Fluorescent Ultrashort Nanotubes.

ConspectusUltrashort single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), defined here as ∼1 to 50 nm segments, match the characteristic dimensions of biological pores, nanofluidic channels, and emerging quantum architectures, where quantum confinement, topological edge states─electronic states localized at the tube termini─and atomic defects converge to generate new functionalities for sensing, imaging, and optoelectronics. Yet this length regime has been largely inaccessible optically: ultrashort SWCNTs rarely emit light because mobile excitons rapidly diffuse to quenching sites at the tube ends. Fluore

A Double-walled Noncovalent Carbon Nanotube by Columnar Packing of Nanotube Fragments.

Herein, we report the synthesis of double-walled noncovalent carbon nanotubes (CNTs) through host-guest complexation of nanotube fragments and tube-forming crystal engineering. As the smallest fragment of double-walled CNTs, a host-guest complex of perfluorocycloparaphenylene (PFCPP) and carbon nanobelt (CNB) was synthesized by mixing them in solvents. The immediate complexation of the PF[12]CPP⸧(6,6)CNB complex with a remarkably high association constant (Ka) of 2×105 L/mol was observed. Time-dependent 1H NMR and thermogravimetry measurements revealed that the stability of (6,6)CNB was signif

Influence of Carbon Nanotube-Pretreatment on the Properties of Polydimethylsiloxane/Carbon Nanotube-Nanocomposites.

Incorporating nanofillers into elastomers leads to composites with an enormous potential regarding their properties. Unfortunately, nanofillers tend to form agglomerates inhibiting adequate filler dispersion. Therefore, different carbon nanotube (CNT) pretreatment methods were analyzed in this study to enhance the filler dispersion in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/CNT-composites. By pre-dispersing CNTs in solvents an increase in electrical conductivity could be observed within the sequence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) > acetone > chloroform. Optimization of the pre-dispersion step results in an AC c

Evaluation of a carbon nanotube-titanate nanotube nanocomposite as an electrochemical biosensor scaffold.

A significant aspect of this work is the development of a multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-titanate nanotube (TNT) nanocomposite to serve as a biocompatible scaffold with high conductivity on a biosensor surface. Unlike other scaffolds consisting of MWCNTs alone or TNTs alone, the MWCNT-TNT nanocomposite synergistically provides excellent biocompatibility, good electrical conductivity, low electrochemical interferences and a high signal-to-noise ratio. For comparison, after characterising a scaffold consisting of MWCNTs alone, TNTs alone and a MWCNT-TNT nanocomposite using several spectrosco

Carbon Nanoparticles-Decorated Carbon Nanotubes.

Multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were decorated by activated carbon nanoparticles of resorcinol-formaldehyde aerogels. Carbon nanospheres and MWCNTs were mixed by equal mass ratios for different durations. The products were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, nanoscanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. The results indicated that a significant decoration with carbon nanoparticles occurred onto the MWCNTs.

Connecting carbon nanotubes using Sn.

Process of Sn coating on mutiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and formation of interconnections among nanotubes are studied using high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Surface oxidation of nanotubes during heating with HNO3 prior to the SnCl2 treatment and the bonding between functional groups and Sn are found to be responsible for the coating and its stability. Open nanotubes are filled as well as coated during tin chloride treatment. Coating and filling are converted into the coatings on the inner as well as outer walls of the

Reversibly Thermochromic Cyclic Dipeptide Nanotubes.

Owing to their capability of forming extensive hydrogen bondings and the facile introduction of chirality, cyclic dipeptides (CDPs) have gained great attention as scaffolds for functional supramolecules. Surprisingly, introduction of a photopolymerizable diacetylene (DA) moiety to the CDP afforded nanotubular structures with enhanced stability and reversible thermochromism. A series of CDP-containing DAs (CDP-DAs) are prepared by coupling 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid with CDPs, cyclo(-Gly-Ser) and cis/trans cyclo(-Ser-Ser). Fabrication of CDP-DA self-assemblies in a polar chloroform and methano

Semiconducting cyanide-transition-metal nanotubes.

We propose a new type of structurally simple and energetically stable cyanide-transition-metal nanotube, based on the planar structure of M(CN)2, (M = Ni, Pd, Pt). These nanotubes have a semiconducting character with a large bandgap (2-3 eV) that is insensitive to chirality and diameter. The energetic, electronic, and mechanical properties of these materials in both planar and tubular forms are studied through first-principles density functional theory calculations. The calculations reveal interesting multicenter bonding features, which should lead to preferential growth of tubes of a particul

SnO2 nanoparticle-functionalized boron nitride nanotubes.

Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) were synthesized by a carbon-free chemical vapor deposition method using boron and metal oxide as reactants. Then SnO(2) nanoparticles were functionalized on them via a simple wet chemistry method. Detailed transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations reveal that SnO(2) nanoparticles may cover the tube surface or be encapsulated in tube channels. The lattice distances of both BNNT and SnO(2) have been changed due to the strong interactions between them. The band gap energy of SnO(2) particles is found enlarged due to the size effect and interaction with B

Amyloid fibers are water-filled nanotubes.

