[Familial infantile myofibromatosis].

BACKGROUND: Infantile myofibromatosis (IM) is the most common fibrous disorder of infancy and childhood. It is characterized by congenital tumours of the skin, striated muscle, bones and viscera. Most cases are sporadic and few familial cases have been reported. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We describe a 5-month-old girl presenting with two congenital nodules. The diagnosis of infantile myofibromatosis was based on clinical and histopathological examination. Surgical excision was performed and there was no relapse at six years. The patient's brother presented multiple nodules and toe necrosis at bir

Myofibromatosis: imaging characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Infantile myofibromatosis is the most common fibrous tumor of infancy. It can involve the skin, muscle, bone, and viscera. This uncommon entity is subdivided into solitary and multicentric forms, with or without visceral involvement. OBJECTIVE: To describe the imaging characteristics of extracranial myofibromatosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six infants, aged 1 day-1 week, were evaluated by imaging. All six patients had evaluation of one of the masses by US; four patients had CT evaluation of at least one of the masses; and five patients had evaluation by MRI. RESULTS: The US appea

[Solitary infantile myofibromatosis of bone].

We report one case of Solitary infantile Myofibromatosis of Bone in a 14-year old girl. Radiologic features of the tibial lesion were consistent with the diagnosis of a benign bone tumor. The final diagnosis was made on a total resection of the tumor. Histologically, the tumor consisted of nodules, hyalinized or cellular, with spindle-shaped cells resembling fibroblasts or smooth-muscle cells. There were numerous vascular spaces in close contact with these nodules. The tumor cells were immunoreactive with anti-alpha-smooth muscle actin antibodies. These data were consistent with the diagnosis

Infantile myofibromatosis. A case report.

Infantile myofibromatosis is a rare mesenchymal disorder of infancy characterized by the formation of tumors in the skin, muscle, viscera, bone and subcutaneous tissue. The etiology of the disorder is unknown. We describe here a newborn with multiple infantile myofibromatosis, peritonitis and intestinal perforation. Surgery revealed multiple intestinal obstructions and jejunal perforation due to intestinal tumors; consequently, a jejunostomy was performed. The patient was maintained on total parenteral nutrition and oral semiliquid infant formula for two months, however, he died due to multipl

Intracranial solitary-type infantile myofibromatosis.

An unusual case of infantile myofibromatosis of the solitary type occurring in an intracranial location in a 48-day-old female infant is presented. To our knowledge, there are no other descriptions in the literature of infantile myofibromatosis with exclusively intracranial involvement. The immunohistochemical and electron microscopic findings confirm the myofibroblastic origin of the proliferation.

[Infantile myofibromatosis of the tongue - a case-report].

PATIENT: We report a case of infantile myofibromatosis of the tongue in a 5 month old female child. The parents reported discovering the tumor in the musculature of the tongue and the tumor had largely grown in size in the space of 4 weeks. The child's health was not impaired at any time. After a specimen was removed for a histological examination, an infantile myofibromatosis was diagnosed. DISCUSSION: The occurrence of these tumors in neonates and young children in the oral cavity and in particular in the tongue is rarely reported. Development of the benign tumor disease depends on the form

Infantile myofibromatosis: a rare presentation with intussusception.

Infantile myofibromatosis (IM) is a distinct but rare clinicopathological entity occurring in neonates and infants. It probably represents a rare soft-tissue tumour made up of undifferentiated myofibroblasts. Its recognition is important since it can be mistaken for a malignancy when, in fact, it has a generally benign prognosis with spontaneous regression. We describe the first case of an infant with IM presenting with acute intussusception due to gastrointestinal as well as the typical skin involvement.

Infantile myofibromatosis: Small bumps pose big problems.

BackgroundInfantile myofibromatosis (IM) is a disorder characterized by proliferation of benign myofibroblastic tumors that typically manifest as solitary or multiple nodules in the skin, muscle, bone, subcutaneous tissues, and visceral organs and can pose significant morbidity and mortality risks, particularly in cases involving visceral organs or causing functional impairment. These soft tissue lesions are the most prevalent benign fibrous tumors that present before age two and can undergo spontaneous regression or are amenable to surgical resection.CaseA preterm, male infant was born via Ca

Infantile myofibromatosis presenting with scalp dermoid cyst.

Infantile myofibromatosis is a disorder of infancy and early childhood, typically presenting as a solitary lesion or multiple widespread nodular tumors localized to skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle, bone, viscera, or central nervous system. We present a case of infantile myofibromatosis, multicentric type, in a 4-month-old male infant who initially presented with an occipital scalp mass and other skin-colored nodular mass lesions over his face, trunk, and four limbs. He received tissue biopsy to establish a definite diagnosis. Craniotomy was also arranged for tumor removal due to dural involv

Pneumothorax revealing late recurrence of infantile myofibromatosis.

Adult recurrence of infantile myofibromatosis is exceptional. Here, we report the case of a 23-year-old woman with a late recurrence of infantile myofibromatosis revealed by spontaneous pneumothorax. The chest computed tomography scan found both cavitary and nodular bilateral pulmonary lesions. In infancy, she had multicentric myofibromatosis with digestive, cutaneous, and bone involvement, spontaneously regressive before the age of 15 months. Histological analysis of lung samples showed identical findings as from the cutaneous biopsy performed in infancy, confirming the recurrence of infantil

Generalized infantile myofibromatosis with a monophasic primitive pattern.

Infantile myofibromatosis (IM) is a rare disorder present at birth or in early infancy with a biphasic histological pattern. We present a neonatal-onset case of generalized IM with visceral (central nervous system, heart, lungs, liver, spleen, small intestine, kidneys and bones) and placental involvement, showing a monophasic histological pattern through the lesions during the course of disease. Histologically, the tumor was composed of a solid proliferation of cytologically uniform, 'primitive' mesenchymal cells associated with a hemangiopericytoma-like vascular pattern. Immunohistochemical a

Oral myofibromatosis: an unusual cause of gingival overgrowth.

BACKGROUND: This case report describes a rare benign tumour, which presented as discrete areas of gingival hyperplasia affecting both the mandible and the maxilla. METHOD: Surgical excision of the lesions was carried out under local anaesthetic. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of oral myofibromatosis. RESULTS: The condition responded to surgical excision and appears to have limited growth potential. It affects a wide spectrum of ages and can be alarming due to rapid enlargement and ulceration, so careful diagnosis is important to avoid unnecessary aggressive treatment.

Chemotherapy for Generalized Infantile Myofibromatosis With Visceral Involvement.

Infantile myofibromatosis (IM) is most commonly limited to cutaneous lesions that resolve spontaneously. However, generalized IM with visceral involvement, which has a reported mortality rate as high as 73%, has been successfully treated with a combination of methotrexate and vinblastine. Here we report the further efficacy of low-dose methotrexate and vinblastine in 2 pediatric patients with IM and visceral involvement and review the literature describing chemotherapy for these patients.
