Accumulation, Metabolism, and Depuration of Organotin Compounds in the Marine Mussels Mytilus graynus and Mytilus edulis under Natural Conditions.

The accumulation, transformation, and depuration of tri-n-butyltin (TBT) were studied over periods of approximately 60-70 days using marine mussels, Mytilus graynus and Mytilus edulis, under natural conditions. M. graynus collected at a lightly polluted site were transplanted to a highly polluted site and M. edulis collected at a highly polluted site were transplanted to a lightly polluted site. TBT taken up in M. graynus showed a bioconcentration factor of 10 500 in the accumulation phase. Di-n-butyl(3-oxobutyl)tin, which is a main metabolite of TBT in M. edulis, showed a longer half-life (8.

Toxoplasma gondii and Other Zoonotic Protozoans in Mediterranean Mussel ( Mytilus galloprovincialis) and Blue Mussel ( Mytilus edulis): A Food Safety Concern?

Mediterranean mussels ( Mytilus galloprovincialis) and blue mussels ( Mytilus edulis) are among the most consumed fishery products, but they are frequent vehicles of foodborne infection worldwide. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and seasonality of zoonotic protozoans in mussels farmed or sold at retail outlets in Italy. We collected and tested 1,440 M. galloprovincialis and 180 M. edulis. Pooled samples were molecularly tested for Giardia duodenalis, Cryptosporidium spp., and Toxoplasma gondii and then sequenced. Sixty-two (45.9%; 95% confidence interval, 37.5 to 54.3%) mussel po

Elastomer leachates modulate haemocytes responses in Mytilus edulis.

Rubber pollution is widespread in aquatic environments, where hazardous additives used in manufacturing pose serious risks to aquatic life. Both natural and synthetic rubbers undergo vulcanization, incorporating stabilizers to enhance durability and elasticity, alongside additives like antioxidants, antimicrobials, cross-linking agents and pigments. These substances, not chemically bound to the rubber polymer matrix, can leach into aquatic systems and interact with biota. Thus, this study investigated the ecotoxicological effects of rubber leachates from commercial products, specifically ballo

Heat shock induced ultrastructural alterations in Stylonychia mytilus cells.

Fine structural observations on heat shocked cells of S. mytilus reveal that cell organelles undergo structural alterations. Mitochondria show distorted shapes with disorganized cristae and vacuolar spaces. Pulse heat shock results in dilated rough endoplasmic reticulum, abundant polysomes as well as smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Heat shocked cells show membrane bound bodies containing osmiophilic cores. In macronuclei, dense chromatin breaks up into discrete bodies accompanied by the appearance of bundles of fine filaments and clustering of nuclear pores. The most prominent changes are notice

Chlorpromazine's impact on Mytilus galloprovincialis: a multi-faceted investigation.

The antipsychotic chlorpromazine (Cpz) has raised concern as a pharmaceutical effluent due to its wide medical applications. Moreover, its potent pro-oxidant properties and impact on the cell viability of the marine mollusc Mytilus galloprovincialis, even at low concentrations (ng/L), have been noted. Based on this evidence, in this study, we investigated the physiological effects of Cpz on M. galloprovincialis, to elucidate its fate within the organism, in terms of bioaccumulation, biotransformation, byssus changes and stress responses of the cellular thiolome. Histological and indicators of

Effect of Temperature on Immunocompetence of the Blue Mussel (Mytilus Edulis).

The blue mussel is a filter-feeding bivalve commonly used in ecotoxicological monitoring as a sentinel species. Due to climate change and the increase of temperature expected in marine environment, it is important to anticipate potential impacts on this species. The aim of this study was to investigate the immunocompetence of blue mussels acclimated to different temperatures and on the effects of increasing temperatures (5, 10 and 20°C). Different indices and gonad maturation stages were also determined throughout the experiments. Cell viability, phagocytosis, serum lysozyme activity and cyclo

Oxidative stress and toxicity of gold nanoparticles in Mytilus edulis.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNP) have potential applications in drug delivery, cancer diagnosis and therapy, food industry and environment remediation. However, little is known about their potential toxicity or fate in the environment. Mytilus edulis was exposed in tanks to 750 ppb AuNP (average diameter 5.3 ± 1 nm) for 24h to study in vivo biological effects of nanoparticles. Traditional biomarkers and an affinity procedure selective for thiol-containing proteins followed by two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) separations were used to study toxicity and oxidative stress responses. Results were com

Recombinant expression of a novel Mytilus defensin in Pichia pastoris.

Mytilus contain abundant antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that play a key role in the innate immunity. However, heterologous production of these AMPs remains challenging due to their short sequences, multiple disulfide bonds, and high content of cationic amino acids, which hinder functional expression in prokaryotic systems such as Escherichiacoli. To establish a eukaryotic recombinant expression system for the AMPs of mussel and obtain recombinant mussel AMPs for subsequent studies, we reported the successful recombinant expression of myticofensin-B1, a novel defensin-like AMP identified previous

Histopathology of mussels (Mytilus sp.) from the Tamar estuary, UK.

