Enteromyxum leei, an intestinal myxozoan parasite affecting a wide range of fish, was partially purified, and the immunogenic composition of its glycoproteins as well as the proteolytic activity were studied. Parasite extracts, mainly containing spores, were separated by SDS-PAGE, and thereafter, immunoblots were carried out with a polyclonal antiserum (Pab) raised against E. leei. Periodic acid/Schiff staining of gels, periodate- and Proteinase K-treated Western blots and Lectin blots were performed to analyse the terminal carbohydrate composition of the parasite's antigens. Additionally, the

Myxosporeans are a diverse group of cnidarian endoparasites of aquatic animals, with more than 2600 described species. The genus Ceratomyxa includes some 270 species that are mostly coelozoic and infect the gall bladders of mainly marine fish. During our survey in Tapajós River in the Brazilian Amazon, two Ceratomyxa species were discovered in the gallbladders of the anostomid fishes Schyzodon fasciatus and Schyzodon vittatus. Based on myxospore morphology and sequencing of small subunit ribosomal DNA, we propose that these are novel Ceratomyxa species. Ceratomyxa deformis n. sp. from S. fasci

Parasites are important organisms for the health of ecosystems. While the Amazon Basin is home to a great diversity of ichthyofauna, our knowledge of myxozoan diversity in the biome remains relatively limited. The present study describes a new myxozoan species, Ceratomyxa mandii n. sp., parasitizing the gallbladder of the Amazonian catfish Pimelodina flavipinnis (Pimelodidae) from the Solimões River, in the region of Manaus, Brazil. Light and electron microscopy, small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) sequencing and phylogenetic analysis were performed. The new species exhibited worm-like pla

The genus Myxobolus, belonging to the class Myxozoa, is a cnidarian genus characterized by ellipsoidal or rounded myxospores with two polar capsules located in the anterior sutural plane, commonly without caudal projections. However, diverse morphologies have been described in recent studies of myxospores, exhibiting various appendage forms. The present study describes the morphological and molecular characteristics of a new species of Myxobolus in the red piranha Pygocentrus nattereri. In 16 % (3/18) of the fish specimens captured in Lake Sacaizal, Amapá State, whitish cysts containing ovoid

Metazoans with worm-like morphologies across diverse and disparate groups typically demonstrate motility generated by hydrostatic skeletons involving tissue layers (muscles and epithelia). Here we present representative morphological, behavioural and molecular data for parasitic cnidarians (myxozoans) that demonstrate unprecedented variation in form and function, developing as cellular hydrostats. Motile elongate plasmodia characterise a remarkable radiation of species in the genus Ceratomyxa. The vermiform plasmodia inhabit gall bladders of a range of South American freshwater fish and exhibi

Light microscopical description is presented for a new myxozoan species, Henneguya ghaffari, which infects the Nile perch Lates niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) in Lake Wadi El-Raiyan in Egypt. The spore is characterized by a triangular thickening at the base of the caudal processes. The relatively long caudal processes run adherent to each other for two-thirds of their length, then bifurcate to very fine processes. Prevalence of infection was 34.6% and peaked during winter and early spring. The infection was concentrated along the intestinal tract, and in severe cases gills and gill rakers were als

An epidemiological cohort study of Enteromyxum scophthalmi in cultured turbot was performed on a farm in North Western Spain. Four different ongrowing stocks (A, B, C, D) were monitored monthly until market size. Fish from stocks C and D were divided into 2 subgroups, receiving filtered (CF and DF) or unfiltered (CUF and DUF) water. The lack of water filtration was positively associated with infection prevalence, as all fish kept in filtered water remained uninfected. Parasite abundance varied seasonally (P<0.05) in stock B and subgroup CUF. Infection was also associated (P<0.05) with host wei

The red piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri) is a carnivorous fish of significant ecological and economic value, widely distributed across tropical and neotropical regions of South America, particularly within the Amazon basin. This study investigated the presence of Myxobolus sp. infection in the ovaries of red piranhas collected in the municipality of Pracuúba, in the state of Amapá, Brazil. During necropsy, whitish cysts suggestive of parasitic infection were observed. Microscopic examination revealed spores with morphological characteristics consistent with Myxobolus sp., predominantly located

