A longitudinal examination of childhood maltreatment and adolescent obesity: results from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (AddHealth) Study.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to explore the association between childhood maltreatment (e.g., neglect, physical and sexual abuse) and longitudinal growth trajectories of body mass index (BMI) from adolescence to young adulthood. METHODS: We used latent curve modeling to examine data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (N=8,471), pooling years 1995-2008. Relative weight was indicated by BMI. RESULTS: Children who experienced neglect had a faster average rate of BMI growth over time compared to children who experienced no childhood maltreatment. In addition, the co-occurrence of

Predicting adolescents' longitudinal risk for sexually transmitted infection: results from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health.

BACKGROUND: Influencing adolescents' sexual behaviors has the potential to influence trajectories of risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among young adults. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether family, school, and individual factors associated with increased duration of virginity also protect against STIs in young adulthood. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. Wave I of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health occurred in 1995 when participants were in grades 7 through 12. Six years later, all wave I participants who could be located were invited to participate in wave III a

Protecting adolescents from harm. Findings from the National Longitudinal Study on Adolescent Health.

CONTEXT: The main threats to adolescents' health are the risk behaviors they choose. How their social context shapes their behaviors is poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To identify risk and protective factors at the family, school, and individual levels as they relate to 4 domains of adolescent health and morbidity: emotional health, violence, substance use, and sexuality. DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of interview data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 12118 adolescents in grades 7 through 12 drawn from an initial national school survey of

Abortion and subsequent depressive symptoms: an analysis of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health.

BACKGROUND: Twenty states currently require that women seeking abortion be counseled on possible psychological responses, with six states stressing negative responses. The majority of research finds that women whose unwanted pregnancies end in abortion do not subsequently have adverse mental health outcomes; scant research examines this relationship for young women. METHODS: Four waves of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health were analyzed. Population-averaged lagged logistic and linear regression models were employed to test the relationship between pregnancy resolut

Longitudinal assessment of comorbidities and co-occurring conditions in adolescents with migraine: A secondary analysis of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health).

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the links between adolescent migraine and comorbid and co-occurring conditions using a large, nationally representative longitudinal study. BACKGROUND: Comorbidities and co-occurring conditions play an important role in the clinical treatment of individuals with migraine. Research in this area has focused largely on the adult population using cross-sectional data, but less is known about adolescents and how conditions may co-occur over time from a broader developmental perspective. The goals of this manuscript were to empirically evaluate the associations between ado

Long-term air pollution exposure and markers of cardiometabolic health in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health).

BACKGROUND: Air pollution exposure is associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Although exposure to air pollution early in life may represent a critical window for development of cardiovascular disease risk factors, few studies have examined associations of long-term air pollution exposure with markers of cardiovascular and metabolic health in young adults. OBJECTIVES: By combining health data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) with air pollution data from the Fused Air Quality Surface using Downscaling (FAQSD) archive, we: (1) calcu

Longitudinal trajectories of depression across adolescence, emerging adulthood and adulthood: Findings from the national longitudinal study of adolescent to adult health (add health) (1994-2008).

BACKGROUND: The heterogeneity of depression is well documented. Consistent with the Life Course Theory, longitudinal analysis establishing trajectories may demonstrate the stability and variation of depression. METHODS: Data from four waves of the US National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) were used to investigate depression trajectories. Nine items from the Center for Epidemiological Studies (CESD) measured depression of 9421 participants. Trajectories were established using growth mixture modelling (GMM) and multinomial regression was employed to explore the i

Chronic hypertension and risk of preterm delivery: National Longitudinal Study of Adolescents to Adult Health.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hypertension during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of adverse birth outcomes. In 2017, the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) lowered thresholds to classify hypertension in non-pregnant adults to SBP ≥ 130 mmHg and DBP ≥ 80 mmHg (ie stage I hypertension), resulting in an additional 4.5-million reproductive-aged women meeting criteria for hypertension. Little is known about effects of pre-pregnancy blood pressure (BP) in this range. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effect of pre-pregnancy maternal BP on preterm delivery. METHODS:

Sexual Assault Victimization in Premature Female Mortalities: Evidence from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health.

