Bioinsecticidal potential of Baeckea frutescens (Myrtales: Myrtaceae) essential oil: chemical variation, yeast encapsulation, and larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Plant essential oils are promising alternatives to synthetic larvicides, but their development is often limited by chemical variability, formulation challenges, and concerns regarding non-target toxicity. Baeckea frutescens, a widespread weed species, remains insufficiently characterized in terms of chemotypic diversity, stereochemical composition, and larvicidal selectivity. The essential oils were dominated by mono- and sesquiterpenoids, with p-cymene, 1,8-cineole, α- and β-pinene, α-humulene, caryophyllene oxide, and humulene epoxide II as major constituents. PCA and HCA revealed distinct c

Initial impacts and field validation of host range for Boreioglycaspis melaleucae Moore (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), a biological control agent of the invasive tree Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) Blake (Myrtales: Myrtaceae: Leptospermoideae).

Invasion of south Florida wetlands by the Australian paperbark tree, Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) S.T. Blake (melaleuca), has caused adverse economic and environmental impacts. The tree's biological attributes and favorable ambient biophysical conditions combine to complicate efforts to restore and maintain south Florida ecosystems. Management requires an integrated strategy that deploys multiple biological control agents to forestall reinvasion and to supplement other control methods, thereby lessening recruitment and regeneration after removal of existing trees. This biological control pro

Attraction or Repelling Effects of Commercial Plant Essential Oils on the Synanthropic Cheiracanthium mildei (Araneae: Cheiracanthiidae).

The northern yellow sac spider Cheiracanthium mildei L. Koch, is expanding its range to Central Europe, especially to synanthropic habitats. The spiders become unwanted companions because of the unreasonable fear - arachnophobia, and estetic reason - silk retreats in corners, capturing dust. The most commonly used substances against spiders are pesticides, which are, however, toxic. In our work we tested the attraction or repellence of 15 essential oils (EO) from plants representing eight families to C. mildei. Our research has shown a significant repellent effect of EO from three plants, name

JAK2 and AMP-kinase inhibition in vitro by food extracts, fractions and purified phytochemicals.

We have identified a range of food phytochemicals that inhibit Janus Kinase 2 (JAK2) and Adenosine Monophosphate Kinase (AMPK). A mutated and dysregulated form of JAK2, a tyrosine kinase, is associated with several diseases including Crohn's disease. Using an in vitro, time-resolved fluorescence (TR-FRET) assay, we tested 49 different types of food extracts, plus 10 concentrated fractions of increasing hydrophobicity from each extract, to find foods containing JAK2 inhibitors. The food extracts tested included grains, meat, fish, shellfish, dairy products, herbs, mushrooms, hops, fruits and ve

Beauveria bassiana (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae) Reduces the Survival Time of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae), the Main Vector of the Visceral Leishmaniasis Agent in the Americas.

Visceral leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) is a major neglected tropical disease and Brazil is the responsible for most cases reported in the Americas. In this region, L. infantum is primarily transmitted by Lutzomyia longipalpis and Migonemyia migonei (França) (Diptera: Psychodidae) is considered a permissive vector. We evaluated the susceptibility of Lu. longipalpis and Mg. migonei to Beauveria bassiana and to Eucalyptus globulus (Myrtales: Myrtaceae) essential oil. A spore suspension of B. bassiana was prepared and sand flies divided into five gr

Chemotactic responses and parasitism of Trichogramma pretiosum (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) influenced by sweet alyssum, essential oil of lemon eucalyptus, and host-plant components.

Parasitoids depend on chemical cues to locate and parasitize their hosts, and flowering plants and essential oils may enhance this process within conservation biological control (CBC) strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the chemotactic responses of Trichogramma pretiosum (Riley) (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) females and parasitism rates in the presence of components associated with a Brassica oleracea var. acephala (L.) cropping system: the flowering plant Lobularia maritima (L.) Fruit Preference, Parasitism, and Offspring Fitness of Fopius arisanus (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) Exposed to Bactrocera dorsalis' (Diptera: Tephritidae) Infested Fruit Species.

Fopius arisanus (Sonan) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a koinobiont solitary parasitoid of various fruit flies, particularly those in the genus Bactrocera. Researchers introduced F. arisanus into Africa for the biological control of Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), a pest of a wide range of fruit trees and vegetables. However, the suitability of host fruit species as egg-laying substrates for parasitoid development remains poorly investigated in tropical Africa. The present study examines the preference and performance of F. arisanus on B. dorsalis reared on eleven fruit spec

Shrubs and trees as natural insect protection for grazing animals in Switzerland and the alpine region: A systematic review of in vitro, in vivo and clinical trials.

Insect infestation in grazing animals is an increasing problem due to factors such as global warming and increasing resistance to insecticides, which have a direct impact on animal health and welfare. According to reports from farmers, observations in zoopharmacognosy and the ingredients of commercial insecticides, various indigenous trees and shrubs with an insecticidal or repellent effect grow or can be planted on pastures. The aim of our systematic review (designed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement) was to identify perenni

Physiology of crapemyrtle bark scale, Acanthococcus lagerstroemiae (Kuwana), associated with seasonally altered cold tolerance.

Temperature is one of the most important abiotic factors influencing the adaptation and diversification of insects. Diverse and complex physiological mechanisms have evolved to help insects adapt to seasonal changes in temperature and prevent cold injury. Although the mechanisms of seasonal adaptation to low temperatures have been studied for insects in different taxa, none of these mechanisms have been investigated in scale insects in the superfamily Coccoidea. The crapemyrtle bark scale, Acanthococcus lagerstroemiae (Kuwana) (Hemiptera: Eriococcidae), is a newly introduced scale pest of crap

A novel Cryphonectria species (Cryphonectriaceae, Diaporthales) discovered on Eucalyptus, including insights into the mating biology of the genus.

The Cryphonectriaceae (Diaporthales, Ascomycota) accommodates numerous important fungal pathogens that cause branch and stem canker diseases on woody plants worldwide. These include, for example, Cryphonectria (Cry.) parasitica, the causal agent of chestnut blight, which caused the near eradication of the American chestnut (Castanea dentata) in North America. The profound ecological and economic impact of Cry. parasitica has prompted considerable research interest in the diversity, biology, and pathogenicity of other species in the Cryphonectriaceae globally. Oecophylla smaragdina (Hymenoptera: Formicidae): a biological control agent of the invasive behaving bagworms Metisa plana (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) in oil palm plantations.

The invasive behaving bagworm Metisa plana Walker (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) is the dominant pest defoliator of oil palm canopies, leading to substantial leaf damage and monthly yield losses exceeding 45% in Malaysia. Standard control methods involve trunk chemical injection (TCI) and spraying of highly toxic pesticides (such as cypermethrin), which affect non-target species. We hypothesized that the introduction of a native biological control agent (BCA), the Asian weaver ant (Oecophylla smaragdina F.) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) would outperform the TCI in terms of scale and revenue consistency
