Credible narrators and misinformed readers.

Stories have a powerful ability to shape our beliefs, attitudes, opinions, and knowledge about the world. In the current work, we ask how readers evaluate the truth of facts embedded in fiction. In three experiments, we investigate the influence of the credibility of the story's narrator on the likelihood that readers encode and recall misinformation contained in the narrative. Participants read stories containing accurate real-world facts and misleading lures. The stories were narrated by either a credible or a non-credible narrator. Following the stories, participants were tested for the cri

The Scrotum Narrates the Inside Story….

Pyoscrotum is rarely encountered in neonates and is secondary to a local pathology such as neglected torsion or epididymo-orchitis. Pyoscrotum from an intra-abdominal pathology is possible in the presence of a patent processus vaginalis and has been rarely reported in the context of acute appendicitis. We report our experience with a case of antenatal bowel perforation presenting postnatally after an absolutely asymptomatic "honeymoon" period.

Narrated video of a re-do colposuspension.

AIMS: To present a narrated video designed to demonstrate the steps involved in an open re-do colposuspension. METHODS: This was in a 70-year-old woman who presented with recurrent severe stress urinary incontinence. Urodynamics confirmed severe urodynamic stress incontinence, with no detrusor over activity. Her maximum urethral closure pressure (MUCP) was 8 cm/water. She previously had a total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH), bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) and colposuspension in 1998. Subsequently, she had a TVT in 2002 and then partial excision of the tape in 2003 due to erosion. This w

Narrating consciousness: language, media and embodiment.

Although there has long been a division in studies of consciousness between a focus on neuronal processes or conversely an emphasis on the ruminations of a conscious self, the long-standing split between mechanism and meaning within the brain was mirrored by a split without, between information as a technical term and the meanings that messages are commonly thought to convey. How to heal this breach has posed formidable problems to researchers. Working through the history of cybernetics, one of the historical sites where Claude Shannon's information theory quickly became received doctrine, we

Narrating narcolepsy--centering a side effect.

The mass-vaccination with Pandemrix was the most important preventive measure in Sweden during the A(H1N1) influenza pandemic of 2009-2010, and covered 60% of the population. From 2010, an increased incidence of the neurological disease narcolepsy was reported, and an association with Pandemrix was affirmed for more than 200 children and young adults. The parental experience of this side effect provided a starting point for a collectively shaped critical narrative to be acted out in public, but also personalized narratives of continual learning about the disease and its consequences. This dida

Development of Cerebral Endoscopy in Italy: Background, Narration, and Legacy.

Bibliometric analysis shows that neuroendoscopy (NE) overcame its pioneering phase in the late 1980s, and became a significant technological and clinical innovation in the early 1990s. During those years the charge-coupled device digital video cameras were introduced and videoendoscopy had its decisive breakthrough, laying the foundation for NE take-off. NE can be considered an early product of artificial intelligence, as much as neuroimaging and neuronavigation. In Italy, cerebral NE started in 1993 and, despite a couple of years of relative delay, gained ground rapidly thanks also to the per

Narrating dementia: self and community in an online forum.

In this article, I examine how individuals diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease use illness narratives to construct community. The ability to narrate is a fundamental component of the self. Using 354 posts by 32 members of an Internet forum, I argue that people with Alzheimer's, whose ability to narrate, and thus create a self, was compromised, nonetheless managed to tell stories of redemption out of which a salvaged self emerged. Narratives are essential for the construction of self, but as I show in this article, they are also essential for the construction of community. Forum memb

Narratives and the psychological functions of narration in French lockdown diaries.

The COVID-19 pandemic was an 'extraordinary' situation that raised many ethical and political questions about the role of care in society, as well as the exercise of democracy in the context of major restrictions on freedoms. During the first lockdown in France, many people shared their daily experiences in 'lockdown diaries'. This can be explained by the psychological functions of narration which, among other things, allow people to break out of isolation by sharing their feelings and daily life. For this reason, we analysed pandemic-related narratives published online in France throughout th

Vocabulary and expressive morpho-syntax in individuals with Down syndrome: Links to narration.

