Journal of veterinary diagnostic investigation : official publication of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, Inc2012eng
Myxobolus albi was diagnosed in the cartilage of captive lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) from 2 public aquaria. Eleven fish were affected, with the most common clinical signs being exophthalmos and grossly visible 1- to 2-mm white to tan scleral nodules. Myxozoan cysts were identified in the cartilage of the skull, branchial arch, sclera, vertebrae, tongue, all fin insertions, and the pectoral girdle. Cysts resulted in expansile, deforming, space-occupying lesions, resulting in exophthalmos but often lacking significant tissue damage or inflammation. Once cysts ruptured, free spores elicited a m

Myxozoans are economically important cnidarian endoparasites. Members of this group have been traditionally characterized by a morphology-based taxonomic system. Because myxozoans possess few morphological characters, these data are routinely accompanied by biological traits (host/organ/tissue specificity) and molecular data when describing or identifying myxozoan species. In the present study, a species of Myxobolus was collected from the fins of yellow catfish Tachysurus fulvidraco Richardson, 1846, which was consistent in spore morphology and host/organ specificity with Chinese records of M

Myxobolus 'aeglefini' Auerbach, 1906 was originally described from cranial cartilage of North sea haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), but has subsequently been recorded from cartilaginous tissues of a range of other gadoid hosts, from pleuronectids and from lumpsucker (Cyclopterus lumpus) in the North Atlantic and from a zoarcid fish in the Japan Sea (Pacific). We obtained partial small-subunit rDNA sequences of Myxobolus 'aeglefini' from gadoids and pleuronectids from Norway and Iceland. The sequences from gadoids and pleuronectids represented two different genotypes, showing 98.2% identity.

The genus Myxobolus, belonging to the class Myxozoa, is a cnidarian genus characterized by ellipsoidal or rounded myxospores with two polar capsules located in the anterior sutural plane, commonly without caudal projections. However, diverse morphologies have been described in recent studies of myxospores, exhibiting various appendage forms. The present study describes the morphological and molecular characteristics of a new species of Myxobolus in the red piranha Pygocentrus nattereri. In 16 % (3/18) of the fish specimens captured in Lake Sacaizal, Amapá State, whitish cysts containing ovoid

Samples of Myxobolus lentisuturalis were found in the gallbladder of Carassius auratus in Chongqing, China, without obvious disease symptoms, which were different from samples reported in Hubei, China, and Italy which were described as highly pathogenic muscle-infecting species. In order to improve our understanding of the relationships between these different samples, we analyzed geography, DNA sequence data, and site specificity. The results indicated that (1) the genetic relationship between Chongqing and Italy samples of M. lentisuturalis was much closer than relationship between each of t

The mapará (Hypophthalmus marginatus) is a commercially important fish in the Brazilian Amazon and has been described as a host for numerous myxosporid species. The integrated taxonomy of a new species, Myxobolus mickeyii n. sp., discovered in the urinary bladder of H. marginatus, is undertaken in this study. In 105 specimens of H. marginatus, plasmodia and myxospores were observed in the urinary bladder fluid, the myxospores measuring 20.5 (19.6-21.3) μm in length and 14.0 (13.2-14.9) μm in width. The posterior valves of the spore body were thick, with valvulogenic nuclei, endoplasmic reticul

Myxobolus lentisuturalis is a myxozoan parasite of piscine muscle that has been described in goldfish Carassius auratus and Prussian carp Carassius gibelio. This report documents a naturally occurring infection of M. lentisuturalis in a population of farmed goldfish in the USA. Postmortem examination was performed on 4 affected goldfish. Gross findings included large cystic cavities along the dorsal midline filled with caseous exudate. Histopathology revealed myxozoan plasmodia and spores in the epaxial muscles with varying degrees of granulomatous and necrotizing myositis accompanied by lymph

Salmonids are affected by the economically significant whirling disease (WD) caused by the myxozoan parasite Myxobolus cerebralis. In the past, it was endemic to Eurasia, but it has now spread to different regions of North America, Europe, New Zealand, and South Africa. Among salmonids, rainbow trout is considered the most highly susceptible host. Upon entering to the host's body, the parasite invades the spine and cranium, resulting in whirling behaviour, a blackened tail, and destruction of cartilage. The disease is characterized by the infiltration of numerous inflammatory cells, primarily

BACKGROUND: Myxozoan parasites pose emerging health issues for wild and farmed salmonid fish. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a particularly susceptible species to Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (Malacosporea), the etiological agent of Proliferative Kidney Disease (PKD), and to Myxobolus cerebralis (Myxosporea), the etiological agent of Whirling Disease (WD). The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of myxozoan co-infections on the pathogenesis of PKD and WD in the rainbow trout.
METHODS: Two groups of rainbow trout (96 fish each) were primarily infected with T. bryosal

Six myxosporidian species were found in chub (Leuciscus cephalus) originating from Lower Austrian rivers. The frequency of the parasites and their localization was recorded. In all chub, independent of size and origin, Myxobolus cyprini occurred predominantly in the macrophage centres (MCs) of the haematopoietic organs, spleen and kidney. Exclusively in the head kidney of young fish not yet described vermicular plasmodia containing spores of M. cyprini were found. In muscle tissue the prevalence of M. cyprini was comparatively low. Other species of Myxobolus characterized by plasmodial cysts f

Myxobolus cerebralis (Mc) is a myxozoan parasite causing whirling disease in hatchery- and natural-origin salmonids. To minimize spread of this parasite and the incidence of its associated disease, fish health professionals routinely screen fish for Mc before stocking or moving the fish to Mc-free waters. Sample collection for Mc traditionally entails lethal sampling of cranial tissue followed by pepsin-trypsin digest (PTD) and screening of the sample for mature myxobolid myxospores (PTD method); however, nonlethal sampling methods would be advantageous in some circumstances, such as when deal

Thinlip mullet Chelon ramada is the most abundant mullet species found in the Comacchio lagoons (northern Adriatic Sea, Italy). Histological and ultrastructural sections of the intestine of C. ramada showed that over 83% of 48 mullets were infected with the intestinal parasite Myxobolus mugchelo (Myxozoa). In histological sections, plasmodia of M. mugchelo containing mature spores were situated closer to mucosal folds and were surrounded by numerous mast cells (MCs). Mature spores, generally oval in shape, were observed in the paracellular space among the enterocytes or within them. Near the i

Spinal deformities in finfish have the potential to impact aquaculture industries and wild populations by increasing morbidity, mortality, and reducing growth rates. Myxobolus acanthogobii has been implicated in causing scoliosis and lordosis in various aquatic species in Japan. We investigated 4 cases of spinal deformity in 2 flathead (Platycephalus) species that were submitted to the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute (EMAI) in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, between 2015 and 2021. Flathead are commercially significant species that are popular among Australian consumers, and are al

During an ongoing systematic survey on species diversity of myxozoans parasitising allogynogenetic gibel carp Carassius auratus gibelio (Bloch) in China, plasmodia were detected in the fins, lip, jaw, gill chamber, gill arches, operculum and oral cavity of infected fish. Combining the morphological and molecular data, the present species was identified as Myxobolus turpisrotundus Zhang, Wang, Li et Gong, 2010. Histopathological examination revealed that despite infecting different organs, M. turpisrotundus always occurred in dermis, demonstrating its affinity to this tissue. Histopathological
