Nairobi sheep disease virus/Ganjam virus.

Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV) is a tick-borne virus which causes a severe disease in sheep and goats, and has been responsible for several outbreaks of disease in East Africa. The virus is also found in the Indian subcontinent, where it is known as Ganjam virus. The virus only spreads through the feeding of competent infected ticks, and is therefore limited in its geographic distribution by the distribution of those ticks, Rhipicephalus appendiculata in Africa and Haemaphysalis intermedia in India. Animals bred in endemic areas do not normally develop disease, and the impact is therefore

Phylogeography and evolutionary dynamics of Nairobi sheep disease virus.

Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV) is a tick-borne orthonairovirus causing severe hemorrhagic gastroenteritis in small ruminants, with case fatality rate up to 90% among naive populations. Despite its veterinary and zoonotic importance, the evolution and spatiotemporal dynamics of NSDV remain poorly understood. We analysed S, M, and L segment sequences collected from the 1950s to 2024 in China, India, and Kenya, and identified three geographically structured lineages (Lineage A from India, Lineage B from China, and Lineage C from Kenya). No host-specific clustering was observed, indicating geo

The Geographical Coexist of the Migratory Birds, Ticks, and Nairobi Sheep Disease Virus May Potentially Contribute to the Passive Spreading of Nairobi Sheep Disease.

Nairobi sheep disease (NSD) is a hemorrhagic vector-borne disease of small ruminants caused by the Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV), also known as Ganjam virus (GV). NSDV and GV refer to the same virus. The NSDV has been identified in East Africa, India, Sri Lanka, and China, and NSDV vector ticks can be carried by birds. There is few research on the mechanism of the global cycle and spillover of NSDV. Based on the prediction of the high probability distribution areas of NSD by the maximum entropy model (MaxEnt), the possible passive transport routes of NSDV vector ticks by migratory birds w

Epidemiological, virological, and pathogenic insights into Nairobi sheep disease virus infection in sheep and goats in China.

Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV), a tick-borne pathogen in the Orthonairovirus genus of the Nairoviridae family, causes Nairobi sheep disease (NSD), which has mortality rates over 90% in sheep and goats. Historically, NSD outbreaks in East Africa and South Asia have led to considerable economic losses. Although NSDV genomic fragments have been detected in ticks in China, there has been a notable absence of reported infections in local sheep and goats. In this study, we report the first identification of NSDV infection in sheep and goats in China. Through meta-transcriptomics sequencing, NSDV

Generation and Characterisation of Monoclonal Antibodies against Nairobi Sheep Disease Virus Nucleoprotein.

Nairobi sheep disease (NSD), caused by the viral agent NSD virus (NSDV), is a haemorrhagic fever disease affecting and inducing high mortality in sheep and goat populations. NSDV belongs to the genus Orthonairovirus of the Nairoviridae family from the order Bunyavirales. Other viruses circulating in livestock such as Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) and Dugbe virus (DUGV) are members of the same genus and are reported to share antigenic features. There are very few available materials to study NSDV infection both in vitro and in vivo. In the present work, we characterised two mon

Molecular and serological evidence of Nairobi sheep disease virus in Haemaphysalis longicornis and sheep in eastern Shandong Peninsula, China.

BACKGROUND: Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV), a highly pathogenic tick-borne orthonairovirus affecting ruminants, represents an emerging zoonotic threat. While endemic to East Africa, recent reports confirm its presence in Asia. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: This study investigated NSDV circulation in the eastern Shandong Peninsula. ANIMALS: A total of 745 Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks (grouped into 139 pools) and 246 ruminant serum samples were collected during 2021 field surveillance in Weifang and Yantai regions. METHODS: Molecular detection employed quantitative reverse transcription PCR a

Serological cross-reactivity between Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus and Nairobi sheep disease virus glycoprotein C.

INTRODUCTION: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) and Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV) are orthonairoviruses of concern, able to cause haemorragic fever disease in humans and sheep, respectively. CCHFV and NSDV cocirculating in small ruminant populations across South Asia and East Africa. Cross-reactivity to viruses of the Orthonairovirus genus can potentially interfere with serological assays when employed for serosurveillance in regions where two or more genus members overlap in their distribution. METHODS: In this study, sheep sera sampled from a region of confirmed CCHFV circ

Identification and phylogenetic analysis of Nairobi sheep disease virus from Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks in Shandong Province, China.

