Workshop on schizophrenia.

On November 29-30, 1995, the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine brought together experts in schizophrenia and specialists in other areas of the biological sciences in a workshop aimed at promoting the application of the latest biological information to this clinical problem. The workshop paid particular attention to evidence of pathology in the brains of people with schizophrenia, and to the possibility that this reflects an abnormality in brain development that eventually leads to the appearance of symptoms. The participants were impressed with the complexity of the pr

Developing a national HIV/AIDS Prevention Program through state health departments.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) shaped the basic development and direction of the HIV/AIDS Prevention Program through technical support and financial assistance for State and local health departments and other organizations. Through this provision of support, CDC has responded to the course of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic by creating programs to preserve the safety of the blood supply, by developing counseling and testing centers, by promoting "safer sex," by promoting health education and risk reduction, by evaluating existing

Response to Medical Errors.

Despite improvements in patient safety science over the past 15 years since the Institute of Medicine's publication of To Err Is Human, medical errors remain a major contributor to adverse patient outcomes and mortality. In the aftermath of a harmful medical error, providers often face dilemmas regarding how to best report and disclose errors.

A use-and-transformation model for evaluating public R&D: illustrations from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) research.

Evaluating federally funded research and development (R&D) presents unique challenges to both federal science agencies and evaluators. Often focusing only on outcome evaluative measures (such as productivity or economic value) can shortchange the true value of the federal investment. For example, program directors at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) talk about the "value added" of the new interdisciplinary science centers that they have funded-and they hope to be able to capture how funding can generate increased capacity for new cutting-edge resear

Dietary Reference Intakes: the new basis for recommendations for calcium and related nutrients, B vitamins, and choline.

Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) represent the new approach adopted by the Food and Nutrition Board to providing quantitative estimates of nutrient intakes for use in a variety of settings, replacing and expanding on the past 50 years of periodic updates and revisions of the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs). The DRI activity is a comprehensive effort undertaken to include current concepts about the role of nutrients and food components in long-term health, going beyond deficiency diseases. The DRIs consist of 4 reference intakes: the RDA, which is to be used as a goal for the individual;

More fraudulent history of cancer risk assessment: The US National Academy of Sciences Biological Effects of Atomic Radiation (BEAR) I Genetics Panel used falsified data greatly exaggerating hereditary/cancer risks.

This paper reports that data used by the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Biological Effects of Atomic Radiation (BEAR) I Genetics Panel (1956) to estimate risks of hereditary damage in the US population were falsified, greatly exaggerating the risks. These risk estimates were mostly based on the first of many mouse specific-locus experiments of William and Liane Russell, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which were determined in 1996 to be erroneous by a US Department of Energy (DOE) investigation of scientific misconduct. The basis of the falsification is that William Russell removed data