Previous research has documented many behavioral problems associated with being a female victim of sexual assault, but little attention has been devoted to whether this experience might be related to premature mortalities. We investigated this utilizing the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health survey, collected from over 10,000 adolescent females in 1995, whose premature deaths (n = 65) were noted in 2007 in National Death Index records. Significant associations were found between females with a substance misuse history and their premature deaths, but not with being a sexu

Have Mischievous Responders Misidentified Sexual Minority Youth Disparities in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health?

The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) has been instrumental in identifying sexual minority youth health disparities. Recent commentary suggested that some Wave 1 youth responders, especially males, intentionally mismarked same-sex attraction and, as a result, published reports of health disparities from these data may be suspect. We use two recently developed approaches to identify "jokesters" and mischievous responding and apply them to the Add Health data. First, we show that Wave 1 same-sex attracted youth, including those who later reported completely h

Genome-wide DNA methylation association study of recent and accumulated ozone exposure in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) Study.

Ground-level ozone exposure poses a significant public health threat, linked to respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive decline. Emerging evidence suggests that DNA methylation (DNAm) alterations, a form of epigenetic modification, may contribute to these health effects. Here, we conducted an epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) involving 4500 adults aged 32-42 years from diverse populations across the United States to explore how recent (past year) and accumulated (past 14 years) ozone exposure relate to DNAm patterns. We identified six CpGs that reached epigenome-wide

Laboratory methods and quality assurance in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health Waves V and VI.

OBJECTIVES: Gerontological and population health sciences increasingly emphasize life-course, biosocial frameworks linking social environments to biological aging and disease processes, for which high-quality biological data are essential. We report on the collection, assay, and quality of aging-related biomarkers in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) Waves V and VI. METHODS: Staff collected blood specimens during in-home health exams, processed them locally, and shipped them to the lab for further processing, assay completion, and archiving. Analytes a

Social relationships and immune aging in early midlife: Evidence from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health.

Aging of the immune system is characterized by changes in the T-cell compartment, including a decrease in naïve T-cells and an increase in memory T-cells. Stress exposures are known to predict accelerated immune aging in older adults. However, social relationships, which are often linked to stress mechanisms, have not been widely studied in relation to these adaptive immune biomarkers, particularly in younger populations. We examined associations between social relationships, in terms of quantity (Social Network Index, Close Contacts Index) and quality of relationships (spouse/partner, friends

Why do young women get tested for sexually transmitted infections? Evidence from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health.

PURPOSE: Public health officials promote sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing as a method to reduce the morbidity of STIs. The purpose of this study was to examine what factors are associated with STI testing among young women across various types of STIs and to compare relative influences of factors across models. METHODS: A secondary data analysis of data from Add Health Wave III was conducted (n=2629). Explanatory factors highlighted in qualitative literature were operationalized and built into a logistic regression model used to predict testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis,

A Missense Variant in COMT Associated with Hearing Loss among Young Adults: The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health).

Hearing loss is a major public problem with a heritability of up to 70%. Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) encodes an enzyme that is highly expressed in sensory hair cells of the inner ear. The association between COMT and hearing loss has not been reported previously in nationally representative population-based studies. A regression linear model was used to estimate associations between the allele/genotype of COMT and self-reported hearing loss based on 13,403 individuals from Wave IV of the Add Health study, a nationally representative sample of multiethnic U.S. young adults. The inverse

Comparing cumulative index and factor analytic approaches to measuring maltreatment in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health.

Child maltreatment is a complex and multifaceted construct in need of advanced statistical techniques to improve its measurement. The current study compared the predictive utility of a cumulative index to a factor analytic approach for constructing a measure of maltreatment. Data were from Waves III and IV of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Wave III: n = 14,800; Wave IV: n = 12,288). As adults, participants retrospectively reported on their childhood experiences of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, supervisory neglect, and social se
