Because serious nosocomial diseases can be transmitted by needlestick injuries, a retrospective review of needlestick injuries was conducted for a period of 2.5 years at a major university teaching hospital. The objective was to determine the needlestick injury rate among employees of the Department of Ophthalmology versus the other departments. Ophthalmologists had the highest incidence per person of needle injuries among physicians. Retina and strabismus surgeons were at higher risk than anterior segment surgeons.

BACKGROUND: Surgeons in training are at high risk for needlestick injuries. The reporting of such injuries is a critical step in initiating early prophylaxis or treatment.
METHODS: We surveyed surgeons in training at 17 medical centers about previous needlestick injuries. Survey items inquired about whether the most recent injury was reported to an employee health service or involved a "high-risk" patient (i.e., one with a history of infection with human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B or hepatitis C, or injection-drug use); we also asked about the perceived cause of the injury and the su

During the course of a year, there are many healthcare workers nationwide who sustain sharps injuries whilst carrying out their duties. Staff who work in the Accident and Emergency (A & E) units are no different from anyone else in this respect. The emotional cost of such an accident cannot be calculated, whereas the financial costs can. This article aims to show how the cost of an injury to a member of staff can be calculated, thus allowing a manager to assess the financial implications of sharps injuries to their department. In the absence of access to an Occupational Health (OH) department,

OBJECTIVES: Needlestick injuries in healthcare workers are common. They are one of the main ways of transmitting large numbers of pathogenic micro-organisms in healthcare institutions. The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence and circumstances of needlestick injuries in a selected population of nurses from the city of Poznań and the Wielkopolskie province.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was filled in by 232 active nurses with secondary education, studying externally at the Medical University in Poznań. The sample was representative of nursing specialisations and workplaces

Anesthesiologists are at risk for acquiring blood-borne infections through contact with blood or body fluids. From prospective studies, the greatest risk of transmission is through a percutaneous exposure such as needlestick injury. Personal protective equipment such as gloves and gowns do not completely prevent these exposures. Although educational efforts can reduce the frequency of recapping of needles, they generally have not decreased the incidence of needlesticks. Therefore, in addition to practicing universal precautions, anesthesiologists can attempt to reduce their risk of needlestick

There are a variety of biologics, vaccines, antibiotics, and hormones used in animal agriculture. Depending upon the procedure or pharmaceutical used, accidental injections or product exposures can result in mild to severe injuries. Needlestick injury (NSI) prevention, research, and education for veterinarians and agriculture workers is limited. The objective of this study was to collect and review published case reports and case series/surveys on human needlestick exposure to veterinary biologics and to summarize needlestick prevention strategies for agricultural workers/veterinarians. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that multiple needlestick injuries in hospital employees may be due to intrinsic deficits in hand dexterity.
DESIGN: A case-control study comparing employees with multiple reported needlestick injuries to those with none. Hand dexterity was tested using the Purdue Pegboard Test, a standardized validated test of hand dexterity.
SETTING: A 300-bed, acute care teaching hospital.
PARTICIPANTS: Fifteen hospital employees who sustained four or more injuries were compared to 19 controls.
RESULTS: No differences were detected in hand dexterity between the case and

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between working conditions and needlestick injury among registered nurses. We also describe needle use and needlestick injuries according to nursing position, workplace, and specialty.
DESIGN: Three-wave longitudinal survey conducted between November 2002 and April 2004.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A probability sample of 2,624 actively licensed registered nurses from 2 states in the United States. Follow-up rates for waves 2 and 3 were 85% and 86%, respectively. Respondents who had worked as a nurse during the past year (n=2,273) prior to wave 1 were incl

Sharps injuries are a major cause of transmission of hepatitis B and C viruses and human immunodeficiency virus in health-care workers. To determine the yearly incidence and causes of sharps injuries in health-care workers in Taiwan, we conducted a questionnaire survey in a total of 8645 health care workers, including physicians, nurses, laboratory technicians, and cleaners, from teaching hospitals of various sizes. The reported incidence of needlestick and other sharps injuries was 1.30 and 1.21 per person in the past 12 months, respectively. Of most recent episodes of needlestick/sharps inju

