Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a regional musculoskeletal pain disorder characterized by trigger points within the muscle or fascia. There are no universally accepted diagnostic criteria. Diagnosis currently is based on a physical examination finding of at least one localized trigger point that, when palpated, recreates the pain at the site or produces pain away from the site in a referral pattern. MPS is thought to be related to sustained muscle contraction from under- or overuse. This syndrome commonly coexists with other chronic pain conditions, including fibromyalgia. The difference bet

Myofascial pain is very often underscored and misunderstood in clinical practice. In many cases the localization of myofascial pain may resemble other diseases, such as radicular syndromes (e.g., low back pain from herniated disc) and even diseases of internal organs (e.g., angina pectoris, bowel diseases or gynaecological disturbances). In pain clinics one can routinely see patients with myofascial painful disorders showing a radicular topography and normal CT and MRI: as a consequence, when vertebral abnormalities are present on CT or MRI, it should be checked whether the cause of pain is ra

Myofascial pain refers to a specific form of soft-tissue rheumatism that results from irritable foci (trigger points) within skeletal muscles and their ligamentous junctions. It must be distinguished from bursitis, tendonitis, hypermobility syndromes, fibromyalgia and fasciitis. On the other hand it often exists as part of a clinical complex that includes these other soft-tissue conditions, i.e., it is not a diagnosis of exclusion. The clinical science of trigger points can be traced to the pioneering work of Kellgren in the 1930s, with his mapping of myotomal referral patterns of pain resulti

BackgroundThis is an updated version of the original Cochrane review published in Issue 4, 2012. Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a regional muscular pain syndrome characterised by the presence of trigger points, which are painful points in one or more muscles. The pain can be felt at the site where the trigger point is located or it can be felt away from that place when the muscle is pressed (referred pain). Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and is a potent neurotoxin that eventually inhibits muscle contractions. It is capable of selectively weakeni

It is unable to identify any kind of structural abnormalities in about 85% patients affected with muscle pain. Sometimes is one mucle received with pains, commonly because of stress or fatigue (epecially after intensive training process). It is called myfascial pain syndrom (MPS). When more muscles are affected it is called fibromyalgia.

Myofascial pain syndromes, stemming from trigger points within the muscles, represent a prevalent cause of localized or generalized pain in clinical practice. They have a high incidence rate and currently lack specific curative methods. Trigger point injection therapy is the most popular clinical approach, focusing primarily on these trigger points. Injectable drugs like glucose, normal saline, local anesthetics, botulinum toxin type A, steroid preparations, and platelet-rich plasma are available for this purpose. This treatment is advantageous due to its low cost and minimally invasive nature

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) has sometimes been hypothesized to derive from a unique psychological predisposition because of its enigmatic features, as well as the profound behavioral and emotional characteristics manifested by some patients. This study compares the psychological characteristics of RSD and myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) patients to discern the extent of any aspects unique to RSD.
METHODS: The patients included 58 with RSD and 214 with MPS, all of whom completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) as well as a pain questionna

OBJECTIVE: To study different methods of treatment of patients with myofascial pain syndrome (MFPS).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We evaluated the efficacy of complex treatment in 152 patients with chronic tension-type headache (СЕЕР) and 96 patients with facial MFPS. The treatment included standard methods (reflex therapy of СЕЕР and local injections of a combination of local anesthetics with small doses of steroids in trigger points in patients with facial MFPS. To assess the efficacy of tizanidine, patients were randomized into two comparable groups. The duration of the study was 12 weeks.