This study assessed numerous histological parameters as markers of health status in mussels (Mytilus spp.) collected from several locations along a contamination gradient on the River Tamar and two coastal sites on the north and south coast of Cornwall, UK. Twenty-seven health parameters were assessed including the presence of pathogens, inflammatory lesions, non-specific pathologies and reproductive condition. Logistic regression showed that reproductive condition and inflammatory lesions showed changes indicative of a contamination gradient response. Mussel populations further upstream withi

Ecotoxicological effects of lanthanum in Mytilus galloprovincialis: Biochemical and histopathological impacts.

Inappropriate processing and disposal of electronic waste contributes to the contamination of aquatic systems by various types of pollutants such as the rare-earth elements (REE) in which lanthanum (La) is included. Knowledge on the toxicity of these elements in marine organisms is still scarce when compared to other metals such as mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As). Therefore, this study aims to assess the toxicity of La on the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, considered a good bioindicator of aquatic pollution, through the analysis of metabolic, oxidative stress, neurotoxicity and histopathologi

Numerical evaluation of bioaccumulation and depuration kinetics of PAHs in Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are important organic pollutants in the aquatic environment due to their persistence and bioaccumulation potential both in organisms and in sediments. Benzo(a)anthracene (BaA) and phenanthrene (PHE), which are in the priority pollutant list of the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), are selected as model compounds of the present study. Bioaccumulation and depuration experiments with local Mediterranean mussel species, Mytilus galloprovincialis were used as the basis of the study. Mussels were selected as bioindicator organisms due to their broad

Immunomodulation in Mytilus galloprovincialis by non-toxic doses of hexavalent chromium.

In aquatic organisms, the immune function can be affected by exposure to environmental pollutants, including heavy metals. In vertebrate systems, different forms of Cr have been shown induce either immunostimulatory or immunosuppressive processes. Hexavalent Cr, Cr(VI), is an important contaminant released from both domestic and industrial effluents, and the predominant chemical form of the metal in aquatic ecosystems. In this work, the in vitro and in vivo effects of Cr(VI) on immune parameters of the marine bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis were evaluated. Hemocyte incubation with different

Glucose release in mantle tissue of Mytilus: regulation by calcium ions.

Glucose release activity in mantle tissue of Mytilus galloprovincialis was studied. Mantle tissue shows a basal glucose releasing activity. The external Ca2+ absence increases 2 to 3-fold the basal glucose release, and when A23187 (10 microM) was simultaneously present the release doubled that obtained in Ca2(+)-absence. EGTA (2 mM), chlorpromazine (200 microM) and lanthanum (3 mM) decreased the glucose release promoted by external Ca2+ absence. This and other data suggest that glucose release activity in mantle tissue might be controlled by Ca2+ ions.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics impair sperm quality in the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Spermatozoa represent one of the most sensitive stages of the life cycle in broadcast spawners, as they are directly released into the water column and immediately exposed to environmental contaminants. Among contaminants of emerging concern, fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs) such as enrofloxacin (ENR) and its metabolite ciprofloxacin (CIP) are increasingly detected in coastal waters, yet their direct effects on gametes remain largely unexplored. In this study, sperm from Mytilus galloprovincialis were exposed in vitro to environmentally relevant concentrations of ENR and CIP (5 and 500 ng/L).

Microalgae Parasite Diseases of Mytilus galloprovincialis: Infections, Immunology and Antioxidant Defense.

Coccomyxa parasitica-like algae pose a growing threat to bivalve aquaculture. In this work, for the first time under controlled conditions, the effect of the green parasitic microalgae of genus Coccomyxa sp. in the Sea of Japan on the immune and antioxidant protection of Mytilus galloprovincialis was studied in two ways of infection-through filtration (with feed) and injection (into an adductor). By day 7, mortality in both experimental groups reached 68%. The phagocytic activity of hemocytes significantly decreased in the feed group, which may be due to the masking of the parasite as a food p

Oil uptake via marine snow: Effects on blue mussels (Mytilus sp.).

Accidental oil spills into the ocean can lead to downward transport and settling of oil onto the seafloor as part of marine snow, as seen during the Deepwater Horizon incident in 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. The arctic and subarctic regions may favor conditions leading to this benthic oil deposition, prompting questions about the potential impacts on benthic communities. This study investigated the effects of oil-contaminated marine snow uptake on the blue mussel (Mytilus sp.). We exposed mussels for four days to 1) oil-contaminated marine snow (MOS treatment), or to 2) chemically-enhanced wate

Calcium trafficking in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis suggests conserved biomineralization pathways.

Vesicles play a key role in biomineralization pathways by mediating ion concentration and transport while maintaining cellular homeostasis. Whereas calcium-loaded vesicles have been extensively studied in organisms such as coccolithophores and vertebrates, comparatively little is known about those involved in mollusc shell mineralization. Using electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), we analyzed the ultrastructure and composition of three vesicle types predominant near the shell's growth surface in cryofixed juvenile Mytilus galloprovincialis: bilayered vesicles, ribo
