An association between fibrous dysplasia and myxomas (soft-tissue neoplasms of mesenchymal origin) has been described in the literature. The authors report another such case of fibrous dysplasia/myxoma coexistence: a patient with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia who developed right anterior thigh pain from a solitary intramuscular myxoma. After a thorough review of the literature, the authors found that a causal relationship between fibrous dysplasia and myxomata remains uncertain. To ensure an adequate and accurate diagnosis, however, patients with soft-tissue myxomas should be thoroughly evalua

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) is a benign mesenchymal tumor of young children. It has a broad clinical differential diagnosis and is often clinically confused for vascular and malignant soft tissue neoplasms. Recognition of the unique histologic features of FHI, a triphasic population of mature adipose tissue, mature fibrous tissue, and immature mesenchymal tissue, will ensure the correct diagnosis. In this report we present a case of this rare entity, including the associated clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings.

A variety of soft tissue and visceral neoplasms have been associated with constitutional symptoms and signs including fever, fatigue, arthritis and laboratory abnormalities such as elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, leukocytosis with marked neutrophilia, anemia, thrombocytosis and others. This review addresses three main neoplastic categories that are associated with specific paraneoplastic phenomena: (1) neoplasms having in common the presence of diffuse mixed inflammatory infiltration (closely simulating an inflammatory pseudotumor) and frequently associated with constitutional symptom

The fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare primary tumors, accounting for 5% of malignant pleural neoplasms, which generally originate from sub-mesothelial mesenchymal tissue of the visceral pleura. These tumours generally exhibit clinical benign behavior although 12% of solitary fibrous tumors can be malignant and have worse outcomes. These tumors are considered "giant" when the lesion > 15 cm. Surgical treatment is the best choice for both benign and malignant neoplasms. We retrospectively analyzed the main case series of giant fibrous tumors of the pleura. In addition we report our experienc

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma, a type of sarcoma, is a malignant neoplasm with uncertain origin that arises in both the soft tissues and the bone. The occurrence of primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the pleura is extremely rare. We report a case of a 65-year-old Korean man who is being diagnosed with primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the pleura.

Multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma (MCA) represent an uncommon benign fibrohistiocytic vascular lesion that sometimes may go undiagnosed because of its clinical and histopathological similarities with benign fibrous histiocytoma and other soft-tissue neoplasms especially when localized on oral cavity or semi mucosa. We report the case of a solitary multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma on the lower lip of a 46-year-old woman suggesting that this rare lesion should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the oral soft-tissue neoplasms.

Solitary fibrous tumors are mesenchymal neoplasms that make up 2% of soft tissue tumors. Doege-Potter syndrome (DPS) occurs between 5-10% of patients with solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP). Little is mentioned about DPS in the relapse setting, where malignant transformation should always be ruled out (until 12% of cases) according to tumor size, histopathologic aspects (including mitotic index) and immunohistochemical markers. This is the first case of Doege-Potter syndrome in the setting of a fibrous tumor relapse of the pleura without malignant transformation described in Colombia.

A ureteral fibrous polyp presenting as ureteropelvic junction obstruction in a 10-year-old boy is reported. These neoplasms are uncommon, especially in children. If a salvageable kidney is present, resection of the tumor and adjacent ureter is proper therapy. However, in the present case the fibrous polyp had produced marked ureteropelvic junction obstruction, resulting in only a thin shell of renal parenchymal tissue, and therefore, nephroureterectomy was performed.

A 61-year-old man with a history of malignant solitary fibrous tumor of the chest had development of unusual sites of metastasis involving the sphenoid wing of the orbit and soft tissues of the cheek. He was found to have a solitary fibrous tumor, an uncommon type of spindle cell neoplasm that most often arises in the pleura, which was metastatic to the orbit. This is the first reported case of malignant solitary fibrous tumor metastatic to the orbit. The clinical and histopathologic findings of metastatic malignant solitary fibrous tumor are described.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumors are rare soft tissue tumors of submesothelial origin and variable malignant potential. The most common localization is pleural, whereas only 0.6% are of extrapleural localization. Solitary fibrous tumor of the peritoneum, especially of gastric serosa is an extremely rare form of this tumor.
CASE REPORT: We presented a 65-year-old female patient with solitary fibrous tumor of the stomach. Histopathological analysis of removed tissue showed the presence of tumor tissue built of spindle cells, elongated nuclei with moderately abundant cytoplasm. Cells were i

