Spontaneous regression in solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of pancreas.

A solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas is a rare neoplasm that mainly occurs in young women. We herein report the case of spontaneous regression in SPN of the pancreas. A 48-years-old female was found to have a mass in the head of the pancreas on examination for her back pain and referred to our hospital in 20XX. Laboratory data showed no abnormalities in serum levels of pancreatic enzymes and tumor markers. A contrast CT scan of upper abdomen showed a slightly enhanced lesion (23 × 19 mm in diameter) without cystic component or fibrous capsule in the head of the pancreas. An M

Spontaneous regression in choriocarcinoma and related gestational trophobalstic neoplasms.

Gestational trophoblastic neoplasia represents a biologic spectrum of tumors progressing from the hydatid mole, to invasive mole, and to choriocarcinoma. This progression is reflected in increasing degrees of aneuploidy in the respective lesions. Just as there is a natural tendency for the rejection of the trophoblast of a normal pregnancy culminating either in parturition or in spontaneous abortion, rejection of tumors of trophoblast occurs at any point in the progression of the disease spectrum. The unusual effectiveness of chemotherapy in trophoblastic disease may be related to this natural

Solid Pseudopapillary Neoplasm of the Pancreas Showing Spontaneous Regression Followed by Regrowth: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas is a rare, low-grade malignant tumor. Although SPNs generally exhibit indolent behavior, spontaneous regression detected on CT imaging is exceedingly rare, and to the best of our knowledge, regrowth following regression has not been previously reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old woman was referred to Kansai Medical University following the detection of liver dysfunction during a routine medical checkup. Imaging revealed a well-demarcated 20-mm mass in the pancreatic body, and an endoscopic US-guided biopsy confirmed SPN

Apparent spontaneous regression of malignant neoplasms after radiography: Report of four cases.

INTRODUCTION: On rare occasions, an apparently spontaneous regression of unknown etiology is observed in a neoplasm. We report a series of 4 patients with apparent spontaneous regression of malignant lymphomas after radiography. PRESENTATION OF CASE: All four of the tumors were malignant lymphomas. The regressions occurred between 1 and 2 months after the radiographic examinations. All four patients later underwent relapse and needed additional treatments: surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation. DISCUSSSION: Four cases had the following features in common: (1) the neoplasms were radiosensiti

In Situ Follicular B-Cell Neoplasm Presenting as Miliary Facial Papules: A Unique Clinical Presentation and Spontaneous Regression.

In situ follicular B-cell neoplasm (ISFN) is a variant of follicular lymphoma, presenting as an incidental histologic finding in lymph node biopsy or excisional specimens. ISFN presents with a B-cell population that strongly expresses BCL2 and CD10 within the germinal centers of a lymph node or extranodal site. Genetic analysis shows t(14;18) translocation. Herein, we report a case of ISFN presenting as military and agminated facial papules in a young woman, which resolved spontaneously in the postpartum period. To our knowledge, this is the only report of a cutaneous site of involvement of th

Spontaneous regression of cutaneous blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm followed by acute monocytic leukemia evolving from myelodysplastic syndrome.

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare and aggressive hematologic malignancy arising from plasmacytoid dendritic cell precursors. BPDCN typically manifests in the skin, but it can also evolve into a leukemic form or be complicated by acute myeloid leukemia, some cases with a preceding myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). We herein report the first case of complete spontaneous regression of cutaneous BPDCN followed by acute monocytic leukemia evolving from MDS. This is also the first reported case of gastric BPDCN invasion.

Oral Tongue Spontaneous Tumor Regression after Biopsy: A Case Report and Genomic Profile.

Spontaneous regression of a neoplasm is a rare oncologic phenomenon. Certain neoplasms, such as melanomas and neuroblastomas, display this phenomenon. To date, spontaneous regression of oral cavity squamous cell carcinomas has been documented in only a handful of case reports. We present a novel case of spontaneous regression of an oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma following biopsy. We discuss the tumor's unique genetic profile, immune response to cancer, and review the literature on possible mechanisms of spontaneous regression. Small-volume persistent cancer in our patient reinforces that

Spontaneous regression of mantle cell lymphoma: a report of four cases.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous regression has been reported in some indolent forms of lymphoma. Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is an aggressive lymphoid neoplasm and has a poor prognosis. However, approximately 30% of MCL patients can exhibit indolent clinical behavior. To date, complete spontaneous regression of MCL has not been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe four cases of spontaneous regression of MCL. At the time of presentation, these patients were asymptomatic, with lymph node enlargement and mild to moderate fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake on FDG-positron emission tomography combined wit

Spontaneous complete regression of hypothalamic pilocytic astrocytoma after partial resection in a child, complicated with Stevens-Johnson syndrome: a case report and literature review.

Pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) is the most common pediatric central nervous system glial neoplasm and the most common pediatric cerebellar tumor. The spontaneous regression that occurs after partial/subtotal resection is multifactorial, depending on multiple factors, as for the case of humoral and cell-mediated immune responses of the host to the implanted tumor. A 7-year-old boy was referred to a neurosurgery clinic with headache. Further imaging workup revealed hypothalamic PA. Partial resection of the lesions was performed with right-side pterional approach. The patient developed a severe panmu

The paradoxical association of regression with a poor prognosis in melanoma contrasted with a good prognosis in keratoacanthoma.

Partial regression in cutaneous malignant melanoma has been reported by a number of observers, albeit not all, to be associated with a relatively poor prognosis; in contrast, a keratoacanthoma, which eventually regresses, does not metastasize. The Hammond effect could explain the possibly poor prognosis of the thin regressing melanoma. Hammond(W.G. Hammond et al., Cancer J., 8: 130-138, 1995) showed that the speed of biological progression to less differentiated phenotypes is directly related to the immunocompetences of the tumor hosts. If partial regression is a sign of an unusually strong im

Spontaneous regression of solitary osteochondromas in children: An option to consider in clinical practice.

Osteochondromas are neoplasm that belong to the family of cartilaginous histogenesis tumors and represent 90% of all forms of exostoses. As most osteochondromas are asymptomatic, underdiagnosis is frequent. Symptomatic forms usually manifest before the age of 20 years, and the most common symptoms are pain and the detection of a bony mass. Herein, we report four cases of spontaneous regression of solitary osteochondromas in the light of literature. We consider that orthopedic surgeons should take into account the possibility of spontaneous regression of these tumors, before recommending surger

Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Progression and Spontaneous Regression in Desmoid Tumors.

Desmoid-type fibromatosis, also known as desmoid tumor (DT), is a rare and locally aggressive soft tissue neoplasm driven by constitutive activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, most commonly through CTNNB1 or APC alterations. While some tumors progress and cause substantial morbidity, approximately 25-38% undergo spontaneous regression during active surveillance, which is currently recommended as the first-line management strategy. Although advances in next-generation sequencing and transcriptomic profiling have elucidated the molecular drivers of tumor progression, the molecular m

Involution and neoplasms of the thymus.

Mammalian ontogenesis and postnatal histogenesis involves the dynamic and appropriate interaction of two growth related phenomena: progression and regression. The thymus gland is the organ of the mammalian body that exhibits the most profound involution during normal postnatal histogenesis. Involution of the thymus can be compared to similarly regressive processes during the ontogeny of holometabolic insects, as well as to the spontaneous regression of neoplasms. It can be expected that in the future a better understanding of neoplastic regression will result from the comparison of ontogenetic

Melanophagic dermatitis and panniculitis. A condition revealing an occult metastatic malignant melanoma.

A 32-year-old woman had a dozen slate-blue cutaneous macules of recent onset. Histologic examination of multiple skin biopsies revealed melanophagic dermatitis and panniculitis accompanying a few occult metastases of malignant melanoma. The primary site of the neoplasm remained undiscovered. The pathogenesis of melanophagic dermatitis and panniculitis is presumably related to the spontaneous regression of metastases.

Not always a miracle - The case of the missing metastasis.

Spontaneous regression of malignant neoplasms is extremely rare, but renal cell carcinomas (RCC) are most often associated with this phenomenon. We report a case of a patient with personal history of RCC, who underwent nephrectomy and no other oncological treatment. One year after nephrectomy, a lung metastasis was detected and kept under follow-up for 3 years. Its size increased over time until a needle biopsy was performed, and its metastatic nature confirmed. Wedge resection of the lung nodule was performed, and no neoplastic cells were found, suggesting its spontaneous regression after bio

[Spontaneous regression of colorectal cancer liver metastasis].

The mechanism of spontaneous regression of metastatic colorectal carcinoma in the liver remains incompletely understood. This article describes a case of spontaneous tumor regression in a metastatic lesion of colorectal cancer with microsatellite instability. An immune response to the neoantigen-rich tumor may have contributed to the spontaneous regression of the metastasis.

Spontaneous Regression of Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma Metastases or Immune Restoration?

Spontaneous regression of metastatic renal cell carcinoma is a rare and incompletely understood phenomenon. We report the case of a 61-year-old man with biopsy-proven pulmonary metastases from clear cell renal cell carcinoma who experienced durable tumor regression without receiving any systemic therapy. The patient underwent cryoablation of a symptomatic iliac bone metastasis and discontinued methotrexate, previously prescribed for inflammatory polyarthritis. Serial imaging demonstrated initial slow progression followed by significant shrinkage of pulmonary and mediastinal lesions, leading to

Spontaneous regression of a growing vestibular schwannoma.

A 75-year-old woman presented with a small right vestibular schwannoma which enlarged and then spontaneously regressed during conservative management. The tumor increased in size from 5.2 to 16.7 mm over 7 years with worsening symptoms of tinnitus, dizziness, and headache. The tumor then regressed to 8.2 mm and the symptoms improved for 4 years without further treatment. Changes in tumor growth should be carefully monitored during conservative management of patients with vestibular schwannoma.