Nairobi Sheep Disease (NSD) is a typical tick-borne syndrome characterized by severe hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, spontaneous abortion, and a high case fatality rate in small ruminants. The pathogenic agent, Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV), has also been associated with human infections, indicating its possible zoonotic potential. Prior to this study, NSDV has been detected from ticks collected in Jilin, Hubei, and Liaoning provinces in China. In the present study, a total of 343 ticks (Haemaphysalis longicornis) were collected in Shandong province, China in 2020, and pooled into 16 librari

The proprotein convertase SKI-1/S1P is a critical host factor for Nairobi sheep disease virus infectivity.

Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV) belongs to the Orthonairovirus genus in the Bunyavirales order and is genetically related to human-pathogenic Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). NSDV is a zoonotic pathogen transmitted by ticks and primarily affects naïve small ruminants in which infection leads to severe and often fatal hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Despite its veterinary importance and the striking similarities in the clinical picture between NSDV-infected ruminants and CCHFV patients, the molecular pathogenesis of NSDV and its interactions with the host cell are largely unknown.

Antibodies to the core proteins of Nairobi sheep disease virus/Ganjam virus reveal details of the distribution of the proteins in infected cells and tissues.

Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV; also called Ganjam virus in India) is a bunyavirus of the genus Nairovirus. It causes a haemorrhagic gastroenteritis in sheep and goats with mortality up to 90%. The virus is closely related to the human pathogen Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). Little is currently known about the biology of NSDV. We have generated specific antibodies against the virus nucleocapsid protein (N) and polymerase (L) and used these to characterise NSDV in infected cells and to study its distribution during infection in a natural host. Due to its large size and the p

Genomes and seroprevalence of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus and Nairobi sheep disease virus in Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks and goats in Hubei, China.

Ticks are medically-important arthropods that maintain and transmit numerous emerging viruses. China suffers severely from tick-borne viral diseases such as tick-borne encephalitis and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), but the background of tick-borne viruses is very limited. Here we report the virome profiling of ticks and goat sera from SFTS-epidemic areas, and serological investigation of SFTS virus (SFTSV) and Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV). Results revealed divergent viruses in ticks and goat sera, including SFTSV and NSDV. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses showed t

The nairovirus nairobi sheep disease virus/ganjam virus induces the translocation of protein disulphide isomerase-like oxidoreductases from the endoplasmic reticulum to the cell surface and the extracellular space.

Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV) of the genus Nairovirus causes a haemorrhagic gastroenteritis in sheep and goats with mortality up to 90%; the virus is found in East and Central Africa, and in India, where the virus is called Ganjam virus. NSDV is closely related to the human pathogen Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus, which also causes a haemorrhagic disease. As with other nairoviruses, replication of NSDV takes place in the cytoplasm and the new virus particles bud into the Golgi apparatus; however, the effect of viral replication on cellular compartments has not been studied extensi

Major tick-borne diseases of sheep and goats in the Sudan.

Tick-borne diseases of sheep and goats have not been thoroughly investigated in the Sudan. Heartwater, the most important of the group, was reported only in the early '60s and malignant theileriosis of sheep in the mid '80s. Other tick-borne diseases of sheep and goats like anaplasmosis, Q fever, Nairobi sheep disease and babesiosis are expected to be present although the vector which transmit Nairobi sheep disease, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus is confined to a very narrow stretch on the Southern border with Zaire, Uganda and Kenya.

Ganjam virus (GANV), a member of genus Nairovirus of family Bunyavirdae is of considerable veterinary importance in India. Though, predominantly tick borne, GANV was also isolated from mosquitoes, man and sheep. Neutralizing and complement fixing antibodies to GANV have been detected in animal and human sera collected from different parts of the country. Thirty three strains of GANV have been isolated from India, mainly from Haemaphysalis ticks. The virus replicated in certain vertebrate and mosquito cell lines and found pathogenic to laboratory animals. One natural infection and five laborato
