A 3-year-old Labrador retriever dog was presented with pyrexia, dyspnoea and tachycardia. A pleural effusion was detected radiographically and ultrasonography showed pleural fluid with floating material. The fluid was drained, revealing a soft tissue mass adjacent to the left ventricle. The aspirated fluid had a proteinaceous and gelatinous appearance. Cytological examination revealed atypical mesenchymal cells in a dense eosinophilic background, interpreted as consistent with the presence of a matrix-secreting tumour, probably a myxosarcoma. Thoracoscopy confirmed the presence of the mass adj

This is a detailed clinical and autopsy documentation of a rare entity--primary cardiac myxosarcoma in a 29-month-old girl. The patient had sudden onset of right hemiplegia and angiographic evidence of multiple occlusions of the left middle cerebral artery. Subsequent M-mode and sector echocardiography showed a mobile, pedunculated left atrial tumor, which was excised. No other tumor mass was noted at the time of surgical exploration, and postoperatively, the patient received a course of chemotherapy (vincristine, dactinomycin, and cyclophosphamide). After a temporary improvement in her condit

A 22-y-old Quarter Horse gelding was presented to the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital for evaluation of increased heart rate and mild colic signs. Rectal examination revealed a large left perirenal mass. Abdominal ultrasonography further confirmed this finding. Thoracic ultrasonography indicated multifocal irregularities on the pleural surface suggestive of consolidation and possibly masses in the lungs. The animal was euthanized. Autopsy findings included a large, firm, expansile, gelatinous retroperitoneal mass that surrounded both kidneys, as well as nodules with similar

The pathological findings in a 13-year-old dog with cutaneous myxosarcoma with pulmonary metastases are described. Grossly, there was a large subcutaneous mass in the right scapular region, a smaller nodule in the caudal abdominal region and a fibrotic mass at a fracture site in the right hindlimb. Radiographic examination revealed several pulmonary nodules. Microscopical evaluation revealed a myxosarcoma characterized by the proliferation of spindle to stellate cells with multiple prominent nucleoli and vascular invasion. The neoplastic cells were haphazardly arranged in a mucopolysaccharide

Background Primary cardiac tumors are uncommon, with an incidence rate ranging from 0.001‰ to 0.3‰. Among cardiac tumors, 75% are benign and 25% are malignant. Approximately 50% of benign cardiac tumors are myxomas, while 75% of malignant cardiac tumors are sarcomas. Compared with myxomas, malignant cardiac tumors have a poorer prognosis. Cardiac myxosarcomas often have an insidious onset in young and middle-aged patients, with an overall survival period of 6 to 12 months. Similar to soft tissue tumors, cardiac sarcomas also consist of a range of histological subtypes. Among these, cardiac myx

Case of the 47-year-old man, clinically suffering from recurrent dyspnoea, cough, syncopes, haemoptysis, unsuccessfully treated with anticoagulant and fibrinolytic agents, is described. Large masses of a tumour, occupying nearly the whole lumen of pulmonary artery and extending to peripheral branches, were removed during surgery. The tumour was histologically and immunohistochemically classified as myxosarcoma. Following surgery, the patient was asymptomatic, could do his original job (lorry-driver) for the next 14 months. He died 20 months after surgery, showing symptoms and signs of progress

Myxosarcoma is a rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm of soft tissues originating from fibroblasts. This report describes a case of bilateral myxosarcoma in a three-year-old cryptorchid dog. The animal was referred to the veterinary clinic because of the absence of testicles in the scrotum. Ultrasonography revealed two masses in the abdominal cavity with testicular echotexture. Exploratory laparotomy revealed the presence of cryptorchid testicles, and orchiectomy was recommended to treat the animal. Testicles were gray and reddish in color and enlarged with firm consistency. For histopathologic

