The nasolabial fold was analyzed by studying changes with aging in the nasolabial fold and adjacent soft-tissue features. Chronologic photographs were obtained from 19 older subjects, taken approximately every 10 years, from age 20 to their present age. In a separate phase of the study, facial portraits in repose and smiling were taken of young and old adult subjects with a mechanical frame used for setting an objective point of reference. Facial landmarks were identified and depth measurements were made in the anteroposterior direction. Relative lengths of selected points also were determined

Nasolabial cysts represent uncommon, non-odontogenic soft tissue lesions believed to arise from remnants of the nasolacrimal duct, and are a rare form of cysts in the maxillofacial region. They most frequently occur in women during their fourth and fifth decades of life and usually appear as a slow-growing, painless swelling located in the nasolabial fold. We present the case of a 31-year-old female patient with a six-month history of a painful, soft, fluctuant, 3x3 cm nasolabial fold swelling. CT suggested a cystic lesion, confirmed as a nasolabial cyst after intraoral excision via sublabial

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcomas (RMS) of the nasolabial fold can be difficult to manage surgically due to functional and cosmetic limitations. Therefore, brachytherapy (BT) has been proposed to improve local control while limiting the volume of irradiation as well as the extent of the surgical excision.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen pediatric cases with RMS of the nasolabial fold treated from 1971 to 2005 were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: Median follow-up was 4.4 years (1.7-33). Half of the patients were male and their age at diagnosis ranged from 4 months to 13.5 years. Histological su

An acute nasolabial angle and a prominent nasolabial fold are two features that are often associated in the aging face. A new technique is presented that simultaneously addresses both of these features. Levator alae (levator labii superioris alaeque nasi) muscle resection, performed through a subciliary incision, improves the acute nasolabial angle without concomitant rhinoplasty. At the same time, levator alae muscle resection softens the medial nasolabial fold. Partial levator labii superioris muscle resection has occasionally been added to further weaken the middle nasolabial fold. Fresh ca

BACKGROUND: Skin ischemia is a severe complication of nasolabial fold (NLF) hyaluronic acid filler injections. The specific patterns, distribution, and extent of skin necrosis remain poorly understood. The aim of this study is to provide new insights into skin necrosis following NLF injections by analyzing clinical cases and facial anatomy.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with skin ischemia after NLF injections was conducted. Computed tomography angiography and anatomical dissections were performed on cadavers to study the facial artery.
RESULTS: Twelve patients with skin ischemi

BACKGROUND: Nasolabial fold (NLF) is an important anatomic sign of facial aging. However, the dynamic biomechanical relationships between the facial mimetic muscles (FMMs) and the NLF remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the dynamic biomechanical relationships between the FMM and various NLF by finite-element analysis (FEA).
METHODS: The 3-dimentional computer-aided design (3D CAD) model of the skin-muscle-maxillofacial bone in the NLF was established by using the engineering design module of the Computer-Aided 3-dimensional Interactive Application (CATIA) software. Thi

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a benign lesion that occurs most frequently in the soft tissues and viscera. In the head and neck region, the tumor has been reported to occur in the orbit, tongue, nasopharynx, larynx, and paranasal sinuses and the central nervous system. Despite being a benign lesion, it exhibits infiltrative and destructive behaviours, making histopathological examination necessary to confirm the diagnosis. We report the case of a 38-year-old female presented with a right nasolabial fold mass, which was confirmed histologically to be an IMT. Surgical excision of t

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although considerable attention has been directed toward the nasolabial fold in the esthetic surgery literature, there are infrequent discussions of the fold's importance in reconstructive surgery of the face. Because the use of common reconstructive techniques for wounds of the central face often introduces undesirable asymmetry to the nasolabial folds, reconstructive surgeons should be more aware of the esthetic consequences of manipulating the nasolabial folds.
METHODS: The influence of selected reconstructive procedures of the central face on the form and symmet

OBJECTIVES: In patients with facial paralysis, facial reanimation surgery may be needed to normalize facial soft tissue function/movements. Critical for this normalization is the dynamics of the nasolabial folds (NLFs). The objective of this prospective, observational study was to determine the 3D morphologic dynamics of the NLFs in patients with unilateral facial palsy and normal subjects.
SETTINGS AND SAMPLE POPULATION: 3D facial soft tissue movement data collected from adults with unilateral, facial paralysis (Bell's Palsy, n = 36); and (2) an age- and sex-frequency matched control group (

Objective : This exploratory research sought to extend the cleft phenotype by identifying movement-related soft tissue appearance changes in the midfacial region in individuals with cleft lip/palate or those with genetic susceptibility to cleft lip/palate (unaffected relatives). The cleft phenotype (clinically identified orofacial cleft or subclinical orbicularis oris defect) was hypothesized to be associated with movement related appearance changes in the midfacial region, e.g., with furrowing and dimpling during speech. Design : Changes in the appearance of skin in the midfacial region, incl

The cartilage anchor is a cartilagineous strip inserted subcutaneously in front of the nasolabial fold which allows precise forming and movement of the nasolabial fold in facial palsy. It is taken from ear cartilage. Static and dynamic symmetry can be improved considerably by fixing a free microvascular muscle transplant or a sling plasty to the cartilage anchor. In cases of significant laxity of the paralysed side of the face, the combination of muscle transplant and sling plasty may be helpful.

BACKGROUND: Nasolabial-fold (NLF) severity is a key indicator of facial aging and a frequent target in aesthetic treatments. The Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale (WSRS) is widely used for clinical grading but remains inherently subjective and vulnerable to inter-observer variability.
OBJECTIVES: The authors of this study aim to develop and validate DeepFold, a deep learning-based ensemble model for automated, objective, and clinically interpretable grading of NLF severity based on the WSRS.
METHODS: A dataset of 6718 facial images was constructed, including 1718 images from clinical outpatients

BACKGROUND: Nasolabial folds, or "smile lines," result from the interaction of several anatomical structures, including the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi and the zygomaticus major and minor muscles, which place continuous tension on the dermis. Although the deep pyriform space is a common target for treating these folds, filler migration from this space can cause undesirable outcomes.
AIMS: To examine the anatomical characteristics and potential benefits of using a newly identified medial space: the perialar space, adjacent to the deep pyriform space, for nasolabial fold volumization

Background: The nasolabial fold (NLF) greatly contributes to facial aesthetics; changes to NLF depth and vector are disfiguring in patients with facial paralysis (FP). NLF parameters are integral to clinician-graded outcomes, but automated programs currently lack NLF identification capabilities. Objective: To incorporate an automated NLF identification and quantification function into the facial landmark program, Emotrics, and to compare new Emotrics-derived NLF data to clinician-graded electronic facial paralysis assessment (eFACE) data for accuracy. Methods: Photographs of 135 patients with
