Annie Dodge Wauneka was an activist and public servant whose decades long career focused extensively on improving the welfare of the Navajo Community. She campaigned to increase education among those living on the Navajo Reservation through working on the Tribal Council, completing personal visits, and producing educational material to improve hygiene. Annie's biggest fight was against tuberculosis. By bridging old traditions with new medicine, Annie encouraged people to seek treatment from hospitals and remain there throughout treatment. This reduced mortality significantly while closing the

Of the three religious healing traditions that coexist within the contemporary Navajo health care system, the Native American Church (NAC) and Pentecostal Christianity are more actively involved in the treatment of alcohol and substance abuse than is Traditional Navajo healing. This article examines these two more recent healing traditions as religious responses to the contemporary Navajo crisis of alcohol and substance abuse as well as to socioeconomic changes. These traditions offer new kinds of power, social networks, and personal meaning that facilitate a transformation of self, a revitali

To date, some genetic studies offer medical benefits but lack a clear pathway to benefit for people from underrepresented backgrounds. Historically, Indigenous people, including the Diné (Navajo people), have raised concerns about the lack of benefits, misuse of DNA samples, lack of consultation, and ignoring of cultural and traditional ways of knowing. Shortly after the Navajo Nation Human Research Review Board was established in 1996, the Navajo Nation recognized growing concerns about genetic research, and in 2002 they established a moratorium on human genetic research studies. The moratori

BACKGROUND: American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) people in the United States experience cancer disparities, but little is known about cancer patterns specific to each Tribal Nation. This study describes cancer incidence (2014-2018), trends (1998-2018), and stage of diagnosis across the Navajo Nation, one of the largest sovereign tribal nations worldwide.
METHODS: Cases from six Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah counties covering most of the Navajo Nation were identified by population-based cancer registries and linked with Indian Health Services patient registrations. Cancer incidence and stage

The findings of a health consumer survey of 309 Navajo families in three areas of the Navajo Reservation are reported. The survey shows that access to facilities and lack of safe water and sanitary supplies are continuing problems for these families. The families show consistent use of Indian Health Service providers, particularly nurses, pharmacists and physicians, as well as traditional Navajo medicine practitioners. Only incidental utilization of private medical services is reported. Extended waiting times and translation from English to Navajo are major concerns in their contacts with prov

RATIONALE: Navajo children living on the reservation have high rates of asthma prevalence and severity. Environmental influences may contribute to asthma on the Navajo Nation and are inadequately understood.
OBJECTIVES: We performed a comprehensive, integrative literature review to determine the environmental factors that may contribute to increased asthma prevalence and severity among Navajo children living on the reservation.
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in four databases regarding the environmental risk factors for asthma in Navajo children living on the reservation. Relevan

The uranium industry in the American Southwest has had profoundly negative impacts on American Indian communities. Navajo workers experienced significant health problems, including lung cancer and nonmalignant respiratory diseases, and psychosocial problems, such as depression and anxiety. There were four uranium processing mills and approximately 1,200 uranium mines on the Navajo Nation's over 27,000 square miles. In this paper, a chronology is presented of how uranium mining and milling impacted the lives of Navajo workers and their families. Local community leaders organized meetings across

Traditional medicine men coexist with physicians and hospitals on the 25,000 square mile Navajo Indian Reservation. Most seriously ill Navajos utilize both systems of health care. This natural experiment of coexistence emphasizes several general characteristics of all healing. Traditional ceremonies are successful because they are integrated into Navajo belief systems and meet needs of sick people not dealt with by the available Western medicine. Physicians and other healers simply remove obstacles to the body's restoration of homeostasis or, as the Navajo say, to harmony. Reductionism limits

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive smoke-free laws are effective at protecting non-smokers and reducing tobacco use, yet they are not widely adopted by tribal governments.
METHODS: A series of smoke-free policy initiatives on the Navajo Nation, beginning in 2008, were reviewed to identify key issues, successes and setbacks.
RESULTS: It has been essential that proposed policies acknowledge the Navajo people's spiritual use of nát'oh, a sacred plant used for gift-giving, medicinal purposes and traditional ceremonies, while simultaneously discouraging a secular use of commercial tobacco. Concern that sm