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare neoplasms of mesenchymal origin. While the mean age of presentation is 58 years old, we report the case of the youngest documented patient with an SFT of the orbit. A 13-month-old child was evaluated for eyelid asymmetry and then referred to the oculoplastic service. On examination, a soft tissue mass of the right inferomedial orbit was observed. MRI demonstrated a well-circumscribed, extraocular lesion in the inferomedial right orbit, potentially fibrous in nature. Excision was performed without complications. Pathologic examination demonstrated fibrous

A 61-year-old Caucasian man presented with otalgia, dysarthria, and weight loss. Neurological examination revealed palatal hypomotility, and weakness of the facial and tongue muscles. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head demonstrated the presence of a soft tissue mass in the clivus. Histologic examination of resected tumor disclosed well-differentiated thyroid follicles that invaded the local osseous tissues. Physical examination and radioiodine images of the thyroid gland were normal. The serum thyroglobulin concentration was markedly elevated (1011 ng/mL). A 0.9-cm well-differentiated beni

Fibrous histiocytomas are uncommon mesenchymal tumours of the soft tissue in the head and neck region. We report two cases that occurred in the oral cavity, one of a benign fibrous histiocytoma (BFH) and another of an angiomatoid variant of fibrous histiocytoma (AFH). BFH is a benign neoplasm composed of cells with fibroblastic and histiocytic characteristics, while AFH is considered as a distinct type of fibrous histiocytoma with an intermediate malignancy grade that combines features of both fibrohistiocytic and vascular neoplasm. We describe the clinicopathological and histological characte

Solitary fibrous tumor (formerly known as hemangiopericytoma) is a rare soft tissue neoplasm, most frequently arising from the retroperitoneum and lower extremities. We present two cases of retroperitoneal solitary fibrous tumors diagnosed after surgical removal. We provide a literature review showing the basic clinical, pathologic and therapeutic features of these tumors.

Solitary fibrous tumors of the thyroid gland are rare soft-tissue neoplasms and only 24 cases have been reported in the literature to date. We describe two patients who underwent surgery for rapidly growing thyroid nodes of uncertain nature on cytology. At the final histological examination, they proved to be fibrous tumors of the thyroid gland that were CD-34, BCL2, CD-99, and Ki-67 positive, like other known cases. Neither of these two cases have recurred so far.

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is the least common benign cartilaginous tumor, comprising less than 0.5 to 1% of all skeletal neoplasms. This subject was a 16-year-old female with a three-year history of pain involving the distal femoral metaphysis. This case showed an unusual feature: it was intracortical in location. Radiologic differential diagnosis included metaphyseal fibrous defect, periosteal chondroma, simple or aneurysmal bone cyst, and cortical abscess. On operation, the lesion filled the intracortical defect with whitish myxoid soft tissue, bulging into the adjacent soft tissue. Micros

Mostly occurring in pleura, solitary fibrous tumour is an unusual soft tissue neoplasm. Solitary Fibrous Tumour with abundant myxoid stroma represents a rare morphologic subtype of the already uncommon tumour. We report a myxoid solitary fibrous tumour of the soft tissue in a 42-year-old man. The patient presented with a large, movable, nontender mass at the right axilla. The MRI showed a well-defined tumour with increased signal after gadolinium injection. During surgery, the mass was found to be closely associated with the axillary vein. The tumour was completely excised. Pathological and im

The distinction of solitary fibrous tumors from histologically similar neoplasms is often difficult because they rarely occur at a variety of extrapleural sites. CD34 immunoreactivity has recently been recognized to be an adjunct for the diagnosis of solitary fibrous tumors. However, it is now known that CD34 staining is not entirely specific for this entity. We evaluated 23 solitary fibrous tumors and 54 other spindle cell tumors often considered in the differential diagnosis for immunoreactivity using monoclonal antibodies directed against bcl-2 protein, which protects cells from apoptosis a

CD163, a hemoglobin scavenger receptor, is expressed in monocytes and macrophages. We tested the expression of the CD163 protein in 1,105 human malignancies and normal tissues using tissue microarrays and conventional paraffin-embedded tissue sections. Besides staining nonneoplastic monocytes and histiocytes (tissue macrophages), membranous/cytoplasmic staining for CD163 was primarily limited to neoplasms with monocytic/histiocytic differentiation. CD163 reactivity was not observed in normal tissues, lymphomas, carcinomas, and in a majority of mesenchymal neoplasms, including follicular dendri