Prison officers face multiple occupational hazards including needlestick injuries, which may result in the transmission of blood-borne viral infections. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of needlestick injuries, the circumstances under which needlestick injuries occur and the responses of injured prison officers. Cross-sectional data were collected from prison officers in two Australian jurisdictions between January and May 2006, using a self-report questionnaire. Descriptive analyses were conducted. Of 246 prison officers who completed the survey, two-thirds had found needles and syri

PURPOSE: To describe the prevalence and characteristics of needlestick injuries (NSI) in student nurses in Taiwan.
METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was completed by 931 student nurses from 16 hospitals randomly selected from the 132 accredited hospitals.
RESULTS: The questionnaire was completed by 708 of 931 students who were contacted for participation in this study. NSI during internship was reported by 61.9% (438/708) of students, of whom 14.2% (62/438) made a formal report. The majority (70.1%) of NSI occurred in the patient's room. Hollow-bored needles contributed to half (219

BACKGROUND: Needlestick injuries (NSI) of healthcare personnel (HCP) are work-related accidents with a risk of transmission of blood-borne human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV, HCV). Along with preventive measures to avoid accidental NSI, preventing the risk and diagnosis of an infection from NSI are given a high priority. Thus, follow-up monitoring of NSI is of great interest.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the follow-up monitoring after NSI with respect to early recognition of transmission of HIV, HCV and HBV as well as adherence and psychological burden of HCP.

BACKGROUND: The prevention of needlestick injuries (NSIs) in nurses employed in Emergency Departments (EDs) represents a special issue for healthcare organizations globally. Stressful working conditions, lack of organizational arrangements and lack of supporting one another at work, may contribute to increase the risk of NSIs.
METHODS: We conducted an observational study to analyze: 1) the effectiveness of organizational interventions to minimize the occurrence of NSIs in ED nurses; 2) to measure the impact of such interventions on the safety budget.
RESULTS: The occurrence of NSIs detected

Livestock producers and their employees sometimes experience unintentional needlestick injury (NSI) while vaccinating or injecting medications into animals. There is little published regarding the medical complications that can develop from this occupational exposure. The objectives of this study were to (1) perform a retrospective review of animal-related NSIs treated at a tertiary medical center of a rural state; and (2) review the risks of NSI and measures to decrease their occurrence. Medical records of patients with NSI related to animal injection were identified from the University of Io

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by over 20 species of Leishmania. Transmission is mainly via sandfly bites infected with promastigotes, through the placenta from mother to child, by sexual intercourse, blood transfusion, and occupationally acquired by direct inoculation into the skin. Clinical manifestations vary from self-limited cutaneous disease to a life-threatening visceral infection. In November 2021, a 29-year-old otherwise healthy dermatology resident suffered an accidental needlestick injury while performing a biopsy on a patient with a presumptive diagnosis of an infectio

An analysis of 2646 needlestick injuries in hospitals in the Greater Manchester area between April 1992 and April 1999 was carried out. Ten per cent of members of staff injured in these incidents had never been vaccinated against hepatitis B virus (HBV) and 27% of those who had been vaccinated had no anti-HBs (< 10 IU/L). Although few health care workers were at risk of transmission of HBV through needlestick incidents in this study (0.6% (12/2084) of all source patients were HBsAg positive; 9 HBeAg positive, 7 anti-HBe positive), the large number of members of staff who were not protected fro

In a mixed-mode survey of all 1970-80 female graduates of all US veterinary colleges, information was obtained regarding several health, personal and occupational factors including data on occupational needlestick events. Among the 2,532 survey respondents, 1,620 reported one or more needlesticks after graduation from veterinary college (64.0% of all respondents). A total of 2,663 stick events were reported, although the descriptions of each puncture event varied in quality/completeness, probably due in large part to their retrospective nature. Substances most often injected include vaccines,

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: This study explored how the threat of needlestick/sharps injuries affects stress and anxiety among dental, dental hygiene, and dental assisting students in accredited US programs. It also aimed to identify contributing factors and assess potential educational interventions.
METHODS: Following IRB exemption, a mixed-methods survey was distributed between April 17th and July 7th, 2025, via program directors nationally and administered through Qualtrics. The survey included Likert-scale and open-ended questions assessing students' anxiety, stress, injury history, confidence, a
