Nematocera (Ceratopogonidae, Psychodidae, Simuliidae and Culicidae) and control methods.

The biology, veterinary importance and control of certain Nematocera are described and discussed. Culicoides spp. (family Ceratopogonidae) transmit the arboviruses of bluetongue (BT), African horse sickness (AHS), bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) and Akabane. Some other arboviruses have been isolated from these species, while fowl pox has been transmitted experimentally by Culicoides. These insects are vectors of the parasitic protozoans Leucocytozoon caulleryi and Haemoproteus nettionis, and the parasitic nematodes Onchocerca gutturosa, O. gibsoni and O. cervicalis. They also cause recurrent summ

[A case of urogenital myiasis caused by Psychoda albipennis (Diptera: Nematocera)].

Myiasis which is a parasitic disease of humans and vertebrates, is caused by dipterous fly larvae feeding on the host's necrotic or living tissue. Although infestation by fly larvae is much more prevalent in animals, it occurs relatively frequently in humans in rural, tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and America. Myiasis is usually associated with poor general health and hygiene, restricted mobility and ulcerating lesions. The pathophysiology of the human infection differs depending on the fly species and where the larvae are located. It could be external or internal, and the invasio

Clogmia albipunctata (Nematocera; Psychodidae) as the Etiologic Agent of Myiasis: True or False?

Clogmia albipunctata, known as drain fly, is a non-hematophagous insect of the Psychodidae family with worldwide distribution, particularly in tropical and temperate areas. It can be found near sewer drains, sewage treatment plants, plant pots, swamps, and any other place containing decaying or moist organic matter. It has been introduced in several publications as the causative agent of myiasis in humans. A case presentation, together with a compilation of findings from a database, including 51 scientific publications in the literature, allowed us to overview critically in detail the variable

Optomotor Reactions Reveal Polarization Sensitvity in the Zika Virus Transmitting Yellow Fever Mosquito Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (Diptera; Nematocera).

In polarization-sensitive insect species an orthogonal arrangement of photoreceptive microvilli is a characteristic feature. However, mosquito eyes had not revealed this feature, and polarization sensitivity (PS) was considered to be non-existent in them. Recently, however, gravid Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti females were found to possess PS, sequels of which could be demonstrated only in the absence of chemicals emitted by conspecifics. Therefore, PS in Ae. aegypti, unlike that of other aquatic insects, apparently does not play a dominant role in locating water bodies, and is difficult to demons

Detection of Plasmodium in Anopheles spp (Diptera: Nematocera: Culicidae) using molecular biology techniques: a systematic review.

This study aims to find evidence of the effectiveness of molecular biology techniques in detecting Plasmodium in Anopheles spp mosquitoes. This systematic review was based on the PRISMA 2020 protocol. It was carried out in five electronic databases (LILACS, PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, and Web of Science, with published studies in health and interdisciplinary areas) in addition to complementary research on Google Scholar. Studies that used molecular biology techniques to detect and evaluate Plasmodium in anopheles (the results of which determined the type of Plasmodium in the samples) were included

Arboviruses in Free-Ranging Birds and Hematophagous Arthropods (Diptera, Nematocera) from Forest Remnants and Urbanized Areas of an Environmental Protection Area in the Amazon Biome.

The rapid and disorderly urbanization in the Amazon has resulted in the insertion of forest fragments into cities, causing the circulation of arboviruses, which can involve hematophagous arthropods and free-ranging birds in the transmission cycles in urban environments. This study aimed to evaluate the circulation of arboviruses in free-ranging birds and hematophagous arthropods captured in an Environmental Protection Area in the Belem metropolitan area, Brazil. Birds were captured using mist nets, and hematophagous arthropods were collected using a human protected attraction technique and lig

THE ORIGIN OF AN ORGAN: PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF EVOLUTIONARY INNOVATION IN THE DIGESTIVE TRACT OF FLIES (INSECTA: DIPTERA).

The cardia, a prominent digestive tract organ consisting of several specialized cell types, occurs throughout the "higher" or muscoid flies, division Schizophora of order Diptera. Phylogenetic analysis of cellular organization in 65 insect species from 36 families indicates that this organ originated within the order Diptera from ancestrally undifferentiated tissues. "Lower" flies, suborder "Nematocera," display little or no epithelial cell specialization at the corresponding site. Scorpionflies of the outgroup order Mecoptera are similarly unspecialized. Intermediate levels of cellular specia

Evaluating soybean planting date and at-planting insecticide as a management strategy for Resseliella maxima (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae).

Soybean gall midge (Resseliella maxima Gagné) was confirmed in 2019 as a new species in the Midwestern United States. It is known to occur in seven states (Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota) and can cause up to 100% yield loss in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) for the first 30 m from the field edge. Field and greenhouse observations indicate R. maxima infests soybean stems through fissures at the base of the plant during early vegetative growth stages. Given the importance of plant stage for infestation and the limited knowledge on chemical control,

Bridging germplasm and mechanisms: screening for resistance and decoding defense strategies against rice gall midge (Orseolia oryzae Wood-Mason) in rice.

