Comorbidity of rosacea and depression: an analysis of the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and National Hospital Ambulatory Care Survey--Outpatient Department data collected by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics from 1995 to 2002.

BACKGROUND: Psychogenic factors have been considered to be important in the exacerbation and possibly the onset of rosacea. However, there are very few studies that have reported conclusive findings. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between rosacea and major depressive disease, a common and usually treatable psychiatric disorder. METHODS: Data from 1995 to 2002, collected by the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and the outpatient component of the National Hospital Ambulatory Care Survey, which are both nationally representative surveys of healthcare visits in the U.S.A., were st

Cancer statistics, 2004.

Each year, the American Cancer Society estimates the number of new cancer cases and deaths expected in the United States in the current year and compiles the most recent data on cancer incidence, mortality, and survival rates based on incidence data from the National Cancer Institute and mortality data from the National Center for Health Statistics. Incidence and mortality rates are age standardized to the 2000 US standard million population. A total of 1,368,030 new cancer cases and 563,700 deaths are expected in the United States in 2004. Incidence rates stabilized among men from 1995 throug

Visits to selected health care practitioners: United States, 1980.

This report, based on data from the 1980 National Medical Care Utilization and Expenditure Survey, presents statistical estimates on visits to different types of practitioners by the noninstitutionalized civilian population of the United States. The report does not include dental visits, telephone visits, emergency room visits, or visits in which a physician was also seen. The practitioners whose visits are reported vary from the highly independent practitioners with doctorate degrees (opticians, chiropractors, podiatrists, and many psychologists); to the nurses, paramedics, social workers, an

Preliminary data: exposure of persons aged > or = 4 years to tobacco smoke--United States, 1988-1991.

The recent report of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on the respiratory health effects of passive smoking (1) and the known adverse effects of active smoking emphasize the need to quantify the exposure of the U.S. population to tobacco smoke. Measurements of cotinine (a nicotine metabolite) in serum, urine, and saliva have been used effectively to quantify exposure to tobacco smoke (2-10). As part of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), CDC's National Center for Environmental Health and National Center for Health Statistics is measuring serum levels

Acute measles mortality in the United States, 1987-2002.

We used capture-recapture methodology to estimate total deaths and efficiency of reporting for 2 systems. During 1987-1992, there were 165 measles-associated deaths in the multiple-cause mortality database at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and 184 reported to the measles surveillance system at the National Immunization Program (NIP). We estimated that 259 measles deaths actually occurred; the reporting efficiencies were 64% for the NCHS and 71% for the NIP. Overall the death-to-case ratio was 2.54 and 2.83 deaths/1000 reported cases, using the NCHS and NIP data, respectively.

From single-race reporting to multiple-race reporting: using imputation methods to bridge the transition.

In 1997, the Office of Management and Budget issued revised standards for the collection of race information within the Federal statistical system. One revision allows individuals to choose more than one race group when responding to Federal surveys and other Federal data collections. This paper explores methods that impute single-race categories for those who have given multiple-race responses. Such imputations would be useful when it is desired to conduct analyses involving only single-race categories, such as when trends over time are being examined by race group so that data collected unde

Racial and ethnic differences in ADHD and LD in young school-age children: parental reports in the National Health Interview Survey.

OBJECTIVES: Racial and ethnic disparities have been documented for many physical health outcomes in children. Less is known, however, about disparities in behavioral and learning disorders in children. This study uses data from a national health survey to examine racial and ethnic differences in identified attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning disability (LD). METHODS: The 1997-2001 National Health Interview Surveys obtained information from parents about the health and sociodemographic characteristics of children. Using these data, prevalence rates of identified ADHD a

The 1988 National Maternal and Infant Health Survey: design, content, and data availability.

The 1988 National Maternal and Infant Health Survey was conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics to study factors related to poor pregnancy outcome, such as adequacy of prenatal care; inadequate and excessive weight gain during pregnancy; maternal smoking, drinking, and drug use; and pregnancy and delivery complications. The survey is a nationally representative sample of 11,000 women who had live births, 4000 who had late fetal deaths, and 6000 who had infant deaths in 1988. Mothers were mailed questionnaires based on information from certificates of live birth, reports of fetal

Complications in cesarean and non-cesarean deliveries: United States, 1980.

Using 1980 National Hospital Discharge Survey data, complications reported for cesarean and non-cesarean deliveries coded by the Ninth Revision ICD-CM are compared. While over 16 per cent of all deliveries in 1980 were by C-section, 94 per cent of the deliveries where maternal-infant disproportion was noted were by C-section, and this complication was noted in one-fourth of all C-section deliveries. Similarly, where malposition or malpresentation of the fetus was evident, 59 per cent of the mothers were delivered by C-section, and this complication was noted in one-sixth of all C-section deliv

Silicosis mortality with respiratory tuberculosis in the United States, 1968-2006.

The presence of tuberculosis (TB) in patients with silicosis increases mortality risk. To characterize silicosis-respiratory TB comortality in the United States, the authors used 1968-2006 National Center for Health Statistics multiple cause-of-death data for decedents aged ≥25 years. The authors calculated proportionate mortality ratios (PMRs) using available information on decedents' industries and occupations reported from 26 states from 1985 through 1999. Among 16,648 silicosis deaths, 2,278 (13.7%) had respiratory TB listed on the death certificate. Of silicosis-respiratory TB deaths, 1,6

Occupation May Influence Risk of Cancer Mortality.

Based on data from the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics, researchers have found that occupation may influence the risk of cancer mortality among working adults, ages 20 to 64. Broadly speaking, men working in construction and extraction-for instance, roofers and mining machine operators-and women working in transportation had the highest mortality rates. Numerous factors beyond carcinogen exposure, such as job stressors leading to tobacco and alcohol use, inconsistent income, and limited health-care access could explain why.

Medical and life-style risk factors affecting fetal mortality, 1989-90.

OBJECTIVES: This report presents fetal mortality data by medical and life-style risk factors of the mother and the fetus. METHODS: Deaths and fetal mortality rates are presented in this descriptive report. Data sources used are vital statistics data for fetal deaths and live births. RESULTS: The data that became available with the revision of the U.S. Standard Report of Fetal Death in 1989 expanded the medical and health data available on mothers and fetuses. Reporting of medical conditions is probably incomplete for fetal deaths as well as for live births. Therefore, caution should be exerc

The relation between projected breast cancer risk, perceived cancer risk, and mammography use. Results from the National Health Interview Survey.

BACKGROUND: Although the use of mammography on at regular intervals can save lives, not all women obtain the repeat mammography recommended in guidelines. OBJECTIVE: To assess the associations between routine mammography use, perceived cancer risk, and actual projected cancer risk. METHODS: We include women who were 45 to 75 years of age and who had responded to the 2000 National Health Interview Survey. Women who reported that they believed their risk of getting cancer in the future was "medium" or "high" were considered jointly as "medium/high-risk perception.""Routine mammography use" was
