Nanostructured artificial nacre.

Finding a synthetic pathway to artificial analogs of nacre and bones represents a fundamental milestone in the development of composite materials. The ordered brick-and-mortar arrangement of organic and inorganic layers is believed to be the most essential strength- and toughness-determining structural feature of nacre. It has also been found that the ionic crosslinking of tightly folded macromolecules is equally important. Here, we demonstrate that both structural features can be reproduced by sequential deposition of polyelectrolytes and clays. This simple process results in a nanoscale vers

Thermochromic Artificial Nacre Based on Montmorillonite.

Nacre-inspired nanocomposites have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years because of their special mechanical properties and universality of the underlying principles of materials engineering. The ability to respond to external stimuli will augment the high toughness and high strength of artificial nacre-like composites and open new technological horizons for these materials. Herein, we fabricated robust artificial nacre based on montmorillonite (MMT) that combines robustness with reversible thermochromism. Our artificial nacre shows great potential in various fields such as aeros

Nacre-like composites with superior specific damping performance.

Biological materials such as nacre have evolved microstructural design principles that result in outstanding mechanical properties. While nacre's design concepts have led to bio-inspired materials with enhanced fracture toughness, the microstructural features underlying the remarkable damping properties of this biological material have not yet been fully explored in synthetic composites. Here, we study the damping behavior of nacre-like composites containing mineral bridges and platelet asperities as nanoscale structural features within its brick-and-mortar architecture. Dynamic mechanical ana

Nacre initiates biomineralization by human osteoblasts maintained in vitro.

When nacreous shell produced by the marine oyster Pinctada maxima, used as a biomaterial in oral surgery, is implanted in human bone, new bone formation occurs, resulting in a tight welding of the bone to the nacre [16]. These findings are consistent with the possibility that nacre adjacent to bone can locally stimulate osteogenic activity. To test this hypothesis, we have evaluated the effect of the simultaneous presence of bone and nacre on human osteoblasts in vitro. Nacre chips (1 mm3) were placed at approximately 1 mm distance from a similarly sized bone chip on a layer of first passage h

Nacre extract restores the mineralization capacity of subchondral osteoarthritis osteoblasts.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of joint chronic pain and involves the entire joints. Subchondral osteoarthritic osteoblasts present a mineralization defect and, to date, only a few molecules (Vitamin D3 and Bone Morphogenetic Protein2) could improve the mineralization potential of this cell type. In this context, we have tested for the first time the effect of nacre extract on the mineralization capacity of osteoblasts from OA patients. Nacre extract is known to contain osteogenic molecules which have demonstrated their activities notably on the MC3T3 pre-osteoblastic cell line.

Photoacoustic FTIR spectroscopic study of undisturbed nacre from red abalone.

In this work, photoacoustic Fourier transform infrared (PA-FTIR) spectroscopy has been utilized to study interfacial interactions of undisturbed nacre and nacre powder from red abalone shell. The spectra of both undisturbed nacre and nacre powder showed characteristic bands of aragonite and proteins. Although nacre powder and undisturbed nacre are chemically identical, PA-FTIR spectrum of undisturbed nacre is found to be significantly different from that of nacre powder. A broad and strong band is observed at around 1485 cm(-1) in nacre powder. The intensity of this band is notably reduced in

A Strong, Tough, and Stable Composite with Nacre-Inspired Sandwich Structure.

Improving the fracture resistance of nacre-inspired composites is crucial in addressing the strength-toughness trade-off. However, most previously proposed strategies for enhancing fracture resistance in these composites have been limited to interfacial modification by polymer, which restricts mechanical enhancement. Here, a composite material consisting of graphene oxide (GO) lamellae and nanocrystalline reinforced amorphous alumina nanowires (NAANs) has been developed. The structure of the composite is inspired by nacre and is composed of stacked GO nanosheets with NAANs in between, forming

Mechanically excellent nacre-inspired protective steel-concrete composite against hypervelocity impacts.

Steel-concrete (SC) composite widely used in military defensive project is due to its impressive mechanical properties, long-lived service, and low cost. However, the growing use of hypervelocity kinetic weapons in the present war puts forward higher requirements for the anti-explosion and penetration performance of military protection engineering. Here, inspired by the special 'brick-and-mortar' (BM) structural feature of natural nacre, we successfully construct a nacre-inspired steel-concrete (NISC) engineering composite with 2510 kg/m3, possessing nacre-like lamellar architecture via a bott

Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Polymer Composite Materials with Nacre-Mimetic Structures.

Organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have significant application potential in anticounterfeiting and biological imaging due to their large Stokes shifts and long phosphorescence lifetimes. Conventional RTP materials, which typically contain aromatic structures, often involve complex preparation processes and exhibit limited biocompatibility. In this work, a series of nontraditional intrinsic cluster-emitting polymeric materials with RTP properties were developed by utilizing strong ionic bonds and spatial confinement effects. Specifically, RTP-emitting derivatives of poly(

Hierarchical crystalline organic-inorganic framework enabling high-modulus toughening in nacre.