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2008eng
Myxomas and myxosarcomas are infiltrative connective tissue tumors of fibroblastic origin that can be distinguished by the presence of abundant mucinous stroma. This paper describes the clinical and imaging features of orbital myxosarcoma in five dogs and suggests a predilection for the orbit. The main clinical signs were slowly progressive exophthalmos with soft swelling of the pterygopalatine fossa, and in two dogs, of the periorbital area. No pain was associated with the eye or orbit but one dog had pain on opening the mouth. The dogs were imaged using combinations of ultrasonography, radio

A centrally located maxillary myxoma with malignant histologic appearance and aggressive clinical course is reported in a 40-yr-old man. The gelatinous polypoid tumor mass was diagnosed as a myxoma in the first biopsy. The tumor recurred rapidly (within 3 wk) eroding the bony structures of the maxillary sinus and the hard palate and infiltrating the adjacent soft tissues. In repeated biopsy (as well as reassessment of the first biopsy) the tumor was found to be composed of plump stellate cells, some of which were pleomorphic with atypical and bizarre mitotic figures. The amorphic myxoid matrix

Primary cardiac myxosarcoma is a rare disease; it is exceedingly rare for symptoms of systemic metastasis to precede diagnosis of the primary cardiac tumor. We describe the case of a previously healthy 60-year-old man with left atrial myxosarcoma, who had first presented with jejunal intussusception due to intestinal polyposis. Three months after resection of the jejunum, the patient experienced cerebral infarction and pulmonary edema. Further physical evaluation, which included echocardiography for the 1st time, revealed a mass in the left atrium that protruded through the mitral valve into t

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and pathological characteristics of a neoformation suggestive of myxosarcoma in a cat's eyelid.
ANIMAL STUDIED: An 11-year-old mixed-breed castrated female cat presented with a nodule on the lower eyelid approximately 1.6 cm in diameter, multilobulated, non-ulcerated, soft, and adhered to both the skin and conjunctiva of the lower eyelid.
PROCEDURES: The incisional biopsy revealed findings suggestive of a peripheral nerve sheath tumor. After performing an exenteration of the right eyeball to ensure a safe surgical margin, the tissue samples were sent for h

A 12-year-old, 3 kg spayed female mixed-breed dog was evaluated to assess a 1-year history of intermittent right forelimb lameness that did not have adequate response to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The radiographic study performed under sedation showed multifocal radiolucent areas affecting both the right humerus and scapula with focal soft tissue swelling; a CT scan confirmed the existence of an aggressive and invasive soft tissue mass affecting the scapulohumeral joint. Fine needle aspiration results suggested a low-grade synovial sarcoma and therefore a scapulectomy was performed.

An 8-year-old female spayed German Shepherd cross was presented for acute onset of respiratory distress. Four days before presentation, the owner noticed a reduced appetite and reluctance to move. Clinical examination identified muffled lung sounds and a left base, diamond-shaped systolic murmur graded 4/6. Echocardiography identified pleural and pericardial effusion, ascites and a myxoid mass (39 mm/18.9 mm) obstructing the right ventricular outflow tract and interfering with the pulmonary valve function. Given the poor prognosis, the dog was euthanatised, and a postmortem examination was per

A 1-year and 4-month-old neutered male shar-pei dog was brought to the emergency department for evaluation of pericardial effusion and a suspected cardiac mass. The presence of a mass with adhesions to the pericardium, right auricle, and right vzentricle was confirmed through computed tomography, thoracic radiography, and echocardiography. The mass was surgically excised and diagnosed through histopathology as a myxoma or low-grade myxosarcoma with mineralization and osseous metaplasia. This case report describes the diagnostic tests completed, the surgical excision, and the outcomes of a rare

CASE SUMMARY: A 10-year-old, castrated male domestic shorthair cat presented with stertor and severe respiratory distress caused by intratracheal masses occluding the majority of the tracheal lumen. Conventional endoscopic forceps biopsy yielded small tissue fragments, which were insufficient for a definitive histopathological diagnosis. Given the perceived high risk of tracheal resection and anastomosis, bronchoscopic cryotherapy with a 1.1 mm, flexible cryoprobe was performed for cryobiopsy and cryo-debulking. The masses occluded 80-90% of the lumen and were completely removed with cryothera
