Diamond, composed of sp³ covalent carbon bonds, is renowned for its exceptional hardness, thermal conductivity, and wide bandgap, yet its intrinsic brittleness severely limits deformation and processing. Here, we report an amorphization-mediated ultralarge plasticity in nanodiamonds using a custom-designed in-situ transmission electron microscopy mechanical holder. Unlike conventional mechanisms such as dislocation motion or crystalline phase transformation, the deformation is governed by the formation of an interconnected amorphous carbon network that accommodates stress and enables cooperati

Nanodiamonds (NDs) have emerged as potential candidates for versatile platforms in nanomedicine, offering unique properties that enhance their utility in drug delivery, imaging, and therapeutic applications. To improve their biocompatibility and nanomedical applicability, NDs are coated with organic polymer chains, such as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), which are well known to prolong their blood-circulating lifetime by reducing the surface adsorption of serum proteins. Theoretical simulations are useful tools to define, at the atomic level, the optimal parameters that guide the presentation of

Neurodegenerative diseases are complex in both their nature and prognosis. The difficulties associated with penetrating the blood-brain barrier (BBB), achieving site-specific targeting to the brain, and identifying the genetic etiologies responsible make treating neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and stroke, challenging. The aim to treat disease at the molecular level has galvanized nanotechnology research. Among the forms of nanoparticles (NPs) explored thus far, nanodiamonds

Cytokine release syndrome (CRS) is a systemic inflammatory response resulting in overexpression of cytokines in serum and tissues, which leads to multiple-organ failure. Due to rapid aggravation of symptoms, timely intervention is paramount; however, current therapies are limited in their capacity to address CRS. Here, we find that the intravenous injection of highly purified detonation-synthesized nanodiamonds (DND) can act as a therapeutic agent for treating CRS by adsorbing inflammatory cytokines. Highly purified DNDs successfully inactivated various key cytokines in plasma from CRS patient

A systematic spectroscopic characterization of highly homogeneous water suspensions of 'buckydiamonds' comprising sp3cubic nanodiamond (ND) core covered with disordered sp2shell densely decorated with oxygen-containing groups demonstrates the excitation-wavelength-dependent photoluminescence (PL) given by at least four types of specific structures on the ND surface (hydroxyl, C=O containing ketones, carboxylic anhydrides, and carboxyl groups). PL properties of NDs suspensions possess concentration-dependent behavior revealing tendency of NDs to agglomerate. PL of NDs has been found to be stron

Commercial hernia mesh is commonly made from polypropylene (PP), due to its inertness, biocompatibility, physical properties, ease of processing and versatility for conversion into flexible shape. However, reportedly hernia mesh prepared from PP experienced issues such as diminished long-term strength, foreign body rejection, lack of biocompatibility and high adhesion to the abdomen wall. Infiltration of the mesh by soft tissue (called remodeling) results in an integration of mesh into the body, leading to a rapid reduction in mesh mechanical properties and potential infection. Here, this stud

Carboxylic acid is a commonly utilized functional group for covalent surface conjugation of carbon nanoparticles that is typically generated by acid oxidation. However, acid oxidation generates additional oxygen containing groups, including epoxides, ketones, aldehydes, lactones, and alcohols. We present a method to specifically enrich the carboxylic acid content on fluorescent nanodiamond (FND) surfaces. Lithium aluminum hydride is used to reduce oxygen containing surface groups to alcohols. The alcohols are then converted to carboxylic acids through a rhodium (II) acetate catalyzed carbene i

The quantum spin properties of nitrogen-vacancy defects in diamond enable diverse applications in quantum computing and communications1. However, fluorescent nanodiamonds also have attractive properties for in vitro biosensing, including brightness2, low cost3 and selective manipulation of their emission4. Nanoparticle-based biosensors are essential for the early detection of disease, but they often lack the required sensitivity. Here we investigate fluorescent nanodiamonds as an ultrasensitive label for in vitro diagnostics, using a microwave field to modulate emission intensity5 and frequenc

The use of nanodiamonds for biomedical and consumer applications is growing rapidly. As their use becomes more widespread, so too do concerns around their cytotoxicity. The cytotoxicity of nanodiamonds correlates with their cellular internalisation and circulation time in the body. Both internalisation and circulation time are influenced by the formation of a protein corona on the nanodiamond surface. However, a precise understanding of both how the corona forms and evolves and its influence on cytotoxicity is lacking. Here, we investigated protein corona formation and evolution in response to

BACKGROUND: Solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes various deleterious effects, and UV blockage is recommended for avoiding sunburn. Nanosized titanium dioxide and zinc oxide offer effective protection and enhance cosmetic appearance but entail health concerns regarding their photocatalytic activity, which generates reactive oxygen species. These concerns are absent in nanodiamonds (NDs). Among the UV wavelengths in sunlight, UVB irradiation primarily threatens human health.
RESULTS: The efficacy and safety of NDs in UVB protection were evaluated using cell cultures and mouse models. We dete