A study of papers on amyloid fibers suggested to us that cylindrical beta-sheets are the only structures consistent with some of the x-ray and electron microscope data. We then found that our own 7-year-old and hitherto enigmatic x-ray diagram of poly-L-glutamine fits a cylindrical sheet of 31 A diameter made of beta-strands with 20 residues per helical turn. Successive turns are linked by hydrogen bonds between both the main chain and side chain amides, and side chains point alternately into and out of the cylinder. Fibers of the exon-1 peptide of huntingtin and of the glutamine- and asparagi

The molecular architecture of tunneling nanotubes.

Tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) are thin intercellular bridges that mediate the exchange of proteins, organelles, and nucleic acids between neighboring cells. They are enriched in tumor cells, implicated in chemotherapy resistance, induced in models of aggregation-based diseases, and their formation is stimulated by viruses that use TNTs to enhance infection. Despite their broad relevance and therapeutic potential, TNT morphology and function remain poorly understood, owing to the absence of clear morphological criteria and the limitations of light microscopy. Here, we establish two complementary s

Toxicity of carbon nanotubes: A review.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are widely used in the aerospace, automotive, and electronics industries because of their stability, enhanced metallic, and electrical properties. CNTs are also being investigated for biomedical applications such as drug delivery systems and biosensors. However, the toxic potential of CNTs was reported in various cell lines and animal models. The toxicity depends on diverse properties of the CNTs, such as length, aspect ratio, surface area, degree of aggregation, purity, concentration, and dose. In addition, CNTs and/or associated contaminants were well known for oxidat

Antigenotoxic potential of boron nitride nanotubes.

Boron and boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are increasingly used in different industrial fields and, potentially, in some biomedical areas. As occurs with other nanomaterials (NMs), to increase our knowledge on their potential health hazards is a priority. Although in vitro approaches are a routine in getting biological information on the biological effects of NMs, the use of simple in vivo model organisms is receiving an increased interest. In this context, Drosophila melanogaster is widely used as a eukaryotic model for the study of the potential harmful effects associated with various agents

Universal parameters for carbon nanotube network-based sensors: can nanotube sensors be reproducible?

Carbon nanotube (CNT) network-based sensors have been often considered unsuitable for practical applications due to their unpredictable characteristics. Herein, we report the study of universal parameters which can be used to characterize CNT network-based sensors and make their response predictable. A theoretical model is proposed to explain these parameters, and sensing experiments for mercury (Hg(2+)) and ammonium (NH(4)(+)) ions using CNT network-based sensors were performed to confirm the validity of our model.

Nanotube-assisted protein deactivation.

Conjugating proteins onto carbon nanotubes has numerous applications in biosensing, imaging and cellular delivery. However, remotely controlling the activity of proteins in these conjugates has never been demonstrated. Here we show that upon near-infrared irradiation, carbon nanotubes mediate the selective deactivation of proteins in situ by photochemical effects. We designed nanotube-peptide conjugates to selectively destroy the anthrax toxin, and also optically transparent coatings that can self-clean following either visible or near-infrared irradiation. Nanotube-assisted protein deactivati

Selective deposition and alignment of single-walled carbon nanotubes assisted by dielectrophoresis: from thin films to individual nanotubes.

Dielectrophoresis has been used in the controlled deposition of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with the focus on the alignment of nanotube thin films and their applications in the last decade. In this paper, we extend the research from the selective deposition of SWNT thin films to the alignment of small nanotube bundles and individual nanotubes. Electrodes with "teeth"-like patterns are fabricated to study the influence of the electrode width on the deposition and alignment of SWNTs. The entire fabrication process is compatible with optical lithography-based techniques. Therefore, the

Intertube Interactions in Multivariant Metal-Organic Nanotubes.

Incorporating disparate functionalized ligands into phase-pure metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been shown to produce multivariate MOFs (MV-MOFs) whose properties often exceed those of the corresponding linker-pure MOFs. The ability to easily prepare MV-MOFs is due to covalent bonds linking MOF ligands and secondary building units in all three dimensions, leaving ample space for the ligands inside the 3D pores. In contrast, metal-organic nanotubes (MONTs), a one-dimensional subclass of MOFs, aggregate into crystalline materials via noncovalent interactions between the tubes. This stark cont

Doping of carbon nanotubes by halogenated solvents.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) play a unique role in the area of flexible conductors as they have remarkably high electrical conductivity and bend easily without deformation. Consequently, CNTs are commonly deposited on substrates as conductive tracks/coatings. Halogenated solvents are often employed to facilitate the deposition process because they dry rapidly due to their high volatility. In this work, we report that halogenated solvents can dope CNTs considerably. The study showed that the use of dichloromethane, chloroform, or bromoform for the CNT deposition significantly impacts the chemical po