Although species of the genus Ceratomyxa Thélohan, 1892 mostly parasitize marine fish around the world, a surprising diversity of the genus has recently been reported from Amazonian freshwater fish. In this study, we report a freshwater Ceratomyxa species parasitizing Hemiodus orthonops (Hemiodontidae) from the Paraná River (La Plata Basin) in a watershed flowing into the southern part of South America, which expands the geographic distribution of this fish parasite in the freshwater resources of the continent. We applied a combination of morphological, small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA),

Myxozoans belonging to the genus Ellipsomyxa have been described in the gallbladders of fish from marine, brackish, and freshwater environments worldwide. Recent research suggests substantial speciation in South America freshwater environments. This study enhances our understanding of the diversity of freshwater Ellipsomyxa in the Amazon Basin, with the description of two new species. It also provides novel life history insights, expands host ranges, and proposes taxonomic revision. Ellipsomyxa filiformis n. sp. was identified infecting the gallbladder of the pimelodid Amazonian fish Hypophtha

Thinlip mullet Chelon ramada is the most abundant mullet species found in the Comacchio lagoons (northern Adriatic Sea, Italy). Histological and ultrastructural sections of the intestine of C. ramada showed that over 83% of 48 mullets were infected with the intestinal parasite Myxobolus mugchelo (Myxozoa). In histological sections, plasmodia of M. mugchelo containing mature spores were situated closer to mucosal folds and were surrounded by numerous mast cells (MCs). Mature spores, generally oval in shape, were observed in the paracellular space among the enterocytes or within them. Near the i

The myxozoan parasite Ceratomyxa shasta infects salmonids causing ceratomyxosis, a disease elicited by proliferation of the parasite in the intestine. This parasite is endemic to the Pacific Northwest of North America and salmon and trout strains from endemic river basins show increased resistance to the parasite. It has been suggested that these resistant fish (i) exclude the parasite at the site of invasion and/or (ii) prevent establishment in the intestine. Using parasites pre-labeled with a fluorescent stain, carboxyfluorescein succinimidyl diacetate (CFSE), the gills were identified as th

A new myxozoan species, Henneguya dugarovi sp. nov., was observed in the gills of Amur common carp Cyprinus carpio haematopterus Martens, 1846 (subspecies of common carp), which inhabits the Lake Baikal basin. The parasite was studied on the basis of spore morphology and molecular methods. Cysts were located intralamellarly in the secondary lamellae. Mature spores of H. dugarovi sp. nov. are symmetrical, with 2 unequal caudal appendages, the spore body is obovate in frontal view and lemon-shaped in lateral view. The spores have a total length of 24-42 μm, a mean ± SD body length of 11.7 ± 0.8

BACKGROUND: The myxosporean parasite Parvicapsula pseudobranchicola commonly infects farmed Atlantic salmon in northern Norway. Heavy infections are associated with pseudobranch lesions, runting and mortality in the salmon populations. The life-cycle of the parasite is unknown, preventing controlled challenge experiments. The infection dynamics, duration of sporogony, tissue tropism and ability to develop immunity to the parasite in farmed Atlantic salmon is poorly known. We conducted a field experiment, aiming at examining these aspects.
METHODS: Infections in a group of Atlantic salmon were

Myxosporean infections in frogs have been reported in countries worldwide. This study conducted a survey of myxosporean infection in cultured frogs in China, and identified a new species of Cystodiscus in Pelophylax nigromaculatus. This new species, named Cystodiscus nigromaculatus sp. n., was exclusively located in the gallbladder of P. nigromaculatus. The observed plasmodia appeared as oval formations within the bile, reaching sizes of up to 1.2 mm in diameter. Mature myxospores ellipsoid to ovoid in shape, measuring 13.6 ± 0.4 (13.0-14.6) μm in length and 7.8 ± 0.5 (6.8-8.9) μm in width, wi

Freshwater species of the myxozoan genus Ceratomyxa have recently emerged as a diverse group of parasites infecting fish in South America, many of which exhibit vermiform plasmodia with dynamic motility. In this integrative taxonomic study, we describe Ceratomyxa souzapintorum n. sp., a novel species infecting the gallbladder of the Amazonian clupeiform fish Pellona castelnaeana. The prevalence of infection was 73%, and the parasite displayed worm-like plasmodia exhibiting nematode-like motility. Arcuate myxospores measured 14.8 ± 1.7 µm in thickness and 6.1 ± 0.7 µm in length, with a posterio
