the Judith River Formation, Montana. Badlands Dinosaur Museum (BDM) 004 is a well-preserved partial cranium that includes the posterior cranial vault, cranial base, and otic capsules. Based on diagnostic characters, the skull can be attributed to Plesiobaena antiqua, which has been previously reported from the Judith River Formation. It also shares with palatobaenines projecting posterior processes of the tubercula basioccipitale and a prominent condylus occipitalis with a deep central pit, demonstrating varia

Immunocytochemical localization of angiotensinogen in the rat brain.

The distribution of angiotensinogen-like immunoreactivity in the rat brain was investigated using specific antisera against pure rat plasma angiotensinogen in conjunction with the sensitive streptavidin-biotin peroxidase method. Angiotensinogen antisera were shown by radioimmunoassay and Western blotting to recognize angiotensinogen from both rat plasma and cerebrospinal fluid, and to cross-react with des-AI-angiotensinogen (100%) but not with angiotensin I and II, tetradecapeptide, luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone, rat albumin and angiotensinogen from eight other species. The organization of the reptilian formation: a comparative study using Nissl and Golgi techniques.

The brainstem reticular formation has been studied in 16 genera representing 11 families of reptiles. Measurements of Nissl-stained reticular neurons revealed that they are distributed along a continuum, ranging in length from 10 micrometer to 95 micrometer. Reticular neurons in crocodilians and snakes tend to be larger than those found in lizards and turtles. Golgi studies revealed that reticular neurons possess long, rectilinear, sparsely branching dendrites. Small reticular neurons (less than 31 micrometers length) possess fusiform or triangular somata which bear two or three primary dendri

Comparison of two fat-suppressed magnetic resonance imaging pulse sequences to standard t2-weighted images for brain parenchymal contrast and lesion detection in dogs with inflammatory intracranial disease.

T2-weighted (T2w) sequences are commonly relied upon in magnetic resonance imaging protocols for the detection of brain lesions in dogs. Previously, the effect of fluid suppression via fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) has been compared to T2-weighting with mixed results. Short tau inversion recovery (STIR) has been reported to increase the detection of some CNS lesions in people. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effect of fat suppression on brain parenchymal contrast resolution and lesion detection in dogs. We compared three sequences: T2w images, STIR, and T2w F
