The relationship between dietary fat, adipose tissue composition, and neoplasms of the breast.

Dietary fat has been implicated in the development of carcinoma of the breast. Because of the difficulties in obtaining accurate dietary histories, we analyzed subcutaneous adipose fatty acids to compare the quality of fat intake in three groups of patients undergoing investigations for breast masses. These included carcinoma (n = 37, avg. age 54 yrs.), fibroadenoma (n = 27, age 31 yrs.), and other types (n = 21, age 50 yrs.). Subjects in the carcinoma group were heavier, although they were not obese. A one-way analysis of variance of nine adipose fatty acids and their derived ratios [polysatu

[The most common benign cutaneous neoplasms of vascular, muscular, and adipose tissue and their treatment].

Benign cutaneous vascular and cutaneous neoplasms arising from muscle or adipose tissue are rare. Their definition and classification are still controversially discussed. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies, together with the new genetic tests, contribute significantly to the correct description of the various benign neoplasms of cutaneous origin. Clarifying whether a lesion is benign is fundamental for prognosis and therapeutic management. In most cases, surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Dermatologists should be familiar with the classifications of the most common be

Neoplastic and non-neoplastic changes in F-344 rats treated with Naveglitazar, a gamma-dominant PPAR alpha/gamma agonist.

The carcinogenic potential of naveglitazar, a gamma-dominant peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) alpha/gamma dual agonist, was evaluated in a two-year study in F344 rats (0, 0.3, 1.0, or 3.0 mg/kg, males; 0, 0.1, 0.3, or 1.0 mg/kg, females). Increased mortality in male rats of the high-dose group was related to cardiac-associated lesions, neoplasms, and undetermined causes. Degeneration and hypertrophy of the myocardium occurred with dose-responsive increased incidence and severity. Neoplasms with increased incidence included sarcomas in male rats and urinary bladder neoplasms in

Non-epithelial tumors of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx: a clinicopathologyic study. VIII. Adipose tissue tumors (lipoma and liposarcoma).

In a study of 256 non-epithelial neoplasms involving the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx, only two lesions were classified as adipose tissue tumors (one lipoma and one liposarcoma). The lipoma was found incidentally when tissue removed from the maxillary sinus was studied histologically, the patient having been treated with a Caldwell-Luc procedure for maxillary sinusitis. The liposarcoma produced a large mass involving the nasal cavity, maxillary sinus, ethmoid area, hard palate and maxillary, temporal and sphenoid bones. The tumor extended into the cranial cavity and eventual

Diffuse lipomatosis of the thyroid and thyroid papillary carcinoma, lipomatous type: A case report.

Diffuse lipomatosis, characterized by the widespread presence of mature adipose tissue within the thyroid, is a rare condition. The presence of adipose tissue may vary within the neoplastic nodules in cases of diffuselipomatosis. Although the etiology remains unclear, it is generally regarded as an embryological developmental anomaly. This case report presents a 68-year-old female patient presented to the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) clinic with complaints of neck swelling. Ultrasonographic examination revealed an enlarged thyroid gland and a 2 cm nodule. The patient subsequently underwent the

Immunohistochemical identification of tumours of adipocytic differentiation using an antibody to aP2 protein.

AIM: To determine whether aP2 expression is a useful diagnostic marker in soft tissue tumour pathology. METHODS: A polyclonal antibody to aP2 was used to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of this protein in benign and malignant tumours of adipocytic differentiation and a wide variety of other neoplasms. RESULTS: aP2 was only expressed by lipoblasts (in all types of liposarcoma and in lipoblastomatosis) and by brown fat cells (in both hibernomas and normal periadrenal fetal fat). Other benign adipose tissue tumours and malignant connective tissue or epithelial tumours were distin

Thymolipoma in a cat.

Thymolipomas are rare benign thymic neoplasms recognised in humans, composed of mature adipose tissue and thymic tissue. An 8-year-old male domestic shorthair cat presented with anorexia, lethargy and vomiting secondary to the development of a thoracic effusion and an anterior mediastinal tumoral mass with fatty appearance. Histologically, the mass consisted of adipose tissue containing numerous cords and nests of cortical and medullary thymic tissue. No signs of thymic epithelial or lymphoid neoplastic proliferation were detected. The findings in this case are remarkably similar to the macros

Leptin and adiponectin mRNA expression from the adipose tissue surrounding the adrenal neoplasia.

CONTEXT: Interplay between adipose tissue and adrenal glands has been recently suggested, without well-founded actions of locally adipose tissue surrounding the adrenal glands. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that the local expression of leptin and adiponectin can be associated with pathological changes of the adrenal glands. PATIENTS AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We evaluated RT-PCR of leptin and adiponectin mRNA expression from the adipose tissue surrounding adrenal glands in 30 patients, collecting adipose tissue surrounding the adrenal neoplasms, peri-renal and subcutaneous depots. RESULTS: Lep

Mesenchymal differentiation in trigeminal neurilemmoma.

An unusual neurilemmoma of the trigeminal nerve in a 31-year-old woman is described. The neoplasm was roentgenographically calcified and contained various types of mesenchymal tissue, including a cavernous angioma, cartilage, bone, and adipose tissue. Angioma in combination with neurilemmoma occurs more frequently than other forms of mesenchymal tissue. Lipoma is an uncommon component of neoplasms affecting the cranial nerves. Cartilage and bone are rarely encountered in benign intracranial neurilemmomas. The histogenesis of this combined neoplasm is discussed in relation to the ectomesenchyma

Palatal lipoma: a case report.