From 4006 rice accessions, this study identified 20 highly resistant accessions against the rice gall midge and revealed that their resistance is closely associated with morphological and physiological traits, thus providing critical and diverse resources and insights for resistance breeding. The Asian rice gall midge (RGM, Orseolia oryzae Wood-Mason) is a major rice pest causing substantial yield losses. Its larvae parasitize basal meristematic tissues of rice shoots, inducing hollow, tube‑like galls known as "silver shoots." Host plant resistance represents the most viable and economical str

Adhesive latching and legless leaping in small, worm-like insect larvae.

Jumping is often achieved using propulsive legs, yet legless leaping has evolved multiple times. We examined the kinematics, energetics and morphology of long-distance jumps produced by the legless larvae of gall midges (Asphondylia sp.). They store elastic energy by forming their body into a loop and pressurizing part of their body to form a transient 'leg'. They prevent movement during elastic loading by placing two regions covered with microstructures against each other, which likely serve as a newly described adhesive latch. Once the latch releases, the transient 'leg' launches the body in

Anthropophagy and aggregation behaviour of the sandfly Phlebotomus argentipes in Sri Lanka.

The visceral leishmaniasis (VL) vector Phlebotomus argentipes Annandale & Brunetti is widely distributed throughout the Indian sub-continent and S.E. Asia. The absence of VL in areas such as Sri Lanka has been attributed to the zoophilic nature of P.argentipes, since they were not recorded biting man. Field studies on P.argentipes were undertaken in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, near Kandy, in May 1988. Male sandflies outnumbered females on cows by 19:1, and were regularly spaced at all densities. This behaviour is considered analagous to swarming in other Nematocera. However, all-night

Transcriptome Analysis of the Larch Bud Gall Midge, Dasineura rozhkovi Mamaev et Nikolskij: De Novo Assembly, Phylogeny and Sexual Dimorphism.

The larch bud gall midge (Dasineura rozhkovi Mamaev et Nikolskij) is one of the main pests infesting larches. Its activity causes developmental defects and a noticeable decrease in population growth in adult Siberian larches (Larix sibirica Ledeb.). Due to its complex life cycle and active presence in areas of human habitation, this insect is difficult to exterminate using common methods. D. rozhkovi has not been studied before with the use of sequencing technologies, which means there is no information on the mechanisms occurring in its body at the molecular level. Here, we present for the fi

Ecdysteroids and oocyte development in the black fly Simulium vittatum.

BACKGROUND: Oocyte development was studied in the autogenous black fly, Simulium vittatum (Diptera, Nematocera), a vector of Onchocerca volvulus, the causative agent of onchocerciasis. RESULTS: Oocyte growth was nearly linear between adult eclosion and was complete by 72 hours at 21 degrees C. The oocyte became opaque at 14 hours after eclosion indicating the initiation of protein yolk deposition. The accumulation of vitellogenin was measured using SDS-PAGE. The density of the yolk protein bands at about 200 and 65 kDa increased during the first and second days after eclosion. The amount of p

Effects of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis and spinosad on adult emergence of the non-biting midges Polypedilum nubifer (Skuse) and Tanytarsus curticornis Kieffer (Diptera: Chironomidae) in coastal wetlands.

To optimize their efficacy, some insecticides used for mosquito control are introduced into aquatic ecosystems where mosquito larvae develop (marshes, ponds, sanitation devices) and cannot escape from the treated water. However, this raises the question of possible effects of mosquito larvicides on non-target aquatic species. Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti), which is well-known for its selectivity for Nematocera dipterans, is widely used for mosquito control all over the world. Structure and function of the cibarial armature in Simuliidae.

Cibarial armature morphology in adult female blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) is described using scanning electron microscopy. Three distinct types of armature are recognized, comprising those with teeth, e.g. Simulium ochraceum, S. ornatum, S. veracruzanum and S. vorax, those with spicules, e.g. Austrosimulium bancrofti, S. damnosum, S. exiguum, S. metallicum and S. neavei; and those lacking these projections, e.g. Prosimulium rufipes and S. lineatum. Whereas the armature is poorly developed in vectors of human onchocerciasis such as S. damnosum, S. exiguum, S. metallicum and S. neavei, the w

A comparative study of adult Tanyderidae mouthparts, with notes on Blephariceridae (Insecta: Diptera).

The Tanyderidae are a small, ancient, poorly studied nematoceran family with 10 extant genera. А previous study found in the adults of Eutanyderus and Peringueomyina a full set of mouthparts (including mandibles) - a rare case among Diptera. The new study examined the mouthparts of adult Tanyderus, Araucoderus and Nothoderus using light and scanning electron microscopy. A full set of mouthparts, with no significant differences between sexes, was again found in all three genera. Three structural types were identified, suggesting as many feeding strategies among recent Tanyderidae. The genera fo

CAPA-gene products in the haematophagous sandfly Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli)--vector for leishmaniasis disease.

Sandflies (Phlebotominae, Nematocera, Diptera) are responsible for transmission of leishmaniasis and other protozoan-borne diseases in humans, and these insects depend on the regulation of water balance to cope with the sudden and enormous intake of blood over a very short time period. The sandfly inventory of neuropeptides, including those that regulate diuretic processes, is completely unknown. Direct MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometric analysis of dissected ganglia of Phlebotomus papatasi, combined with a data-mining of sandfly genome 'contigs', was used to identify native CAPA-peptides, a pep
