Needle and syringe sharing among Iranian drug injectors.

OBJECTIVE: The role of needle and syringe sharing behavior of injection drug users (IDUs) in spreading of blood-borne infections - specially HIV/AIDS - is well known. However, very little is known in this regard from Iran. The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence and associates of needle and syringe sharing among Iranian IDUs. METHODS: In a secondary analysis of a sample of drug dependents who were sampled from medical centers, prisons and streets of the capitals of 29 provinces in the Iran in 2007, 2091 male IDUs entered. Socio-demographic data, drug use data and high risk behavi

Correlates of needle sharing among injection drug users.

OBJECTIVES: The sharing of contaminated injection equipment is the primary mode of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission for injection drug users. This study examined demographic factors, life events, and drug use practices that are potential risk factors for sharing injection equipment. METHODS: Between February 1988 and March 1989, 2921 active injection drug users were interviewed and questioned about their backgrounds, life-styles, and patterns of injection drug use. RESULTS: Of 2524 participants who reported injecting drugs within the 6 months prior to study enrollment, 70.4% r

Amsterdam's drug policy and its implications for controlling needle sharing.

In summary, it can be stated that Amsterdam has a wide variety of helping modalities. Approximately 70 percent of the city's 7,000 drug addicts are in contact with this helping system. In The Netherlands, no evidence could be found to support the fear that low-threshold methadone programs keep addicts away from drug-free treatment. Figure 1 shows that the number of addicts entering drug-free treatment doubled in the period 1981-85 (most popular has been the drug-free aftercare). This is even more striking since the estimated number of addicts did not increase in that same period. So, instead o

Potential for hepatitis C transmission among non-needle/syringe sharing Sheffield drug injectors through the sharing of drug preparation paraphernalia.

This study aimed to investigate possible means by which hepatitis C virus (HCV) might be transmitted between drug injecting individuals without the sharing of needles and syringes. A questionnaire-based survey of 143 (out of 287) attendees was conducted at an Infectious Diseases Unit-based HCV clinic. Those patients (all of whom were positive for antibodies to HCV) who asked about risk activities and those that admitted to a history of recreational drug injecting were questioned in detail about their past and current drug preparation practices. Ten per cent denied any history of needle and/or

Needle and syringe coverage per injection and factors associated with needle sharing among clients of the Stockholm Needle and Syringe Program, 2013-2023.

BACKGROUND: Needle and Syringe Programs (NSP) are a cornerstone of harm reduction, yet evidence on whether they adequately meet injection-related needs and reduce needle sharing in real-world settings, particularly where NSP were introduced late, remains limited. We examined needles to injection coverage and predictors of needle sharing among clients of the Stockholm NSP between 2013 and 2023. METHODS: Using data from a national clinical monitoring system, baseline and repeated follow-up surveys were linked to service data. Injection coverage was assessed by comparing self-reported injection

The association between acculturation and needle sharing among Puerto Rican injection drug users.

BACKGROUND: Base-line data from a community-based HIV outreach effort serving Puerto Rican injection drug users (IDUs) in Massachusetts identified that approximately half of their clients were born on the mainland and half on the island. METHODS: Logistic regression methods examined the relationship between place of birth, primary language spoken, primary residence of family and needle sharing for a sample of 200 Puerto Rican IDUs residing in Massachusetts. Focus groups were used to interpret quantitative findings. RESULTS: A logistic regression model indicated that Puerto Rican IDUs born on

A preliminary ethnographic decision tree model of injection drug users' (IDUs) needle sharing.

This article presents a preliminary ethnographic decision tree model of the needle sharing and HIV risk decision-making processes common to injection drug users (IDUs) in Houston, Texas. Ethnographic tree decision modeling is a rigorous qualitative method used to understand and predict how and why people in certain groups do things the way they do. The model was developed from data collected from focus group and individual interviews and naturalistic observations. The research participants were White, African-American and Latino male and female IDUs. The model presents IDUs' needle-sharing rou

Syringe Sharing Among a Prospective Cohort of Street-Involved Youth: Implications for Needle Distribution Programs.

The sharing of previously used syringes is associated with the transmission of Hepatitis C and HIV. This longitudinal study examines syringe borrowing and syringe lending within a prospective cohort of street-involved youth in Vancouver, Canada. From September 2005 to May 2014, data were collected from the At-Risk Youth Study, a cohort of street-involved youth age 14-26 at enrollment, and analyzed using generalized estimating equations. Among 505 participants, 142 (28.1%) reported syringe borrowing and 132 (26.1%) reported syringe lending during the study period. In separate multivariable anal

Depressive symptoms, drug network, and their synergistic effect on needle-sharing behavior among street injection drug users.

In this study, we examined the relationship between depressive symptoms and needle-sharing behavior in a community sample of intravenous drug users (N = 499) in Baltimore, Maryland. Based on the polytomous logistic regression, higher depressive symptoms were positively associated both with needle sharing after cleaning with bleach and with needle sharing without first cleaning with bleach at the bivariate analyses. This relationship remained significant (OR = 1.66) even after adjusting for demographic characteristics, life events, drug use patterns, and social and drug networks. A significant

Age and sharing of needle injection equipment in a cohort of Massachusetts injection drug users: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C infection (HCV) among individuals aged 15-24 years has increased in Massachusetts, likely due to injection drug use. The prevalence of injection equipment sharing (sharing) and its association with age was examined in a cohort of out-of-treatment Massachusetts substance users. METHODS: This analysis included baseline data from a behavioral intervention with substance users. Younger and older (<25 versus ≥ 25 years) injection drug users were compared on demographic characteristics, substance use practices, including factors present during the most recent sharing event (

HIV prevalence and correlates of receptive needle sharing among injection drug users in the Mexican-U.s. border city of Tijuana.

Injection drug use is a growing but understudied problem in Tijuana, a city situated on the northwestern Mexico-U.S border. The authors studied factors associated with receptive needle sharing in an effort to inform prevention activities. In 2003, street-recruited injection drug users (IDUs) in Tijuana underwent interviews on injection risk behaviors and rapid HIV antibody tests. Logistic regression was used to identify correlates of receptive needle sharing at the last injection episode. Of 402 IDUs, 87.6% were male; the median age was 34. HIV prevalence was 4.01% (95% CI: 2.29-6.51). One thi