INTRODUCTION: Developmental Delay (DD) is highly common in American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN; Indigenous) toddlers and leads to high numbers of AI/AN children who eventually need special education services. AI/AN children are 2.89 times more likely to receive special education compared to other children in the U.S., yet developmental disorders are more frequently under diagnosed and untreated in AI/AN infants and toddlers. DD, which can be identified as early as toddlerhood, can lead to negative impacts on developmental trajectories, school readiness, and long-term health. Signs of DD c

INTRODUCTION: Perceived social support is a psychological construct that is used to describe the 'perception of adequacy' of the support being provided by a person's social network. Higher perceived social support has been linked to multiple benefits across numerous studies over the past several decades and among multiple populations. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) is a 12-item scale to assess the construct of perceived social support. The instrument has been translated to approximately 35 languages and dialects, but it has rarely been translated into tribal lan

Programs designed to promote mental health of the children of the Navajo Indian Tribe bear priority status. 1. Among these programs are the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale, a psychological and physical assessment of the neonate. It is designed to enhance bonding as well as identify and treat neonates affected by intrauterine alcohol or other drug use of the mother during pregnancy. 2. Description of a Fetal Alcohol Syndrome project enabling over 90% of those enrolled to refrain from using alcohol during their pregnancies. Many alcohol counsellors are employed for the entire Rese

A follow-up study was conducted on the infant and child-feeding programs to determine the prevalence of protein and calorie malnutrition among preschool Navajo Indian children. These programs were introduced on the reservation in 1968. The numbers of patients admitted to the Public Health Service Indian Hospital, in Tuba City, Arizona, with deficits in weight for their chronological ages, marasmus, and kwashiorkor were compared during two 5-year-periods, 1963 to 1967 and 1969 to 1973. The results show an 18% reduction in the total number of patients under 5 years of age admitted to the hospita

IMPORTANCE: Nutrition insecurity is a major driver of poor cardiovascular health in Indigenous communities. Medically tailored meals that reclaim traditional foods may improve heart failure outcomes and quality of life. Community-based participatory methods were used to design Medically Utilized Tailored Traditional Foods to Optimize Nutrition in Heart Failure (MUTTON-HF), a culturally and medically tailored meal program incorporating traditional Navajo foods and recipes.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of a culturally and medically tailored meal program on the incidence of hospitalizati

Accurate diagnosis is essential for accessing emerging gene-targeted treatments for inherited retinal diseases (IRDs), but many minoritised communities face additional barriers to diagnosis. This scoping review synthesised clinical studies on the prevalence and diagnosis of IRDs among Indigenous Peoples worldwide. Medline, Embase, Global Health, Informit and CINAHL were searched on December 4, 2023. We included articles reporting Indigenous Peoples with IRDs from all global regions published between 1974 and 2023; 73 studies (581 cases) of IRDs in Indigenous Peoples from 24 countries were incl

People with skin of color constitute a wide range of racial and ethnic groups-including Africans, African Americans, African Caribbeans, Chinese and Japanese, Native American Navajo Indians, and certain groups of fair-skinned persons (eg, Indians, Pakistanis, Arabs), and Hispanics. It has been predicted that people with skin of color will constitute a majority of the United States and international populations in the 21st century. There is not a wealth of data on racial and ethnic differences in skin and hair structure, physiology, and function. What studies do exist involve small patient popu

BACKGROUND: American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) people represent a culturally diverse people group within the United States. AI/AN people experience some of the most severe health disparities in the United States, including behavioral health. A quarter of AI/AN people in the United States live on tribal lands, experiencing significant barriers to mental health resources and broadband infrastructure for telehealth. We developed Amplifying Resilience Over Restricted Internet Access (ARORA)-a mobile health (mHealth) smartphone app, promoting mindfulness practices and community building through

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have evolved from novel therapies for type 2 diabetes mellitus into widely used treatments for obesity and metabolic disease. Their origins can be traced to the Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum), a venomous lizard native to the deserts of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. The discovery of exendin-4, a peptide isolated from the venom of the Gila monster, led to the subsequent development of longer acting GLP-1RAs. Long before its contribution to modern medicine would be recognized, the Gila monster was revered in Navajo
