Nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a tumor arising from the epithelial cells that cover the surface and line the nasopharynx. The annual incidence of NPC in the UK is 0.3 per million at age 0-14 years, and 1 to 2 per million at age 15-19 years. Incidence is higher in the Chinese and Tunisian populations. Although rare, NPC accounts for about one third of childhood nasopharyngeal neoplasms. Three subtypes of NPC are recognized in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification: 1) squamous cell carcinoma, typically found in the older adult population; 2) non-keratinizing carcinoma; 3) undiffe

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma represents a morphologic spectrum of neoplasms localized to the nasopharynx and arising from nasopharyngeal epithelium. Nasopharyngeal carcinomas have rather unique clinical, epidemiologic, pathologic, and biologic features. The morphologic spectrum of nasopharyngeal carcinoma includes keratinizing, nonkeratinizing, and undifferentiated subtypes. The separation of these morphologic types is not an academic exercise, but has practical importance relative to differential diagnosis, management, and prognosis. A similar morphologic classification applies to carcinomas aris

Nasopharyngeal granulomatous mass after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnosis, management and nasal endoscopic surgical outcome of nasopharyngeal granulomatous mass in post-radiation nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 23 cases of granulomatous mass after radiotherapy for NPC from 2008 to 2013 treated with nasal endoscopic surgery were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Radiotherapy dose (p=0.036) and chemotherapy (p<0.001) correlated with the latency period after the treatment against NPC. The symptoms of the 23 patients before the treatment were nonspecific including nasal obstruction, purul

Postradiation nasopharyngeal necrosis in the patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced nasopharyngeal necrosis is a consequential late effect in the patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Patients with NPC who have been treated with high-dose radiotherapy are at risk of developing postradiation nasopharyngeal necrosis (PRNN). However, the analysis of PRNN with a significant cohort of patients has not been reported in English-language literature. In this study, we aimed to evaluate PRNN in 28 patients with NPC. METHODS: From June 2006 to December 2007, 28 patients were diagnosed with PRNN with pathologic evidence. Surgical procedure of endosc

Pediatric Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC).

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pediatric nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare epithelial malignancy strongly associated with Epstein–Barr virus infection and typically presents at an advanced stage due to its deep anatomical location and nonspecific symptoms. The purpose of this review is to summarize current evidence regarding epidemiology, molecular pathogenesis, diagnostic advances, and contemporary treatment outcomes in pediatric NPC. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies confirm that pediatric NPC is predominantly an undifferentiated non-keratinizing carcinoma and is almost universally associated with

Biomarkers for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant tumor that is highly prevalent in Southeast Asia, particularly in China and Indonesia. According to the World Health Organization's global cancer statistics in 2022, there were 120,434 new cases and 73,485 deaths from NPC. Risk factors contribute to NPC development including genetic factors, dietary habits, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. This paper reviews the comparison of different types of EBV test for NPC over the last few years and summarized the performance of novel diagnostic biomarker such as newly reported EBV antibody, anti-BNLF2

[Radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

Nasapharyngeal carcinoma is a rare disease. Oftenly, the diagnostic is made for advanced disease. Localized tumors, T1 or T2 NO observed a good prognosis and are locally controlled in more than 90 % of the cases by radiotherapy alone. The standard treatment of locally advanced disease is combined chemoradiation. A special vigilance of fast decrease of the volume of the pathological lymph nodes, sometimes associated to loss of weight might indicate an adaptive dosimetric revision. The treatment of recurrent disease is of great importance. Surgical indications are limited but should be discussed

[Immunogenetics of nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a complex multifactorial disorder involving both genetic and environmental factors. Genetic predisposition linked to the immune system has been associated with various tumors. This involves genetic diversity of the genes encoding the molecules of the immune response such as inflammation and anti-tumor surveillance. In this work, we examined the impact of the immunogenetic diversity on the risk of the NPC in different populations studied. These data show that the interindividual variability of the genetic regulation of immune processes increases the risk of NPC

Advances in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma prognosis is related to its potential locoregional invasion and metastatic spread. Among prognostic factors, initial tumor-node-metastasis stage is the main one, besides other biological parameters. Worldwide development of positron emission tomography imaging is changing modalities of staging. Concomitant chemoradiotherapy represents one of the most recent advances in the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients, besides intensity-modulated radiation therapy. This review updates these recent advances in diagnosis and treatment of nasopharyngea

Epidemiology of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare malignancy in most parts of the world, with an incidence well under 1 per 100,000 person-years. Exceptions are the Chinese, especially the Cantonese living in the central region of Guangdong Province in Southern China. Other populations with elevated rates include the natives of Southeast Asia, the natives of the Artic region, and the Arabs of North Africa and parts of the Middle East. Intake of preserved foods at an early age has been linked to NPC risk in all population groups with increased NPC rates. Other recognized risk factors for NPC are cigaret

[Nasopharyngeal carcinoma in childhood].

From 1964 to 1983, 54304 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) had been diagnosed in our hospital, of which 53 (0.10%) were under 14 years old. Among the 53 cases, 4 (7.55%) had Stage II, 36 (67.92%) Stage III, 12 (22.64%) Stage IV and 1 (1.89%) unstaged lesions, 26.42% had presenting symptoms related to nasopharyngeal lesion and 73.58% to cervical mass. Involvement of the cranial nerves was relatively rare. There was a significant difference between the adult and children patients on the ratio of carcinoma to sarcoma (4.08:1 for children, 443:1 for adult). Among the poorly differentiated ca

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a review.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is an umbrella term for a group of malignant epithelial tumors with different etiopathogenesis and a broad range of histopathological appearances. Some types have a dramatically skewed geographical and ethnic distribution and shows virtually 100% association with Epstein Barr virus. The field of other/contributing etiological factors are only partially known and recently a subset of this carcinoma has been linked to transcriptionally active Human Papilloma virus. As with all malignant tumors, the clinical stage of disease is of paramount importance. Despite loco-region

Imaging of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is a unique disease that shows clinical behaviour, epidemiology and histopathology that is different from that of other squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is now the preferred imaging modality in the assessment and staging of NPC, especially in relation to its superior soft tissue contrast, ability to demonstrate perineural tumour spread, parapharyngeal space, bone marrow involvement and its ability to show the involvement of adjacent structures, such as the adjacent paranasal sinuses and intracranial extension. An unders

Actinomycosis imitating nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

The incidence of nasopharyngeal actinomycosis is exceedingly rare. To our knowledge, only 1 case has been reported previously. This article presents 4 cases of actinomycosis involving the nasopharynx that imitated nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Acidic gas exposure and farming of aquatic products are possibly involved in the pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal actinomycosis. Patients in the case studies completely recovered after 4 weeks of oral antibiotic treatment. We recommend including actinomycosis in the differential diagnosis of nasopharyngeal neoplasms.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma with dermatomyositis.

From 1976 to 1986, ten out of 1154 consecutive nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients were found to have dermatomyositis (DM). Their clinical features and treatment results were analyzed. The skin manifestation was typical of DM and myopathy occurred in seven patients. All the tumor on presentation were early stage and locoregional control after radiotherapy was satisfactory. All but one patient had DM prior to diagnosis of NPC. The prognosis of NPC was not affected by DM with survival being comparable to contemporary controls. The complication of radiotherapy were unusually severe. Chronic r

The aetiology of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a disease with a remarkable racial and geographical distribution. In most parts of the world it is a rare condition and in only a handful of places does this low risk profile alter. These include the Southern Chinese, Eskimos and other Arctic natives, inhabitants of South-East Asia and also the populations of North Africa and Kuwait.
