Neisseria Mucosa: A New Urinary Tract Pathogen?

The most common complication of vesicoureteral reflux is urinary tract infection. We report a case of a urinary tract infection in a child with severe vesicoureteral reflux, caused by Neisseria mucosa, usually considered to be a commensal inhabitant of the oro- or nasopharynx.

Severe aortic regurgitation due to Neisseria mucosa endocarditis.

A rare occurrence of Neisseria mucosa endocarditis on a native aortic valve not known to be diseased is reported. Despite vigorous antibiotic therapy, severe aortic regurgitation developed necessitating aortic valve replacement. At operation, the right coronary cusp was retracted with two small nodules attached to its edge and the non-coronary cusp was perforated. Neisseria mucosa endocarditis is very rare, and involves abnormal mitral or prosthetic valves predominantly. Infection of a native aortic valve, with no known history of disease, is exceptional.

Neisseria mucosa Peritonitis in the Setting of a Migrated Intrauterine Device.

Peritonitis is a major complication in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, often requiring a switch to hemodialysis (HD). Common sources of bacterial peritonitis are touch contamination and PD catheter-related infection. Intra-abdominal pathology is a less common cause of peritonitis in PD patients, and rarely is Neisseria mucosa the causative organism. We present an uncommon case of N. mucosa peritonitis in a 30-year-old African American female patient treated with nocturnal intermittent PD. The infection occurred in the setting of a translocated intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) in the

The Human Microbiome as a Focus of Antibiotic Discovery: Neisseria mucosa Displays Activity Against Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections are a serious global health problem. This organism has developed disturbing levels of antibiotic resistance, resulting in the need for new approaches to prevent and treat gonorrhea. The genus Neisseria also includes several members of the human microbiome that live in close association with an array of microbial partners in a variety of niches. We designed an undergraduate antibiotic discovery project to examine a panel of nonpathogenic Neisseria species for their ability to produce antimicrobial secondary metabolites. Five strains belonging to the N. mucosa sp

Co-infection with Neisseria mucosa in a patient with tuberculous otitis media.

Tuberculous otitis media (TOM) is a rare manifestation caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis with low incidence rates among extrapulmonary tuberculosis cases. Diagnosis is often delayed because of the presence of several clinical manifestations and the high prevalence of secondary bacterial infections. Few reports have attributed secondary bacterial infections in patients with TOM to commensal Neisseria. Thus, understanding the pathogenic mechanisms and clinical features of commensal Neisseria is important, considering its recent presentation as an infection-causing pathogen. Neisseria mucosa i

In vivo adaptation and persistence of Neisseria meningitidis within the nasopharyngeal mucosa.

Neisseria meningitidis (Nme) asymptomatically colonizes the human nasopharynx, yet can initiate rapidly-progressing sepsis and meningitis in rare instances. Understanding the meningococcal lifestyle within the nasopharyngeal mucosa, a phase of infection that is prerequisite for disease, has been hampered by the lack of animal models. Herein, we compare mice expressing the four different human carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecules (CEACAMs) that can bind the neisserial Opa protein adhesins, and find that expression of human CEACAM1 is necessary and sufficient to establish int

Pulmonary cavitation due to Neisseria mucosa in a child with chronic neutropenia.

A case of spontaneous pulmonary abscess with cavitation caused by Neisseria mucosa in a chronically neutropenic child is reported. Neisseria mucosa was isolated as the sole pathogen from a percutaneous needle aspirate. It appears that the clinical course of the pulmonary lesion was indolent. Interestingly, a gallium scan was diagnostic for pulmonary abscess even though the child was neutropenic.

Neisseria mucosa - A rare cause of peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Neisseria mucosa is a gram negative diplococcus belonging to the genus Neisseria found commonly in the upper respiratory tract. It is typically a commensal organism when it is parasitic on oral and nasal mucosa. To our knowledge, it does not cause disease in healthy individuals with normal immunity, but can be pathogenic in those with impaired immune function or change in bacterial colonization site. Neisseria mucosa has been reported to cause bacterial meningitis, conjunctivitis, pneumonia, endocarditis, peritonitis and urethritis. However, peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis

Neisseria mucosa: A not so Benign Culprit of urinary tract infection: A case report.

