Infantile Myofibroma of Scalp.

Infantile myofibroma (IM) is the most common congenital fibrous tumor of infancy, originating from fibroblasts and myofibroblasts and present at birth in approximately 50%-60% of cases. Solitary IMs most often develop in the head and neck, less frequently on the trunk or extremities, and usually have an excellent prognosis in the absence of visceral involvement. Clinically, IM appears as a painless, firm, bluish-purple, freely mobile nodule and may occasionally show ulceration or skin atrophy, clinically mimicking hemangioma. Imaging typically shows well-defined masses with low-flow or periphe

Congenital cranio-orbital myofibroma.

A 1-day-old female newborn presenting with a severe left proptosis was found, on imaging, to have a cranial mass extending in both orbits and ethmoid sinuses. Tumor debulking and biopsy were performed through a lateral orbitotomy. Based on histologic findings, a diagnosis of infantile myofibroma was made. No involvement was found in other areas of the body. The patient died because of respiratory arrest after intracranial surgery that was performed 45 days after the orbital surgery. To the authors' knowledge, only one similar case of cranio-orbital myofibroma has been reported previously. This

Myofibroma in Infancy and Childhood.

Myofibromas are rare fibroblastic-myofibroblastic tumors in children. Their biological behavior is unpredictable and spontaneous regressions have been described. This is a retrospective review of clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcome of children diagnosed with myofibroma between 1999 and 2013 at Texas Children's Hospital. The median age at diagnosis of 42 patients was 37 months. Approximately two thirds of the patients were male. The median length of follow-up was 50.5 months (range, 0 to 165 mo). Thirty-eight patients (90%) had solitary lesions; 19 (50%) in the head and neck, 10 (2

Solitary myofibroma of the sclera.

PURPOSE: To report a novel case of solitary myofibroma involving the sclera. METHODS: Case report and review of the literature. RESULTS: A 19-year-old woman had an expanding and painful epibulbar mass clinically diagnosed as nodular scleritis that did not respond to anti-inflammatory therapy. A biopsy showed a proliferation of spindle-shaped cells that reacted strongly positively with immunoperoxidase stains for vimentin and smooth-muscle actin. The diagnosis of solitary myofibroma was made. Six months postoperatively, the patient was well, and the lesion had not recurred. CONCLUSIONS: Myof

Myofibromas of the jaws in children.

PURPOSE: Controversy exists as to the most appropriate treatment strategy for myofibromas of the jaws: en bloc resection versus enucleation. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the treatment outcomes in children with these uncommon benign tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of pediatric patients with jaw myofibromas. The predictor variables included patient demographics, clinical presentation, imaging characteristics, pathologic features, treatment, and follow-up. The outcome variable was cure or recurrence. The descriptive statistics were com

A Chest Wall Myofibroma in an Adult.

INTRODUCTION: Myofibroma is a rare benign tumor that often involves the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and/or bone in the head and neck, typically developing in children. Adult cases, particularly in the chest wall, are extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old asymptomatic Chinese man presented with an abnormal chest X-ray showing a shadow in the left lung apex. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed a 2.5 × 2.0 cm nodule infiltrating the second rib. Positron emission tomography showed an accumulation of 18F-fluorodexyglucose in the nodule. A CT-guided biopsy revealed spindle-shaped cell

Solitary infantile gastrointestinal myofibroma: case report.

We report a case of a 7-year-old child who required emergency surgery for acute abdomen and suspected acute appendicitis. During surgery a tumor located in the small bowel that caused intestinal occlusion was found. Histopathologic analysis showed a solitary gastrointestinal myofibroma. This is a very rare tumor, especially as a single lesion, because in world literature, there are less than 10 cases reported.

Unresectable infantile myofibroma discovered in utero.

The authors present a case of a proliferative nodule located beneath an infant's lower lip that was initially discovered on prenatal ultrasound and fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Biopsy revealed a smooth muscle actin-positive spindled cell proliferation with hemangiopericytoma-like vessels consistent with infantile myofibromatosis (IM). Since the location prevented surgical management, the clinicians opted to observe the lesion. Ultimately, the lesion fully regressed on its own confirming conservative management is an option for isolated IM.

Mandibular Myofibroma With Impacted Teeth in a Child.