BACKGROUND: Narrative ability is crucial for social participation in everyday and school life but involves different language abilities such as vocabulary and morpho-syntax. This is particularly difficult for individuals who display both language and cognitive impairments. Previous research has identified productive vocabulary as a possible key factor for narrative performance in individuals with Down syndrome. Considering a close connection between lexical and morpho-syntactic performance within language acquisition and the distinct impairments that individuals with Down syndrome display conc

Narrating the journey of sustained recovery from substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: The reported high rate of relapse in the context of an ever-increasing rate of substance abuse internationally and in South Africa together with the fact that the topic of sustained recovery from Substance Use Disorder (SUD) appears to be totally neglected in extant literature and research agendas motivated the researchers to conduct this investigation. The aim was to obtain an in-depth understanding of how individuals recovering from a SUD experience and sustain their recovery in order to fill the gap in the knowledge base. METHODS: A qualitative research approach was followed, e

[Prosody and reading: Temporal and melodic characteristics in the dyslexic child in reading and narration].

Dyslexia is widely associated to a massive phonological awareness deficit. This deficit leads to difficulties in grapheme to phoneme conversions in reading and difficulties in words and sentences productions. The origin of the phonological deficit is partially explained by the magnocellular, cerebellar and articulatory theories. Recently, an increasing number of studies demonstrated the relationship between prosody and reading and, more specifically, the potential key role of suprasegmental phonology in the healthy development of phonological representations. The aim of this study is to explor

FMRI correlates of autobiographical memory: Comparing silent retrieval with narrated retrieval.

FMRI studies of autobiographical memory (AM) retrieval typically ask subjects to retrieve memories silently to avoid speech-related motion artifacts. Recently, some fMRI studies have started to use overt (spoken) retrieval to probe moment-to-moment retrieved content. However, the extent to which the overt retrieval method alters fMRI activations during retrieval is unknown. Here we examined this question by eliciting unrehearsed AMs during fMRI scanning either overtly or silently, in the same subjects, in different runs. Differences between retrieval modality (silent vs. narrated) included gre

Narrating care and medical authority in Egyptian fiction: a medical humanities approach.

This article analyses how Egyptian novels construct experiences of medicine, care and institutional authority through comparative close readings of Naguib Mahfouz's The Day the Leader Was Killed, Youssef Ziedan's Azazeel, Ahmed Mourad's The Blue Elephant and Nawal El Saadawi's Woman at Point Zero Situated in medical humanities, it treats literature as narrative knowledge production, articulating ethical and experiential dimensions of medicine beyond empirical documentation. Drawing on narrative and institutional theory, the article develops a four-part analytical vocabulary-bureaucratic waitin

The extrapituitary effects of GnRH antagonists and their potential clinical implications: a narrated review.

Potential roles of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonists on GnRH/GnRH receptor systems and their effects on the extrapituitary tissues are largely elusive. In this narrated review, we summarized the systemic effects of GnRH antagonists on ovary, endometrium, embryo implantation, placental development, fetal teratogenicity, reproductive tissue cancer cells, and heart while briefly reviewing the GnRH and GnRH receptor system. GnRH antagonists may have direct effects on ovarian granulosa cells. Data are conflicting regarding their effects on endometrial receptivity. The GnRH antagonis

Narrating kidney disease: the significance of sensation and time in the emplotment of patient experience.

Drawing on research conducted among patients in Ireland, this article examines the narrative constructions of chronic kidney failure and explores the ways in which patient narratives cross-cut and subvert modernist medical constructions of transplantation as a therapeutic outcome, an endgame, a "gift of life." In experience, patients dismantle this construction structure by emplotting their stories around the painful lack of an ending, ardently brought to bear by the lived realities of immunosuppressant drug therapy, the silent fears of graft rejection, and the isolation of recipiency. They ar

Auditory hallucinations as a personal experience: analysis of non-psychiatric voice hearers' narrations.

This exploratory research investigates the phenomenon of non-psychiatric auditory hallucinations from the perspective of the voice hearer, evaluating the possibility that this experience can contribute the maintenance and adaptation of the hearer's personal identity system. A semi-structured interview was administered to 10 Italian voice hearers, six men and four women, aged 18-65 years, who had never been in contact with any mental health services because of the voices, even though some of them had been hearing voices for decades. Participants were not distressed or worried about the voices;

Fertility-sparing surgery for diffuse adenomyosis: a narrated, stepwise approach to the Osada procedure.

OBJECTIVE: To equip reproductive surgeons with an approach to the Osada procedure and critical prophylactic hemostatic measures that optimize perioperative outcomes. DESIGN: Stepwise demonstration of the Osada procedure with narrated video footage. SETTING: Definitive management of symptomatic adenomyosis requires hysterectomy. However, adenomyomectomy can improve symptoms and restore anatomy while maintaining fertility potential. Limited but comparable perioperative outcomes exist for minimally invasive methods of adenomyomectomy, and most involve resection of focal, not diffuse, adenomyosi
