There is marked diversity in the reported success rates for achieving an intact tympanic membrane following myringoplasty. Controversy exists about the factors thought to influence surgical outcome. Both of these facts have important implications for obtaining informed consent prior to surgery. This study reviews the factors thought to determine the likelihood of achieving complete closure of the tympanic membrane following surgical closure.

The tympanic membrane allograft myringoplasty is used for the radical treatment of chronic middle ear disease and the repair of tympanic perforations which are sequellae of the chronic middle ear conditions. In the first part, basic principles, tissue bank and surgical procedures, are explained in detail. The second part shows that this technique ensures not only total eradication of the pathology, but is favoured by the specific morpho-, physio- and bio-compatibilities of the allograft.

Different materials were compared as implants in performing a myringoplasty on rats immediately after making a total perforation, (autologous fascia, homologous tympanic membrane, homologous collagen, heterologous collagen, heterologous amnion and proplast). As a reference one group of rats had no myringoplasty done after perforating their drums. The animals were examined regularly, then killed after 40 and 64 weeks. Macroscopically and microscopically proplast and homologous collagen were very inferior to homograft tympanic membrane and autologous fascia. The best results were obtained both m

BACKGROUND: Tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) may be caused by acute and chronic otitis media, trauma and iatrogenic reasons. The goal of myringoplasty is to achieve a dry, self-cleansing ear with intact TM while preserving hearing. Literature review of myringoplasty outcome demonstrates results with different success rates and affecting factors.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate TMP closure (TMPC) rate and hearing improvement and to assess the effect of clinical and surgical parameters on residual and recurrent perforation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart analys

Our 11 years of experience of myringoplasty in 87 children aged 3 to 14 years were retrospectively studied. The children were followed up over a period of 3 years. Children in the 3-to-12-year-old age group had a success rate of 57.7%. Graft-take rate was 100% in children operated on at the age of 13 and 14 years. Revision surgery was needed in 33 ears, and ultimate success was achieved in 88.9%. Within the same period, 38 ears were conservatively treated and 20 perforations of them were spontaneously closed. The state of the opposite ear and the perforation size were not a decisive factor in

Adipose myringoplasty is presented as a simple and cost-effective technique in managing small tympanic membrane perforations in children. A review of 76 fat plug myringoplasties performed on 62 children with drum perforations over a 15-year period was done. Fifty-nine myringoplasties were postinflammatory and/or after extrusion of pressure-equalizing (PE) tubes. Sixteen were residual perforations following temporalis fascia tympanoplasty, and one was posttraumatic perforation. Criteria for selection, operative technique, and results are discussed.

INTRODUCTION: Perforations of the tympanic membrane result mainly from otitis media or trauma, and we need grafting when a perforation is chronically persistent to prevent recurring infections and to enhance hearing. In the present study, we assessed the success rate, feasibility, and efficacy of endoscopic transcanal tympanoplasty using tragal cartilage grafts via the clip technique.
METHODS: This prospective study was performed between September 2017 and December 2021 and was conducted in ENT departments in tertiary hospitals. Forty patients underwent endoscopic clip technique tragal cartil

This retrospective study was undertaken to review the short- and long-term results of 70 revision and 16 re-revision myringoplasty operations. Of the former, 43 cases (61.4 per cent) had initial success, six weeks following surgery. The leading causes of immediate failure (27 cases) were associated with a complete no-take of the graft, infection with graft necrosis and poor anterior adaptation of the graft in decreasing order. Six out of the 43 patients developed late re-perforations during the follow-up period, thus reducing the success rate of revision myringoplasty to 52.8 per cent. Late re

INTRODUCTION: To date, myringoplasty conducted under the operating microscope has been found to have its limitations. With the introduction of the endoscope into other branches of surgery, there have been attempts at its utilisation in otology.
METHODS: Endoscope-assisted myringoplasty was carried out in 50 patients aged 18-45 years using the temporalis fascia graft. The middle ear was examined through perforation in order to exclude cholesteatoma.
RESULTS: The overall success rate of the graft uptake and improvement in conductive deafness as air-bone gap closure was achieved in 80 percent o

The role of the rigid endoscope has been evaluated in the management of 36 cases with dry central perforation of the tympanic membrane. The graft take rate was 91.7 per cent and the air-bone gap was closed to less than 10 dB in 83.3 per cent. The use of the rigid endoscope in the management of dry central perforation of the drum represented a significant advance in middle ear surgery. It is used, in correlation with manometry, to evaluate the tubal function before ear surgery and to treat hidden causes of tubal obstruction. It replaces the operating microscope in observation and surgery of the

UNLABELLED: Audit question: Does revision myringoplasty have worse outcomes than primary surgery?
METHODS: The International Otology Database has been used to record data on surgery for middle-ear disease in Norfolk, UK, over nine years. The data show the results of all myringoplasty cases and the results of revision cases. Outcome measures are perforation and hearing change. Comparison is made with benchmark centres of excellence.
RESULTS: A total of 611 operations included myringoplasty; 356 (58 per cent) of cases had a recorded follow up at 3 months. Twenty-nine patients (8.1 per cent) ha

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors that significantly influence myringoplasty success.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of all adults and children who underwent myringoplasty from January 2005 to January 2010 in a teaching hospital. Outcome measures were tympanic membrane perforation closure and air-bone gap closure to within 20 dB HL. The factors assessed were the surgeon grade, pre-operative condition of the ipsilateral and contralateral middle ears, perforation site, perforation size, graft material, and whether simultaneous cortical mastoidectomy was performed. Factors with statis

CONCLUSION: Based on the results of this study, it is believed that, in appropriate patients with tympanic membrane perforation, the endoscopic butterfly cartilage myringoplasty can be applied, with a shorter operation time, high graft success rate, and low risk of complications.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of the endoscopic butterfly cartilage myringoplasty in terms of the graft success rate and hearing gain.
METHODS: Forty-five ears of the 42 patients who were subjected to endoscopic butterfly cartilage myringoplasty surgery between January 2013 and Decembe

BACKGROUND: Myringoplasty is one of the various surgical techniques for the management of chronic supurative otitis media of tubotympanic type (CSOM-TT). The presence of a perforation of tympanic membrane with intermittent discharge and hearing loss of conductive nature are the indications of myringoplasty. It is a beneficial procedure done for closing tympanic membrane perforation and improving hearing.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess hearing improvement after myringoplasty within ten weeks following surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 50 patients

We report a retrospective study about 80 myringoplasties performed on 75 patients. The single occlusive myringoplasty technique was undergone in 33.7 percent of cases, while the tympanomeatal flap procedure was used in 66,2 percent. The grafted material was temporal muscle fascia (63.7%) or tragus perichondrium (36.2%). In 30 percent of instances some retouches were achieved on the ossicular chain. The anatomic success rate accounted for 67.5% and a good functional issues for 59.7% of cases.

The long-term results of myringoplasty in children, including closure of perforation and hearing improvement, were reviewed in relation to age, condition of the operated-on ear, and condition of the untreated ear. The overall success rate in 155 operations evaluated one year postoperatively was 79%. Children in the 5- to 8-year-old age group had a success rate comparable to that of older (9- to 12-year-old) children (77.7% vs 80.4%). Where graft failure occurred, it was usually within one year of surgery. The outcome of surgery could not be related to the presence or absence of chronic otitis
