Tobacco cessation services for cancer survivors: A capture and coding of U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Cancer Center webpages.

INTRODUCTION: People who continue to smoke after receiving a cancer diagnosis experience adverse outcomes. National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Centers (NCI-DCCs) can help prevent these adverse outcomes by offering tobacco cessation services. This study examined the online availability of tobacco cessation service information by searching NCI-DCC websites to identify webpages offering tobacco treatment services and/or resources ("web capture") and by systematically coding these webpages to characterize the services offered and information provided ("webpage coding"). METHODS: The web c

Clinical trial data sharing: a cross-sectional study of outcomes associated with two U.S. National Institutes of Health models.

The impact and effectiveness of clinical trial data sharing initiatives may differ depending on the data sharing model used. We characterized outcomes associated with models previously used by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH): National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's (NHLBI) centralized model and National Cancer Institute's (NCI) decentralized model. We identified trials completed in 2010-2013 that met NIH data sharing criteria and matched studies based on cost and/or size, determining whether trial data were shared, and for those that were, the frequency of secondary internal p

Determining the Cancer Center priorities at the Wilmot Cancer Institute: A proposed framework informed by an academic-community collaborative approach.

Current National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Center Support Grant guidelines include a Community Outreach and Engagement merit descriptor related to the justification of Cancer Center priorities. Unfortunately, there is limited guidance and published literature on the process of determining the Cancer Center priorities. The purpose of this commentary is to propose a framework for Cancer Center prioritization, informed by the academic-community collaborative approach that the Wilmot Cancer Institute (Wilmot) at the University of Rochester implemented as part of a successful application for NC

A Proposed System Toward Standardizing Surgical-Based Treatments for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma, From the Joint National Cancer Institute-International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer-Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation Taskforce.

This article is a joint effort arising from a task force formed at a National Cancer Institute-International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer-Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation Mesothelioma Clinical Trials Planning Meeting, held at the NIH in March 2017. Malignant pleural mesothelioma remains one of the most virulent and recalcitrant malignancies, still considered incurable, and in desperate need of clinical trials in order to make progress for our patients. Although not standard of care, there is compelling evidence that a select subgroup of mesothelioma patients benefit from a

Regional Consortia of Cancer Center Shared Resources: Models for Collaborative Infrastructure and the Emergence of a National Alliance.

Shared resource facilities are foundational to the scientific productivity of National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers, yet institutional silos frequently constrain member access to specialized instrumentation and expertise. Interinstitutional consortia of shared resources offer a pragmatic solution, enabling reciprocal service access at internal rates while preserving institutional autonomy. Here we describe two established regional consortia, the Mid-Atlantic Cancer Center Shared Resource Consortium (MACCSRC) and the Fred Hutchinson/University of Washington/Seattle Children'

The National Cancer Institute and Cannabis and Cannabinoids Research.

The landscape of both recreational and medicinal cannabis use has changed dramatically over the past decade; however, research examining the risks and benefits of cannabis and cannabinoid use has lagged significantly behind the increased media promotion and their use by the general public and cancer patients. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has supported cannabis-related research projects and funding opportunity announcements. In addition, NCI organized a virtual symposium on December 15-18, 2020, to discuss recent research findings on the use of cannabis and cannabinoids in relationship t
