[Acute bilateral ophthalmoplegia and nasopharyngeal neoplasms].

The cranial nerves, due to its location, are not infrequently involved in the nasopharyngeal neoplasm evolutionary course. In this paper we describe two cases in which the neoplastic infiltration in both cavernous sinuses brought the appearance of an acute bilateral ophthalmolegia on. This symptomatology meant, in the first case, the onset of disease. In the second one, it was the reason of consultation. Later we discuss the topographic location of the damages in both cavernous sinuses considering the observed neurological shortcomings. Finally we approach a short revision of the causes of bil

Most nasal/nasopharyngeal lymphomas are peripheral T-cell neoplasms.

Eleven consecutive cases of nasal/nasopharyngeal lymphoma were studied histologically and with a panel of monoclonal antibodies. The disease showed a male predominance and occurred over a wide age range, with a median of 52 years. Five patients had midfacial destructive disease, and six had gross tumor masses involving the nose/nasopharynx. Three cases were classified as small cleaved cell, two cases as mixed cell, five cases as large cell, and one case as immunoblastic lymphoma. Those belonging to the first two categories also satisfied the diagnostic criteria of so-called polymorphic reticul

Nasopharyngeal neuroendocrine neoplasms: Systematic review of the literature and case presentation.

Most of neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are located in the gastrointestinal tract and lung, and they are rarely found on the upper aero-digestive tract, which limit the current literature about nasopharyngeal NENs. This systemic review will summarize the clinical, pathological features and optimal diagnosis and management of different types of nasopharyngeal NENs (NP NENs). In-addition, we herein report an EBV negative TP53-mutated/ Rb-wild type nasopharyngeal neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) in a young man in which touch preparation cytology studies were integral to establishing a definitive di

[Secondary head and neck osteosarcoma following treatment of undifferentiated nasopharyngeal neoplasms (UCNT)].

Secondary tumours after radio and/or chemotherapy are mainly of hematopoietic (acute non lymphoblastic leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma) or soft tissue lineage previously described most frequently after breast cancer and Hodgkin disease treatment with radio and/or chemotherapy. We report two cases of classical osteosarcoma's observed 9 and 3 years after treatment for UCNT with combined radiotherapy and alkylant-based adjuvant chemotherapy in one case and exclusive loco-regional irradiation in the second case.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in the ophthalmic practice: A serious neoplasm presenting initially to ophthalmologists.

PURPOSE: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is an aggressive malignant tumor that arises from the nasopharyngeal epithelial lining. Most patients with NPC present with a neck mass or cranial nerve palsy. It is infrequent for patients with NPC to present to an ophthalmologist initially with ophthalmic complaints and absence of prior diagnosis of NPC. We are reporting a series of six NPC cases that presented solely with ophthalmic complaints, to attract the attention of ophthalmologist to such a serious neoplasm. METHODS: A retrospective observational study of all consecutive patients diagnosed wit

Actinomycosis imitating nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

The incidence of nasopharyngeal actinomycosis is exceedingly rare. To our knowledge, only 1 case has been reported previously. This article presents 4 cases of actinomycosis involving the nasopharynx that imitated nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Acidic gas exposure and farming of aquatic products are possibly involved in the pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal actinomycosis. Patients in the case studies completely recovered after 4 weeks of oral antibiotic treatment. We recommend including actinomycosis in the differential diagnosis of nasopharyngeal neoplasms.

Discerning primary tumors from metastases in synchronous nasopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: A case report and review of the literature.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is one of the most common types of malignant tumor in Southern China and Southeast Asia, and its etiology is closely associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Non-keratinizing carcinoma accounts for >95% of all nasopharyngeal carcinoma cases. In addition, metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma from other locations in the body is extremely rare. This study reports the case of a 53-year-old female who presented with a lesion on the left nasal alar skin that had slowly developed over a five-year period. A biopsy was obtained and the lesion was histologically diagno

[Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma with intracranial extension: situating the chemotherapy-radiotherapy association].

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a locally aggressive, although histologically benign, vascular neoplasm. This neoplasm accounts for 0.05% of head and neck tumours and affects almost exclusively male adolescents. Surgery is considered as the primary treatment of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. Other treatment modalities such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy are still recommended for intracranial extension involving the cavernous sinus or the internal carotid artery. We report a rare case of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, further complicated with a Kennedy syndrome in a 34 year-old women. The treatmen

[A case of nasopharyngeal carcinoma accompanying erythroderma].

We describe a 58-years-old man with a primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma accompanying erythroderma. His first symptoms were systemic scattered erythema and itching for six months. Lower right cervical lymphadenectasis was found by physical examination. A neoplasm in nasopharynx could be seen with nasal endoscope. The pathology of the neoplasm was non-keratinizing carcinoma. This case illustrates that "erythroderma" could be a paraneoplastic effect of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

[Thyroid-like low-grade nasopharyngeal papillary adenocarcinoma: one case report].

Thyroid-like papillary adenocarcinoma is an extremely rare neoplasm in the nasopharynx. We present a case with a pedunculated tumor in the nasopharyngeal vault. Complete tumor resection via nasal endoscopy was performed subsequently. Postoperative histopathological examinations and immunohistochemical studies confirmed the diagnosis of thyroid-like papillary adenocarcinoma. This rare neoplasm demonstrated a distinct etiology and nature from typical nasopharyngeal carcinomas and should be managed mainly by surgical resection.

Synchronous Presence of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma and Marginal Zone (MALT-Type) B-Cell Lymphoma in the Pharynx.

Synchronous malignancy of squamous cell carcinoma and malignant lymphoma in the head and neck region is extremely rare. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a nonlymphomatous, squamous cell carcinoma that occurs in the nasopharyngeal epithelium. Reported herein is a unique case of nasopharyngeal carcinoma occurring simultaneously with MALT-type lymphoma in an 83-year-old woman, who complained of deglutition dysfunction. Endoscopic examination of respective organs revealed a submucosal tumour on the posterior wall of pharynx. Biopsy of the hypopharynx was taken and sent for histological examination, whi

Nasopharyngeal Papillary Adenocarcinoma as a Second Head and Neck Malignancy.

Nasopharyngeal adenocarcinomas are rare tumours, and include neoplasms arising from the nasopharyngeal surface epithelium as well as those of minor salivary gland origin, each of which is distinct from the other. The former encompasses nasopharyngeal papillary adenocarcinoma (NPAC), also known as low grade NPAC and thyroid-like NPAC, an extremely unusual malignancy bearing histomorphological similarity to papillary thyroid carcinoma, and displaying indolent clinical behaviour. We report the case of a 41-year-old lady who developed NPAC as a second malignancy five-and-a-half years after being d

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma represents a morphologic spectrum of neoplasms localized to the nasopharynx and arising from nasopharyngeal epithelium. Nasopharyngeal carcinomas have rather unique clinical, epidemiologic, pathologic, and biologic features. The morphologic spectrum of nasopharyngeal carcinoma includes keratinizing, nonkeratinizing, and undifferentiated subtypes. The separation of these morphologic types is not an academic exercise, but has practical importance relative to differential diagnosis, management, and prognosis. A similar morphologic classification applies to carcinomas aris