BACKGROUND: Myofibroma is a benign mesenchymal tumor derived from myofibroblasts. It is more common in children 's head and neck, but it is rare to involve the mandible and is easily confused with other jaw lesions. CASE: This article reported a 13-year-old female patient with mandibular myofibroma associated with impacted teeth. The lesion presented insidiously as a painless swelling of the mandible. Imaging revealed a well-circumscribed expansile bone lesion. Intraoperatively, a firm gray-white mass with a clear demarcation from the surrounding bone was identified, and curettage was perform

A rare case of a myofibroma presenting on the tongue.

Myofibromas are benign neoplasms of myofibroblastic origin, rarely encountered in the oral cavity. Limited awareness of the clinical features of these lesions risks misdiagnosis of more sinister pathology. The objective of this report is to highlight the potential diversity of oral lesions by describing an uncommon presentation of a myofibroma. The case reveals the diagnostic difficulties encountered, along with postoperative complications, which exemplify the remarkable healing capacity of the oral cavity.

Solitary cutaneous myofibroma of the glans penis.

In the present report, we describe a cutaneous myofibroma with a monophasic pattern. The patient was a 12-year-old white boy with an asymptomatic yellow nodule on his glans penis for about 2 1/2 months. The nodular pattern of growth is distinctive: nests of plump spindle cells with a tendency toward interstitial hyalinization within the dermis. Confirmation of the myofibroblastic nature of the proliferation was obtained by histochemical and immunohistochemical studies. The tumor cells showed immunoreactivities for vimentin, alpha-smooth-muscle actin, and collagen type IV but did not stain for

[Facial myofibroma of the newborn simulating sarcoma].

INTRODUCTION: Myofibromatosis is a rare but probably under estimated tumor. OBSERVATION: We report a case of a newborn presenting with a facial tumor suggestive of sarcoma. Discrepancy between clinical features and histologic pattern of angioma suggested the diagnosis of myofibroma. The diagnostic of myofibromatosis was made later by specific labelling (actin-smooth muscle) and was confirmed by major spontaneous involution. DISCUSSION: The histology of myofibroma associates fibrous and angiomatous patterns that may be confusing when examining a small biopsy. Due to confusing semiology and hi

Sphenoid Dysplasia: A Rare Presentation of Infantile Myofibroma.

The authors report a case of isolated congenital orbital myofibroma causing sphenoid dysplasia and presenting as global restriction of extraocular motility and ptosis in a neonate. Sphenoid wing dysplasia is most commonly associated neurofibromatosis 1 but this patient had no evidence of neurofibromatosis on clinical examination and genetic testing. Congenital orbital myofibroma can have secondary effects on bone and likely the lesion was present early in development leading to aplasia of the sphenoid bone. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of sphenoid wing

Oral myofibroma presenting as an aggressive gingival lesion.

Myofibromas are benign neoplasms of myofibroblastic origin and rarely encountered in the oral cavity. Myofibroma may frequently grow rapidly leading to suspicion of malignancy. This may lead to a tendency for aggressive management. The histopathology of this tumour has similarity with other spindle cell tumours and often requires immunohistochemical staining for diagnosis. Here, we present a case of myofibroma in a 15-year-old female patient who reported with an aggressive gingival swelling and discuss the various histopathological differential diagnosis.

Solitary central myofibroma presenting in the gnathic region.

Solitary myofibroma of adults is an uncommon neoplasm that typically arises in soft tissue and subcutaneous sites in the head and neck, but rarely within bone. When encountered in the jaws, the lesions exhibit clinical and radiographic features suggestive of an odontogenic tumor or cyst as well as several other neoplastic conditions. Tooth mobility, displacement of teeth, and dramatic jaw expansion may be observed. Analogous to other sites of involvement, gnathic myofibromas are biologically indolent and show little or no recurrence following excision. In rare instances, however, the ability t

Telomere Shortening and p16-Associated Senescence in Myofibromas.

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to explore the biological mechanisms that may influence the development of myofibromas, noninvasive soft tissue tumors with a variable clinical course. Although solitary lesions are usually benign, multicentric infantile myofibromatosis can range from indolent disease with spontaneous regression to severe forms with visceral involvement and life-threatening complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed senescence markers, DNA damage, and telomere biology in 33 tumor samples from 28 patients with myofibroma, including both solitary and multicentric forms