Enhancing toughness in nanocomposites often involves viscoelastic organic phases, but this typically reduces stiffness. We describe a high-modulus toughening mechanism in mature Cristaria plicata nacre arising from a crystalline organic-inorganic framework composed of aragonite nanorods alternately integrated with intratabular biomolecular crystallites. Due to the critical slip-length effect, these crystalline units approach the theoretical limits of modulus and strength. The nanoconfined biomolecular crystallites function as nanopins at interlamellar interphases, alleviating stress concentrat

Nacre-inspired underwater superoleophobic films with high transparency and mechanical robustness.

Underwater superoleophobic materials have attracted increasing attention because of their remarkable potential applications, especially antifouling, self-cleaning and oil-water separation. A limitation of most superoleophobic materials is that they are non-transparent and have limited mechanical stability underwater. Here, we report a protocol for preparing a transparent and robust superoleophobic film that can be used underwater. It is formed by a hydrogel layer prepared by the superspreading of chitosan solution on a superhydrophilic substrate and biomimetic mineralization of this layer. In

Shape-morphing into 3D curved surfaces with nacre-like composite architectures.

Inhomogeneous in-plane deformation of soft materials or cutting and folding of inextensible flat sheets enables shape-morphing from two dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D), while the resulting structures often have weakened mechanical strength. Shells like nacre are known for the superior fracture toughness due to the "brick and mortar" composite layers, enabling stress redistribution and crack stopping. Here, we report an optimal and universal cutting and stacking strategy that transforms composite plies into 3D doubly curved shapes with nacre-like architectures. The multilayered lamin

Dietary supplementation with nacre reduces cortical bone loss in aged female mice.

Aging is associated with detrimental bone loss leading to fragility fractures in both men and women. Notably, a majority of bone loss with aging is cortical, as well as a large number of fractures are non-vertebral and at the non-hip sites. Nacre is a product of mollusks composed of calcium carbonate embedded in organic components. As our previous study demonstrated the protective effect of nacre supplementation on trabecular bone loss in ovariectomized rats, we sought to evaluate the effect of dietary nacre on bone loss related to aging in female mice which do not suffer true menopause as obs

Sulfated Polysaccharide Isolated from the Nacre of Pearl Oyster Improves Scopolamine-Induced Memory Impairment.

Pearl and nacre have been used in traditional medicines for treating brain dysfunctions, such as epilepsy, myopia, palpitations and convulsions. We previously showed that a pearl oyster nacre extract improves scopolamine-induced memory impairments using the Y-maze, Banes maze and object recognition tests. In this study, we aimed to isolate the memory-improving substance using ion-exchange column chromatography and reverse-phase column chromatography and elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying its memory-improving activity. The isolated substance was found to be a sulfated polysaccharide w

Hybrid Bio-Inspired Structure Based on Nacre and Woodpecker Beak for Enhanced Mechanical Performance.

Materials with high strength and toughness have always been pursued by academic and industrial communities. This work presented a novel hybrid brick-and-mortar-like structure by introducing the wavy structure of the woodpecker beak for enhanced mechanical performance. The effects of tablet waviness and tablet wave number on the mechanical performance of the bio-inspired composites were analyzed. Compared with nacre-like composites with a flat tablet, the strength, stiffness and toughness of the novel hybrid nacre-like composite with tablet wave surface increased by up to 191.3%, 46.6% and 811.

Optical and theoretical study of NaCr(P2O7): a look through the Neuhauser model and Racah theory.

A sample of NaCr(P2O7) was synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement confirmed the formation of a monoclinic structure with the P21/a space group. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis identified the morphology and homogeneity of the chemical composition. The optical absorption spectrum revealed a direct optical band gap of 2.9 eV and an Urbach energy of 0.44 eV. Notably, the absorption spectrum showed an interference dip on the lowest energy band 4T2g(4F), attributed to spin-orbit coupling between state

Artificial Nacre with High Toughness Amplification Factor: Residual Stress-Engineering Sparks Enhanced Extrinsic Toughening Mechanisms.

The high fracture toughness of mollusk nacre is predominantly attributed to the structure-associated extrinsic mechanisms such as platelet sliding and crack deflection. While the nacre-mimetic structures are widely adopted in artificial ceramics, the extrinsic mechanisms are often weakened by the relatively low tensile strength of the platelets with a large aspect ratio, which makes the fracture toughness of these materials much lower than expected. Here, it is demonstrated that the fracture toughness of artificial nacre materials with high inorganic contents can be improved by residual stress

Nacre-inspired mineral-hydrogel PVDF membrane with superhydrophilicity, antifouling and antimicrobial properties for food oily wastewater treatment.

Membrane fouling caused by oil droplets and organic contaminants remains a significant challenge in food oily wastewater treatment. Inspired by nacre's architecture, a superhydrophilic PVDF-PCT-Cu membrane was fabricated via a combination of deposition with polydopamine, carboxymethyl chitosan and tetrabutyl titanate and mineralization with Cu2+. The membrane exhibited superhydrophilicity (water contact angle: 0°) and underwater superoleophobicity (underwater oil contact angle: 152.65° ± 0.88°). It achieves high permeation fluxes (290.20-342.71 L m-2 h-1) and separation efficiency (98.34-99.78