Intraoral lipomas are benign mesenchymal neoplasms that originate in mature adipose cells with differential diagnosis of other soft tissue lesions. Lipoma, rarely, occurs in the oral cavity, and it corresponds to less than 4.4%, of all benign oral soft tissue tumors. Here, we are reporting a case of lipoma that occurred in the hard palate, which is extremely rare.

Oncocytic sialolipoma of the submandibular gland.

Sialolipoma, a rare tumor of the salivary gland, is a recently described variant of salivary gland lipoma. Oncocytic sialolipoma was first described by Pusiol et al. in 2009. We report the case of an oncocytic sialolipoma of the submandibular gland in a 43-year-old female. Excision of the tumor was performed with preservation of the submandibular gland. The tumor had a thin, fibrous capsule and consisted of abundant adipose tissue, an oncocytic nodule, and scattered normal glandular structures surrounded by adipose tissue. Four cases of sialolipoma of the submandibular gland, including the pre

Rapidly growing subcutaneous mass in an infant.

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) is a benign mesenchymal tumor of young children. It has a broad clinical differential diagnosis and is often clinically confused for vascular and malignant soft tissue neoplasms. Recognition of the unique histologic features of FHI, a triphasic population of mature adipose tissue, mature fibrous tissue, and immature mesenchymal tissue, will ensure the correct diagnosis. In this report we present a case of this rare entity, including the associated clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings.

Giant Esophageal Lipoma as an Uncommon Cause of Diverticula.

Esophageal lipoma is an uncommon benign tumor of the esophagus and accounts for only 0.4% of all benign neoplasms of the gastrointestinal system. The majority of these are located in the cervical part; only very few are located in the lower third of the esophagus. We discuss the case of a 37-year-old female who presented with dysphagia and an esophageal lipoma located in the lower third of the esophagus. The patient underwent right mini-thoracotomy and enucleation of lipoma. Histopathologic examination revealed adipose tissue with a collection of matured adipose tissue. We present the case bec

Late-onset acquired generalized lipodystrophy with muscle involvement.

Acquired generalized lipodystrophy (ALG) is a rare disorder characterized by the loss of adipose tissue and often found in association with metabolic disorders. Its onset is extremely rare in patients over 65 years, with only 1 case reported to date. Furthermore, there have been no reports of associated muscle involvement in ALG. We present the case of a 78-year-old woman who experienced almost complete loss of subcutaneous adipose tissue over 6 years. During this period, she was also successively diagnosed with hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, hypothyroidism, hepatic steatosis, and diabete

Thymofibrolipoma in two dogs.

Thymolipomas are unusual benign neoplasms composed of mature adipose and thymic tissue that represent less than 10% of all thymic tumours in man. A thymofibrolipoma is a histological variant of thymolipoma in which there is an additional abundance of fibrous connective tissue. Thymolipoma has been reported previously in one dog and one cat, but thymofibrolipoma has never been described. This report documents the clinical and pathological features of two cases of canine thymofibrolipoma.

Lipomatous variant of angiomyofibroblastoma involving the vulva: report of 3 cases of an extremely rare neoplasm with discussion of the differential diagnosis.

We report 3 cases of the extremely rare lipomatous variant of angiomyofibroblastoma (AMF) involving the vulva of women aged 35, 45, and 47. The lesions ranged in size from 2.5 to 12 cm in maximum dimension and the largest had a gross "fatty" appearance. The percentage of adipose tissue was approximately 50% in 1 case and over 90% in the other 2. In all the cases, there was a background of typical AMF with bland spindled and epithelioid cells arranged around blood vessels, although in the cases with >90% adipose tissue, this was subtle and diffusely interspersed with the adipose tissue. In all

Intraoral lipoma: report of 3 cases.

Lipoma, a benign tumor of adipose tissue is one of the most common benign neoplasms of the body. However, its occurrence in oral cavity is very rare. It accounts for 1 to 4% of benign neoplasms of mouth affecting predominantly the buccal mucosa, floor of mouth and tongue. We report three cases of intraoral lipoma, two in buccal mucosa and one in labial mucosa. An excisional biopsy was performed and histopathological examination revealed proliferation of mature adipocytes arranged in lobules and separated by fibrous septa. After 3 years follow up, the patients showed no signs of recurrence.

Self-defense or undermining the self? Exploring the possibilities and limitations of a novel anti-rape technology.

This study presents a case of a canine thymolipoma, which is a rare, slow-growing, benign tumor of the thymus composed of mature adipose tissue and thymic tissue. A 9-year-old spayed, female miniature pinscher presented with chronic cough and dyspnoea. Radiology revealed pleural effusion and a mediastinal mass with a fatty appearance. The mass was attached to, and silhouetted, the adjacent pericardium. Microscopically, the mass was composed of adipose tissue with numerous cords and nests of thymic tissue without corticomedullary arrangement. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first descrip

Fatty Images of the Heart: Spectrum of Normal and Pathological Findings by Computed Tomography and Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Ectopic cardiac fatty images are not rarely detected incidentally by computed tomography and cardiac magnetic resonance, or by exams focused on the heart as in general thoracic imaging evaluations. A correct interpretation of these findings is essential in order to recognize their normal or pathological meaning, focusing on the eventually associated clinical implications. The development of techniques such as computed tomography and cardiac magnetic resonance allowed a detailed detection and evaluation of adipose tissue within the heart. This pictorial review illustrates the most common charac