Detonation nanodiamonds (NDs) are promising drug delivery and imaging agents due to their uniquely faceted surfaces with diverse chemical groups, electrostatic properties, and biocompatibility. Based on the potential to harness ND properties to clinically address a broad range of disease indications, this work reports the in-human administration of NDs through the development of ND-embedded gutta percha (NDGP), a thermoplastic biomaterial that addresses reinfection and bone loss following root canal therapy (RCT). RCT served as the first clinical indication for NDs since the procedure sites in

Nanodiamonds hosting colour centres are promising building blocks for quantum technologies, enabling advances in quantum computation1,2, nanoscale NMR spectroscopy3-6, single-spin magnetometry7,8, wide-field quantum imaging9 and single-photon sources10,11. However, the controlled bottom-up synthesis of ultrasmall and structurally uniform nanodiamonds has remained a challenge, with existing methods producing heterogeneous materials that vary in size, morphology, impurity content and defect quality. Here we show that well-defined, hydrogen-terminated molecular nanographenes serve as chemically c

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) cost $0.4-0.5 billion a year in the US and is the second most common disease affecting millions of people. As resistance to antibiotics becomes more common, a greater need for alternative treatments is needed. Nanodiamond particles (NDPs) are actively researched as drug delivery platforms due to their biocompatibility, particle size, and stable inert core. This research is aimed at developing NDPs as antibiotic drug delivery platforms for treating UTIs. To this end, 100 nm, 75 nm, 25 nm and 6 nm size NDPs are purified with acid and heat treatment techniques. Ram

Fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) are versatile nanomaterials with promising properties. However, efficient functionalization of FNDs for biomedical applications remains challenging. In this study, we demonstrate mesoporous polydopamine (mPDA) encapsulation of FNDs. The mPDA shell is generated by sequential formation of micelles via self-assembly of Pluronic F127 (F127) with 1,3,5-trimethyl benzene (TMB) and composite micelles via oxidation and self-polymerization of dopamine hydrochloride (DA). The surface of the mPDA shell can be readily functionalized with thiol-terminated methoxy polyethylen

Nanodiamonds (ND) belong to the nano-carbon family, which involves several synthesis, post-synthesis methods, and other modifications for ND preparation. NDs have played vital role both inside and outside of medicine in recent years. The study of NDs has stated in early 1960s, NDs are smaller particles with a size of about 4-5 nm with confined size distribution, large-scale synthesis at lower costs relying on the carbon explosives ignition, apparent surface functional design along with bio-conjugation and extreme biocompatibility. It has been predicted that the ND's magnetic characteristics wi

The aim is to develop irradiated nanodiamonds (INDs) as a molecularly targeted contrast agent for high-resolution and phenotype-specific detection of breast cancer with photoacoustic (PA) imaging. The surface of acid treated radiation-damaged nanodiamonds was grafted with PEG to improve its stability and circulation time in blood, followed by conjugation to an anti-HER2 peptide with a final nanoparticle size of approximately 92 nm. Immunocompetent mice bearing orthotopic HER2-positive or negative tumors were administered INDs and PA imaged using an 820-nm near-infrared laser. PA images demonst

Three-dimensional (3-D) scaffolds made of polymers are relevant for cell culture and sensor immobilization to convert biological signals into optical signals for detection. We present a computational study of 3-D pillar-and-scaffold nanostructures designed for embedding the negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV-) color centers in nanodiamonds, focusing on light confinement and emission enhancement. To develop optically active platforms for quantum sensing, we analyze the electric field profiles in both pillar-without-scaffold and pillar-and-scaffold dielectric structures at the zero phonon l

Grafting of paramagnetic transition and rare earth metal ions onto the surface of detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) was successfully implemented in the recent decade and opened new opportunities in the biomedical application of these compounds, particularly as novel contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging. The grafting was studied mainly using EPR, NMR, and magnetic measurements. Such a highly surface-sensitive, quantitative, chemical analytic technique as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was very rarely used. In this paper, we report the XPS study of grafting transition and rare-ear

Local targeted "inside-out" hyperthermia of tumors via nanoparticles is able to sensitize tumor cells to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, gene therapy, immunotherapy, or other effects, significantly reducing the duration and intensity of treatment. In this article, new nanomaterials are proposed to be used as anticancer agents: boron-doped nanodiamonds with sizes of about 10 nm synthesized for the first time by the high-temperature high-pressure (HTHP) method. The heating ability of boron-doped nanodiamonds was investigated under different heating conditions in different environments: water, c