SYNOPSIS: Myofascial pain syndromes (MPSs) affect a significant portion of the population. However, they remain controversial because their etiology, diagnostics, and effect mechanisms rely on theoretical frameworks with limited scientific rigor. This Viewpoint highlights 3 main challenges and proposes solutions: First, diagnosis lacks consistent criteria and is at risk of verification and incorporation biases. Tightened diagnostic criteria and differentiating myofascial pain syndrome from competing conditions will improve accuracy in research and clinical practice. Second, the etiology/pain m

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate a program for managing myofascial pain syndrome (MPS).
DESIGN: The study design was a randomized controlled trial.
SETTING: The setting was the pain clinic of an academic hospital in Taiwan.
PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-two (62) patients with a 3-month or longer history of MPS who were treated at this institution from July to November 2007 were included in the study.
INTERVENTIONS: The participants were randomized to an experimental group (n = 32) or a control group (n = 30). Both groups underwent trigger-point dry needling and muscle-stretch e

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is one of the least understood yet commonly encountered problems in the outpatient setting. Myofascial pain syndrome is a painful disorder characterized by trigger points (TrPs), which are hyperirritable spots causing referred pain. Myofascial pain syndrome is frustrating to patients and clinicians. Unfortunately, MPS often goes unrecognized, misdiagnosed, or mistreated, leading to unnecessary pain, suffering, and disability. When treated properly, MPS has an excellent prognosis. Besides specific TrP therapy, treatment involves lifestyle changes and long-term man

Tufted angioma is a rare acquired vascular tumor. It is characterized by painful purplish macules that may progress to plaques containing angiomatous papules. The condition is benign; however, it often affects extensive areas of the skin, leading to functional disability of the affected limb if painful. The present report describes a case of a tufted angioma associated with myofascial pain syndrome in which the predisposing element was the presence of this tumor since childhood. Pain at the site of the lesion affected muscle use and led to the onset of the associated syndrome. Complete relief

Fibromyalgia and widespread pain were common in Gulf War veterans with unexplained illness referred to a rheumatology clinic. Increased tenderness was demonstrated in the postmenstrual phase of the cycle compared with the intermenstrual phase in normally cycling women but not in users of oral contraceptives. Patients with fibromyalgia had high levels of symptoms that have been used to define silicone implant-associated syndrome. Tender points were found to be a common transient finding associated with acute infectious mononucleosis, but fibromyalgia was an unusual long-term outcome. The common

INTRODUCTION: Masticatory myofascial pain syndrome can present similarly to other dental conditions in odontogenetic structures. Endodontists should be familiar with the symptomology and pathophysiology of masticatory myofascial pain syndrome to avoid misdiagnosis, incorrect treatment, and medicolegal repercussions. The aim of this review was to provide a foundational summary for endodontists to identify and correctly manage masticatory myofascial pain syndrome.
METHODS: A narrative review of the literature was performed through a MEDLINE search and a hand search of the major myofascial pain

INTRODUCTION: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a common chronic pain disorder that lacks effective diagnostic criteria. To better understand neurophysiological changes in chronic pain, several trials exploring corticospinal excitability in different populations of patients with chronic pain have been performed.
OBJECTIVES: In this systematic review, we aimed to investigate the current literature on MPS and intracortical disinhibition, by means of increased intracortical facilitation and decreased intracortical inhibition (ICI).
METHODS: We performed a search on PubMed to identify clinical t

The prevalence of fibromyalgia in the general population was found to be 2% and increased with age. Multiple traumatic factors, including sexual and physical abuse, may be important initiating events. The most important pathophysiologic studies in fibromyalgia included evidence of altered blood flow to the brain and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal dysfunction. The prevalence of chronic fatigue syndrome is much less than that of fibromyalgia. Epidemiologic studies demonstrated that chronic fatigue and symptoms of fibromyalgia are distributed as continuous variables in the general population. No

The diagnosis of myofascial pain syndrome is usually made after structural-morphological explanations have been ruled out. The lack of positive findings to guide treatment inevitably leaves room for interpretation despite the extensive use of all imaging, neurophysiological or serological diagnostics. Under these circumstances, a careful differential diagnosis must be made between functional and structural aspects, both of which in many cases must be assessed in their different relevance. Particular attention must be paid to indications of vegetative-sympathetic adjustment disorders. The great
