Neonicotinoids and neonicotinoid-like pesticides (NNs) are insecticides widely used around the globe in agriculture and residential settings. The general public may be exposed to NN in a variety of ways including consuming food treated with these pesticides or contacting treated pets. Exposures to NNs can be assessed by using measured data for parent compounds or metabolic breakdown products in urine. In this evaluation, we review available health-based risk assessments and acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) to derive Biomonitoring Equivalents (BE) for interpretation of population biomonitoring d

Growing evidence for global pollinator decline is causing concern for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services maintenance. Neonicotinoid pesticides have been identified or suspected as a key factor responsible for this decline. We assessed the global exposure of pollinators to neonicotinoids by analyzing 198 honey samples from across the world. We found at least one of five tested compounds (acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, and thiamethoxam) in 75% of all samples, 45% of samples contained two or more of these compounds, and 10% contained four or five. Our results

Systemic insecticides are applied to plants using a wide variety of methods, ranging from foliar sprays to seed treatments and soil drenches. Neonicotinoids and fipronil are among the most widely used pesticides in the world. Their popularity is largely due to their high toxicity to invertebrates, the ease and flexibility with which they can be applied, their long persistence, and their systemic nature, which ensures that they spread to all parts of the target crop. However, these properties also increase the probability of environmental contamination and exposure of nontarget organisms. Envir

The environmental fates of nitenpyram (NPM), a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide, are not well-known. A thin solid film of NPM deposited on a germanium attenuated total reflectance (ATR) crystal was exposed to radiation from a low-pressure mercury lamp at 254 nm, or from broadband low pressure mercury photolysis lamps centered at 350 or 313 nm. The loss during photolysis was followed in time using FTIR. The photolysis quantum yields (ϕ), defined as the number of NPM molecules lost per photon absorbed, were determined to be (9.4 ± 1.5) × 10-4 at 350 nm, (1.0 ± 0.3) × 10-3 at 313 nm, and (1.

Acetamiprid belongs to a new class of insecticides called neonicotinoids, which have different effects from other insecticides. Neonicotinoids act as selective agonists at the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, therefore their toxicity is higher to insect pests than to humans. Cases of acetamiprid poisoning are still rare, because neonicotinoids have been released in the market only within the last decade. We experienced a case of acute acetamiprid poisoning and measured the blood concentration of acetamiprid. A 79-year-old man had ingested acetamiprid and got medical attention two hours after

Neonicotinoid insecticides are widely detected in vegetables, raising concerns regarding chronic dietary exposure. The present study quantified 7 neonicotinoids in 178 solanaceous vegetable samples (tomato, chilli pepper, eggplant, pimiento, and cherry tomato) collected from Ningbo, China, using HPLC-MS/MS. Cumulative exposure was evaluated by applying relative potency factors method, with imidacloprid as the reference compound. All target analytes were detected, with imidacloprid exhibiting the highest mean residue level of 18.8 µg/kg, with a detection frequency of 44.9%. Although individual

Neonicotinoid compounds are usually considered harmless and eco-friendly in terms of their targeted toxicity compared to that of pyrethroids and phosphorus-containing pesticides. However, overuse of neonicotinoid insecticides resulted in the accumulation of its residuals or intermediates in soil and water, which consequently affected beneficial insects as well as mammals, yielding pollution and secondary risks. This review summarized the recent advances in neonicotinoid degrading microorganisms and their metabolic diversity, with the aim to address the urgent need for degrading these insectici

Green coffee is essential in many tropical economies. Its cultivation often necessitates using pesticides that can leave behind residues harmful to human health. To ensure consumer safety, the European Community has set strict maximum residue limits (ranging from 0.01 to 1.0 mg/kg) for pesticides in green coffee sold within Europe. However, the lack of official testing methods for neonicotinoids (NEOs) is a problem, as laboratories must spend resources and time developing and validating suitable analytical methods. This study developed and validated a method for the simultaneous analysis of se

BACKGROUND: Neonicotinoid insecticides have been the target of much scrutiny as possible causes of recent declines observed in pollinator populations. Although neonicotinoids have been implicated in honey bee pesticide incidents, there has been little examination of incident report data. Here we summarize honey bee incident report data obtained from the Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA).
RESULTS: In Canada, there were very few honey bee incidents reported in 2007-2011 and data were not collected prior to 2007. In 2012, a significant number of incidents were reported in the pro

BACKGROUND: Exposure to individual neonicotinoids (NNIs) suggestively correlates with the type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk in animals. However, existing systematic epidemiological investigations remain scarce and lack inclusion of predictive biological markers.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the associations between exposure to NNI and diabetes, and to identify potential biomarkers by developing predictive models.
METHODS: We enrolled 1119 older individuals from community health screenings and categorized them into three groups: diabetes (n = 224), prediabetes (n = 184), and con

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Due to ever growing insecticide resistance in mosquitoes to commonly used insecticides in many parts of the globe, there is always a need for introduction of new insecticides for the control of resistant vector mosquitoes. In this study, larvicidal and adulticidal efficacies of three neonicotinoids (imidacloprid, thiacloprid and thiamethoxam) were tested against resistant and susceptible populations of Anopheles stephensi Liston 1901, Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti Linnaeus, and Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae).

