Colleter diversity across Eugeniinae (Myrtaceae): morphology, occurrence and taxonomic implications.

Myrteae is a tribe that encompasses the majority of Neotropical Myrtaceae diversity, with the subtribe Eugeniinae being the most species-rich, including the genera Eugenia (1,243 spp.) and Myrcianthes (41 spp.). Morphologically, the group presents complex taxonomy, particularly in Eugenia, which is subdivided into 11 infrageneric sections. The search for new morphological characters is crucial for delimiting and identifying species and infrageneric groups. In this context, colleters (glandular structures involved in the protection of leaf and floral primordia) remain poorly explored. This stud

Topical anti-inflammatory activity of Eugenia brasiliensis Lam. (Myrtaceae) leaves.

Eugenia brasiliensis Lam., a plant from the south of Brazil, is used in the popular medicine for rheumatism treatment. This study reports that topical application of hydroalcoholic extract, fractions and isolated compounds from E. brasiliensis caused an inhibition of ear oedema in response to topical application of croton oil on the mouse ear. For oedema inhibition, the estimated ID50 values (dose reducing the inflammatory response by 50% relative to the control value) for hydroalcoholic extract and fractions (hexane, ethyl acetate and dichloromethane) were 0.17, 0.29, 0.13 and 0.14 mg/ear, re

Advances Towards Ex Situ Conservation of Critically Endangered Rhodomyrtus psidioides (Myrtaceae).

Rhodomyrtus psidioides (G.Don) Benth. (Myrtaceae) is a critically endangered rainforest species from the east coast of Australia, where populations have severely and rapidly declined due to the effects of repeated myrtle rust infection. With very limited material available in the wild and freezing-sensitive seeds that have prevented storage in a seed bank, ex situ conservation of this exceptional species has proven difficult. Material from a seed orchard grown at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan was successfully used to initiate three new accessions into tissue culture from cuttings,

Campomanesia adamantium (Myrtaceae) fruits protect HEPG2 cells against carbon tetrachloride-induced toxicity.

Campomanesia adamantium (Myrtaceae) is an antioxidant compounds-rich Brazilian fruit popularly known as gabiroba. In view of this, it was evaluated the hepatoprotective effects of pulp (GPE) or peel/seed (GPSE) hydroalcoholic extracts of gabiroba on injured liver-derived HepG2 cells by CCl4 (4 mM). The results showed the presence of total phenolic in GPSE was (60%) higher when compared to GPE, associated with interesting antioxidant activity using DPPH• assay. Additionally, HPLC chromatograms and thin layer chromatography of GPE and GPSE showed the presence of flavonoids. Pretreatment of HepG2

Inflorescence architecture and development in the megadiverse Eugenia (Myrteae, Myrtaceae): an evolutionary perspective.

This work explores inflorescence development patterns in Eugenia (Myrtaceae), one of the largest genera of woody plants with over 1200 species. The central hypothesis is that all variation in inflorescence arrangements in Eugenia is homologous. This is addressed as specific aims: (i) to identify the main inflorescence developmental patterns, (ii) to test the homology of inflorescence architectures using a time-calibrated phylogeny, and (iii) to assess and update traditional terminology. Taxonomically representative samples of Eugenia inflorescences were analysed to provide an evolutionary and

Herbarium-based measurements are reliable predictors of fresh plant traits in Neotropical Myrtaceae.

PREMISE: Herbarium specimens are increasingly used to extract morphological traits for ecological and evolutionary studies, yet the effects of tissue desiccation on trait measurements remain poorly understood. Here, we tested two hypotheses: (H1) whether higher tissue water content leads to greater measurement changes after herborization and (H2) whether fresh trait values can be reliably predicted from measurements of herborized specimens. METHODS: We evaluated the reliability of herbarium-based measurements by comparing fresh and dried traits of leaves, flowers, fleshy fruits, and seeds acr

Myrciaria tenella (DC.) O. Berg (Myrtaceae) Leaves as a Source of Antioxidant Compounds.

Myrciaria species are widely studied to identify their chemical composition and evaluate their biological activity. Since evidence supporting the potential antioxidant and antiproliferative activity of Myrciaria tenella is lacking, the aim of this work was to evaluate these activities in six different leaf extracts: hexane (CHE), chloroform (CCE), ethanolic (CEE), methanolic (CME), aqueous final (CFAE), and only aqueous (CAE). The presence of phenolic compounds, tannin, saponin, and ursolic acid was determined by thin layer chromatography (TLC). CEE, CME, and CFAE showed in vitro antioxidant a

The transcriptional landscape of insect galls: psyllid (Hemiptera) gall formation in Hawaiian Metrosideros polymorpha (Myrtaceae).

BACKGROUND: Recent studies show that galling Hymenoptera and Diptera are able to synthesize the plant hormone indole-3-acetic acid (auxin) from tryptophan and that plant response to insect-produced auxin is implicated in gall formation. We examined the leaf transcriptome of galled and ungalled leaves of individuals of the Hawaiian endemic plant Metrosideros polymorpha (Myrtaceae) subject to infestation by psyllid (Hemiptera) gall-makers in the genus Trioza (Triozidae). RESULTS: Transcript libraries were sequenced using Illumina technology and the reads assembled de novo into contigs. Function

Spasmolytic effect of Psidium guajava Linn. (Myrtaceae) leaf aqueous extract on rat isolated uterine horns.

Globally, primary dysmenorrhoea is one of the most frequent gynaecological disorders in young women. It is associated with increased uterine tone, and exaggerated contractility of uterine smooth muscles. In many rural African communities, a number of medicinal plants, including Psidium guajava Linn. (family: Myrtaceae), are used traditionally for the management, control and/or treatment of primary dysmenorrhoea. The present study was, therefore, undertaken to examine the spasmolytic effect of Psidium guajava leaf aqueous extract (PGE) on isolated, spontaneously-contracting and oestrogen-domina

Beneficial effects of anthocyanin-rich peels of Myrtaceae fruits on chemically-induced liver fibrosis and carcinogenesis in mice.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) arising from fibrosis/cirrhosis is the most common type of primary liver cancer. Conversely, a higher intake of fruits and vegetables might play a protective role in HCC risk. Recently, Myrtaceae family tropical fruits have raised great interest due to the high levels of anthocyanins especially in their peels, which are usually discarded upon consumption. Anthocyanins are antioxidant pigments known to have beneficial effects in vivo/in vitro cancer bioassays. Thus, we evaluated whether dietary Myrciaria jaboticaba, Syzygium cumini, and Syzygium malaccense fruit p