Neisseria mucosa is saprophytic human commensal but reported as a causative agent in a couple of urinary tract infections [UTI] in susceptible individuals. In the present case, a young girl with long standing neurological problems presented with bladder outlet obstruction and fever. Her urine culture yielded Neisseria mucosa which was susceptible to broad spectrum penicillins, aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, ciprofloxacin, and azithromycin. She recovered with suitable dosage of amoxicillin clavulanic acid and was discharged. Isolation of N. mucosa here becomes clinically significant as this g

Neisseria mucosa Urinary Tract Infection in a Neonate With Posterior Urethral Valves: A Case Report.

Neisseria mucosa is a Gram-negative diplococcus that usually colonizes the upper respiratory tract and is generally regarded as a commensal organism. It has, nevertheless, been implicated as an opportunistic pathogen in bacteremia, endocarditis, septic arthritis, meningitis, and peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis; urinary tract infection (UTI) remains exceptionally rare. We report a UTI caused by N. mucosa in a 24-day-old male neonate with posterior urethral valves (PUVs), who presented with frank pyuria for 10 days. Direct Gram staining of urine revealed Gram-negative diplococci with

Regulation of Th-1 T cell-dominated immunity to Neisseria meningitidis within the human mucosa.

Neisseria meningitidis is commonly carried asymptomatically in the upper respiratory tract and only occasionally invades the bloodstream and meninges to cause disease. Naturally acquired immunity appears protective but the nature of the cellular immune response within the mucosa is uncertain. We show that following in vitro stimulation with N. meningitidis serogroup B (MenB) antigens, approximately 66% of the dividing mucosal CD4(+)CD45RO(+) memory population express the Th1-associated IL18-R while the remainder express CRTH2, a Th2-associated marker. The pro-inflammatory bias of this anti-Men

Lactobacillus crispatus inhibits growth of Gardnerella vaginalis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae on a porcine vaginal mucosa model.

BACKGROUND: The vaginal microbiota can impact the susceptibility of women to bacterial vaginosis (BV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). BV is characterized by depletion of Lactobacillus spp., an overgrowth of anaerobes (often dominated by Gardnerella vaginalis) and a pH > 4.5. BV is associated with an increased risk of acquiring STIs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. While these associations have been identified, the molecular mechanism(s) driving the risk of infections are unknown. An ex vivo porcine vaginal mucosal model (PVM) was developed to explore the mechanistic role of Lactoba

Neisseria gonorrhoeae uses cellular proteins CXCL10 and IL8 to enhance HIV-1 transmission across cervical mucosa.

PROBLEM: Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) infection has been shown to increase sexual transmission of HIV-1. However, the mechanism of NG-induced enhanced HIV-1 transmission is unknown. METHODS: (a) The cervical tissues were exposed to NG, and cytokine induction was monitored by measuring cytokine proteins in culture supernatants and cytokine mRNAs in tissues. (b) Transcription and replication of HIV-1 in TZM-bl, U1, and ACH2 cells were measured by Beta-Gal activity and p24 proteins in the supernatant, respectively. (c) HIV-1 transmission was assayed in an organ culture system by measuring transmit

Airway Mucus Restricts Neisseria meningitidis Away from Nasopharyngeal Epithelial Cells and Protects the Mucosa from Inflammation.

Neisseria meningitidis is an inhabitant of the nasopharynx, from which it is transmitted from person to person or disseminates in blood and becomes a harmful pathogen. In this work, we addressed colonization of the nasopharyngeal niche by focusing on the interplay between meningococci and the airway mucus that lines the mucosa of the host. Using Calu-3 cells grown in air interface culture (cells grown with the apical domain facing air), we studied meningococcal colonization of the mucus and the host response. Our results suggested that N. meningitidis behaved like commensal bacteria in mucus,

Synergistic Effect of the Mucosa-Friendly Agents Berberine and Tea Tree Oil on Mucosal Protection Against Neisseria gonorrhoeae in an In Vitro T84 Cell Mucosa Model.

Introduction:Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a bacterium responsible for gonorrhea, can spread through oral sex, causing pharyngeal gonorrhea, which is also a leading cause of urethritis in outpatient clinics. This study investigated whether tea tree oil (TTO) alone or in combination with other natural products could serve as an effective alternative to chlorhexidine in preventing the spread of oral gonorrhea. Methods: An in vitro model was developed using T84 epithelial cells as a mucosal layer and Neisseria gonorrhoeae strain MS11. The study assessed the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), bacter