Neonicotinoids are synthetic nicotine-like compounds extensively used globally as insecticides for agricultural and urban purposes. Neonicotinoid-contaminated produce is a major public health concern worldwide. Limited epidemiological studies have shown an association of neonicotinoid exposure with abnormal semen analysis. This study aimed to elucidate the potential disruption of the androgen receptor (AR) by eight common neonicotinoids, including imidacloprid (IMI), acetamiprid, clothianidin, thiamethoxam, dinotefuran, thiacloprid (THI), nitenpyram, and nithiazine using docking and molecular

Neonicotinoids are widely used but environmentally hazardous insecticides. Constructed wetlands offer potential for neonicotinoid removal, but the corresponding metabolic pathways and mechanisms in wetland plants are incompletely understood. This study investigated the fate of six neonicotinoids and their metabolites in Cyperus papyrus, a common wetland plant, and the underlying metabolic mechanisms through enzymatic and transcriptomic analyses. Neonicotinoids were absorbed by roots and translocated upward, causing high levels in shoots. Concentrations of neonicotinoids and their metabolites d

Neonicotinoids are the most widely used pesticides in the world. However, research studies have shown that it can affect the cognitive abilities and health of non-target bees and other wild pollinators by inducing DNA damage, apoptosis and mitochondrial damage, injure to its central nervous system, and it is even developmentally neurotoxic to mammals and humans, with mitochondria being an important target of neonicotinoids. Therefore, this article reviews the role of mitochondrial morphology, calcium ions (Ca2+) homeostasis, respiratory function, apoptosis, and DNA damage in neonicotinoids-ind

A comprehensive review of published and previously unpublished studies was performed to evaluate the neonicotinoid insecticides for evidence of developmental neurotoxicity (DNT). These insecticides have favorable safety profiles, due to their preferential affinity for nicotinic receptor (nAChR) subtypes in insects, poor penetration of the mammalian blood-brain barrier, and low application rates. Nevertheless, examination of this issue is warranted, due to their insecticidal mode of action and potential exposure with agricultural and residential uses. This review identified in vitro, in vivo, a

The widespread use of neonicotinoid insecticides has resulted in extensive resistance in field populations of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci, posing a major challenge to sustainable pest management. However, the molecular basis of cross-resistance to multiple neonicotinoids remains to be fully elucidated. In this study, resistance levels to thiamethoxam, thiacloprid, and nitenpyram were evaluated in eleven field populations of B. tabaci MED collected over a two-year period from vegetable fields in multiple provinces of China. Comparative transcriptomic analysis identified CYP402C5 as a candidate

The persistence in the environment and possible harmful effects of neonicotinoid insecticides have raised some concerns, which have led to the proposal of various measures for their remediation. The aim of this work was to study the elimination of five neonicotinoids (thiamethoxam (THM), imidacloprid (IMI), clothianidin (CLO), thiacloprid (THC), and acetamiprid (ACE)) using ferrate (Fe(VI)) as the oxidizing agent. Firstly, second-order rate constants for the reactions of neonicotinoids with Fe(VI) were determined at different pHs. The most reactive compound was THC, with a rate constant of 400

Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) are the fastest-growing class in agricultural protection. They target nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) in pests, stimulating the nervous system at low doses and causing paralysis and death at higher concentrations. NNIs are used in crop protection, seed treatment, forestry, agriculture, and flea control in domestic cattle. Effective at lower concentrations and offering long-term control, NNIs are favoured for their systemic activity. However, due to their water solubility, mobility, and moderate persistence, NNIs easily contaminate adjacent aquatic en

This study aimed to examine the side effects of selected neonicotinoids (Acetamiprid, Aceta, and Imidacloprid, Imid) on Oreochromis niloticus juveniles. The acute toxicity, Probit method, revealed an LC50 of 195.81 and 150.76 ppm for Aceta/96 h and Imid/72 h respectively. The fish were divided into three groups that were exposed, for 21 days (n = 5/replicate), to 1/10 of the LC50 of either neonicotinoids, however, the third was an unexposed control group. Results of erythrocytic micronucleus (MN), and nuclear abnormalities (NA) showed that Aceta and Imid exposure caused a significant (p < 0.05

Since their discovery in the late 1980s, neonicotinoid pesticides have become the most widely used class of insecticides worldwide, with large-scale applications ranging from plant protection (crops, vegetables, fruits), veterinary products, and biocides to invertebrate pest control in fish farming. In this review, we address the phenyl-pyrazole fipronil together with neonicotinoids because of similarities in their toxicity, physicochemical profiles, and presence in the environment. Neonicotinoids and fipronil currently account for approximately one third of the world insecticide market; the a
