Bioactivity-guided fractionation of a dichloromethane extract of the leaves of Myrtus communis led to the isolation of phloroglucinol derivatives. The structures of the new myrtucommulones J, K, and L (1-3) and the previously known myrtucommulone A (4) were elucidated on the basis of extensive 1D and 2D NMR experiments as well as high-resolutionmass spectrometry. Myrtucommulone J was obtained as a tautomeric pair (1/1a). The compounds were tested in vitro for their cytotoxic and antibacterial activities.

Myrtus communis has anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and anticholinesterase activities yet there have been limited studies examining effects of Myrtus communis on cognitive functions. This study investigated the possible effects of Myrtus communis on changes in the cognitive functions of experimental renovascular hypertensive rats. Fifty-six Wistar-Albino rats were equally divided into 4 groups; sham-operated control, renovascular hypertension (RVH), ramipril (RVH + Ram) and Myrtus communis extract (RVH + MC) treatment groups. Goldblatt's 2-kidney 1-clip (2K1C) method was used to induce RVH.

Our continuation on the bio-assay guided isolation from Myrtus communis Linn. led to the discovery of a new dibezofuran type phloroglucinol 1,1'-(1,3,7,9-tetrahydroxydibenzo[b,d]furan-2,8-diyl)bis(ethan-1-one) 1. The structure was established through detailed spectroscopic studies including one and two dimensional NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization high resolution mass spectrometer (ESI-HRMS). The crude acetone extract from M. communis (AMA), dichloromethane fraction (DCM), and the isolated pure compound 1 were tested against pathogenic bacteria. Compound 1 displayed higher antibacte

Myrtucommulone (MC), a nonprenylated acylphloroglucinol contained in the leaves of myrtle (Myrtus communis), has been reported to suppress the biosynthesis of eicosanoids by inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase-1 in vitro and to inhibit the release of elastase and the formation of reactive oxygen species in activated polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Here, in view of the ability of MC to suppress typical proinflammatory cellular responses in vitro, we have investigated the effects of MC in in vivo models of inflammation. MC was administered to mice intraperitoneally, and paw edema and p
