Bioactive compounds from natural resources against skin aging.

Skin aging involves degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM) in both the epidermal and dermal layers, it leaves visible signs on the surface of skin and the physical properties of the skin are modified. Chronological aging is due to passage of time, whereas premature aging occurred due to some environmental factors on skin produces visible signs such as irregular dryness, dark/light pigmentation, sallowness, severe atrophy, telangiectases, premalignant lesions, laxity, leathery appearance and deep wrinkling. There are several synthetic skincare cosmetics existing in the market to treat premat

Antiviral Potential of Natural Resources against Influenza Virus Infections.

Influenza is a severe contagious disease caused by influenza A and B viruses. The WHO estimates that annual outbreaks lead to 3-5 million severe infections of which approximately 10% lead to the death of the patient. While vaccination is the cornerstone of prevention, antiviral drugs represent the most important treatment option of acute infections. Only two classes of drugs are currently approved for the treatment of influenza in numerous countries: M2 channel blockers and neuraminidase inhibitors. In some countries, additional compounds such as the recently developed cap-dependent endonuclea

Promising Anti-Hepatitis C Virus Compounds from Natural Resources.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major worldwide problem, which involves approximately 170 million people. High morbidity of patients is caused by chronic infection, which leads to liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and other HCV-related diseases. The sustained virological response (SVR) has been markedly improved to be >90% by the current standard interferon (IFN)-free treatment regimens with a combination of direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) targeting the viral NS3 protease, NS5A multi-function protein and NS5B RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, compared with 50-70% of SVR rates

Harnessing Natural Resources for Advancements in Dengue Virus Treatment.

Dengue fever, caused by the Dengue virus (DENV) and transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, has become endemic in over 100 countries. Despite considerable research, there is a lack of specific drugs for clinical use against dengue. Hence, further exploration to identify antidengue compounds is essential. In recent years, natural products have gained attention for their antiviral properties. Plant-based medicines are particularly appealing due to their safety and low toxicity. This review summarizes natural compounds with potential antiviral activity against DENV, highlighting their mechanisms

Photodynamic inactivation of Gram-positive bacteria employing natural resources.

The aim of this paper was to investigate a collection of plant extracts from Argentina as a source of new natural photosensitizers (PS) to be used in Photodynamic Inactivation (PDI) of bacteria. A collection of plants were screened for phototoxicity upon the Gram-positive species Staphylococcus epidermidis. Three extracts turned out to be photoactive: Solanum verbascifolium flower, Tecoma stans flower and Cissus verticillata root. Upon exposure to a light dose of 55J/cm(2), they induced 4, 2 and 3logs decrease in bacterial survival, respectively. Photochemical characterisation of S. verbascifo

An Insight into Antihyperlipidemic Effects of Polysaccharides from Natural Resources.

Hyperlipidemia is a chronic metabolic disease caused by the abnormal metabolism of lipoproteins in the human body. Its main hazard is to accelerate systemic atherosclerosis, which causes cerebrovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease and thrombosis. At the same time, although the current hypolipidemic drugs have a certain therapeutic effect, they have side effects such as liver damage and digestive tract discomfort. Many kinds of polysaccharides from natural resources possess therapeutic effects on hyperlipidemia but still lack a comprehensive understanding. In this paper, the researc

Exploring natural microbial resources for the discovery of anti-malarial compounds.

Microorganisms in nature are highly diverse biological resources, which can be explored for drug discovery. Some countries including Brazil, Columbia, Indonesia, China, and Mexico, which are blessed with geographical uniqueness with diverse climates and display remarkable megabiodiversity, potentially provide microorganismal resources for such exploitation. In this review, as an example of drug discovery campaigns against tropical parasitic diseases utilizing microorganisms from such a megabiodiversity country, we summarize our past and on-going activities toward discovery of new antimalarials

Natural resources modulate the nexus between environmental shocks and human mobility.

In the context of natural resource degradation, migration can act as means of adaptation both for those leaving and those supported by remittances. Migration can also result from an inability to adapt in-situ, with people forced to move, sometimes to situations of worse or of the same exposure to environmental threats. The deleterious impacts of resource degradation have been proposed in some situations to limit the ability to move. In this contribution, we use remote sensed information coupled with population density data for continental Africa to assess quantitatively the prevalence of migra

SuperSweet--a resource on natural and artificial sweetening agents.

A vast number of sweet tasting molecules are known, encompassing small compounds, carbohydrates, d-amino acids and large proteins. Carbohydrates play a particularly big role in human diet. The replacement of sugars in food with artificial sweeteners is common and is a general approach to prevent cavities, obesity and associated diseases such as diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Knowledge about the molecular basis of taste may reveal new strategies to overcome diet-induced diseases. In this context, the design of safe, low-calorie sweeteners is particularly important. Here, we provide a comprehensiv

Zinc oxide/copper ferrite ferrofluids derived from natural resources for antifungal applications.

One of the serious global health issues is related to toxigenic fungi, especially Aspergillus flavus. To address this issue, it is crucial to develop eco-friendly and effective antifungal agents. Therefore, we develop zinc oxide/copper ferrite-soursop leaf extract nanocomposites as novel antifungal agents using a combination of sol-gel, coprecipitation, and mixing methods. Interestingly, the nanocomposites were modified into ferrofluids with varying mass of copper ferrite-soursop leaf extract to increase their stability and antifungal performance. Furthermore, this work employed natural resour

Natural resources, quantification, microbial bioconversion, and bioactivities of vitamin B12 for vegetarian diet.

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin with a complex chemical structure. It can participate in the synthesis and repair of DNA in the human body and plays an important role in regulating the nervous system. The deficiency of vitamin B12 will lead to megaloblastic anemia and neuropathy. Traditionally, animal foods have been the main dietary source of vitamin B12. However, this review points to certain plant sources (such as algae, mushrooms, fermented vegetables, and fermented beans) as viable vitamin B12 supplements for vegetarians. These sources validate our initial hypothesis that a plant-b

Fluoride availability from natural resources in The Gambia--implications for oral health care.

INTRODUCTION: Changing food patterns in combination with ineffective oral hygiene measures and insufficient bioavailability of fluoride from drinking water and other sources seem to impair the dental health status in developing countries, especially in the younger population. Therefore, preventive programmes in controlling dental caries progression should be based on local conditions. METHODS: For mapping the drinking water fluoride content throughout The Gambia, samples of water from rural community wells, public water taps, commercial mineral water, and from the Gambia-River were measured.

Illustrating the Effect of Small Molecules Derived from Natural Resources on Amyloid Peptides.

The onset of amyloidogenic diseases is associated with the misfolding and aggregation of proteins. Despite extensive research, no effective therapeutics are yet available to treat these chronic degenerative diseases. Targeting the aggregation of disease-specific proteins is regarded as a promising new approach to treat these diseases. In the past few years, rapid progress in this field has been made in vitro, in vivo, and in silico to generate potential drug candidates, ranging from small molecules to polymers to nanoparticles. Small molecular probes, mostly those derived from natural sources,

A natural resource. Prevalence of cadaver organs for transplantation and research.

To determine the prevalence of potential cadaver kidney, eye, and research-tissue donors in a tertiary referral hospital, the charts of 718 patients who died were studied. We found a potential kidney-donor rate of 2.4 per 100 hospital deaths, a potential eye-donor rate of 45.4 per 100 deaths, and a potential pancreas-donor rate of 26.5 per 100 deaths. In the study year, 20 potential cadaver kidney donors were projected, theoretically meeting the needs of the transplantation center. Recognized potential eye and pancreas donors were remarkably numerous. Effective education, surveillance, and pro

Dual α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitors: recent progress from natural and synthetic resources.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterised by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from insufficient insulin production or insulin resistance. Its global prevalence has surged, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with over 830 million affected. In recent years, dual inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase, the enzymes involved in the metabolism of complex polysaccharides, has gained visibility in anti-diabetic medication research. The inhibition of these enzymes is responsible for reducing postprandial hyperglycemia. FDA-approved drugs, acarbose, vo
