Pigmented olfactory neuroblastoma: a new example of melanotic neuroepithelial neoplasm.

The light and electron microscopic features of a pigmented olfactory neuroblastoma are described. The neuroblastic nature of the tumor was confirmed by the demonstration of axons, some of which originated from the neoplastic cells, and by the presence of dense-core vesicles in the perikarya and processes of the tumor cells. The tumor contained a large amount of pigment, most of which had the histochemical reactions of melanin, but some of which had that of lipofuscin. Electron microscopy failed to demonstrate the presence of melanosomes or premelanosomes: the pigment showed some of the feature

Intraventricular dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor-like neoplasm with disseminated spinal tumor.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT)- like lesions arise in extracortical locations and behave in a benign fashion similar to that of cortical DNTs. They usually come to attention by symptoms and signs of increased intracranial pressure rather than focal neurological impairment. Here we report a case of 9-year-old boy with a complaint of headache and back pain. A third ventricular mass lesion with disseminated spinal tumor was detected on his magnetic resonance imaging. The presence of floating neurons in a mucinous matrix, oligodendrocyte-like cells (OLCs) aligning axonal columns and

A primary intracranial neuroepithelial neoplasm with novel TCF3::BEND2 fusion: a case report.

Astroblastoma, MN1-altered, is a rare circumscribed glial neoplasm that is composed of round, cuboidal, orcolumnar cells with astroblastic perivascular pseudorosettes, often associated with MN1::BEND2 and MN1::CXXC5 fusions. Atroblastoma-like gliomas harbouring EWSR1::BEND2 have been reported that they defined an epigenetically distinct subtype of astroblastoma. We report a case of a 19-year-old female with an intracranial neuroepithelial tumor featuring a novel TCF3::BEND2 fusion. This tumor, while classified as EWSR1::BEND2 gliomas based on DNA methylation, did not exhibit the MN1 alteration

Case report of a rare TCF3::BEND2-fused primary intracranial neuroepithelial neoplasm in a female child.

Astroblastoma, MN1-altered, is a rare circumscribed glial neoplasm defined by alterations in the MN1 gene and often the MN1::BEND2 fusion. However, it is noted that a subset of these tumors lacks the classic astroblastic perivascular pseudorosettes, which can complicate diagnosis. We report a diagnostically challenging case in a 6-year-old female presenting with gait disturbance and limb weakness. MRI identified a well-defined fourth ventricular roof mass causing obstructive hydrocephalus. Histology post-resection revealed a solid tumor composed of epithelioid cells arranged in sheets and nest

Surgery, hyperfractionated craniospinal irradiation, and adjuvant chemotherapy in the management of supratentorial embryonal neuroepithelial neoplasms in children.

Supratentorial embryonal neuroepithelial tumors are undifferentiated neoplasms. We have used this term in preference to the controversial classification primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET). These lesions in children are malignant neoplasms which are usually fatal within 2 years of diagnosis in spite of therapy with surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. We have adopted an aggressive approach to the treatment of these tumors with surgical resection, hyperfractionated craniospinal irradiation of 30.6-43.9 Gy followed by a tumor boost to a total dose of 50-63.7 Gy, and adjuvant chemotherapy

[Supratentorial neuroepithelial tumor with PLAGL1 gene fusion - a new type of morphologically variable pediatric brain neoplasm defined by a distinct DNA methylation class. A case report and literature review].

BACKGROUND: Methylation analysis has become a powerful diagnostic tool in modern neurooncology. This technique is valuable to diagnose new brain tumor types. OBJECTIVE: To describe the MRI and histological pattern of neuroepithelial tumor with PLAGL1 gene fusion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present a 6-year-old patient with small right frontal intraaxial tumor causing drug resistant epilepsy. Despite indolent preoperative clinical course and MRI features suggesting glioneuronal tumor, histological evaluation revealed characteristics of high-grade glioma, ependymoma and neuroblastoma. RESULTS:

Rosettes and pseudorosettes in veterinary neuropathology.

Rosettes and pseudorosettes are morphologic cell arrangements found in many neuroepithelial neoplasms in human medicine, including embryonal nervous system tumors (neuroblastoma, medulloblastoma, pineoblastoma, and retinoblastoma), non-embryonal nervous system tumors (ependymoma, astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, and choroid plexus tumors), and other extraneural neuroepithelial neoplasms. Although these structures are also described in neuroepithelial neoplasms of domestic animals, their frequency is still poorly characterized or inconsistently documented in veterinary medicine. Furthermore, ros

Microtubule-associated protein-2 immunoreactivity: a useful tool in the differential diagnosis of low-grade neuroepithelial tumors.

Complex and variable morphological phenotypes pose a major challenge to the histopathological classification of neuroepithelial tumors. This applies in particular for low-grade gliomas and glio-neuronal tumors. Recently, we and others have identified microtubule-associated protein-2 (MAP2) as an immunohistochemical marker expressed in the majority of glial tumors. Characteristic cell morphologies can be recognized by MAP2 immunoreactivity in different glioma entities, i.e., process sparse oligodendroglial versus densely ramified astrocytic elements. Here, we describe MAP2-immunoreactivity patt

Retinoblastoma, microphthalmia, coloboma, and neuroepithelioma of the pineal body.

A one-month-old infant boy was examined early in life because his mother had bilateral retinoblastoma and his father had bilateral microphthalmia. The ophthalmologist found his right eye was normal size with a coloboma of the iris, choroid, and retina. The left eye was microphthalmic with a coloboma of the uveal tract and retina. A vascularized fluffy white mass in the posterior pole was diagnosed clinically as a retinoblastoma. The tumor regressed with radiation. When the patient was four years of age, a large tumor was found in the region of the pineal recess, causing hydrocephalus and seizu

Neurodevelopmental Blueprint in Gliomas: Toward an Ontogenetic Multimodal Integrated Therapy.

Neuroepithelial tumors, including diffuse gliomas and embryonal neoplasms, remain among the most lethal cancers despite major advances in molecular diagnostics and some novel targeted therapies for subsets of patients. A persistent barrier to progress is the lack of a unifying framework that integrates their cellular hierarchy, spatial heterogeneity, and distinctive patterns of progression. In this review, we synthesize converging evidence that neuroepithelial tumor biology represents a pathologic re-enactment of brain ontogeny. Integrating molecular, single-cell, histoarchitectonic, and anato

Small cell tumor of cervix with neuroepithelial features: ultrastructural observations in two cases.

Two cases of small cell tumor of the uterine cervix are reported in which electron microscopic studies indicated that the tumor cells were of neural crest origin. Both tumors behaved aggressively, and metastatic involvement of pancreas was demonstrated in one patient, while the second patient developed liver metastasis. The need to distinguish these neoplasms from squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix is stressed. The tumors are compared with small cell neuroepithelial neoplasms previously reported as adult neuroblastomas.

Papillary tumor of the pineal region.

Tumors of the pineal region are rare in adulthood, accounting for approximately 1% of intracranial neoplasms in this age range. Papillary tumor of the pineal region (PTPR) was first described by Jouvet et al. in 2003. In 2007, PTPR was included by the World Health Organization as a distinct entity in their new classification of central nervous system tumors. We report a case of PTPR, and undertake a literature review of this rare neuroepithelial neoplasm. Patients with PTPR need long-term follow up, and new cases should be well documented so that we can gain a better understanding of this neop

Case-control study of neuroepithelial tumors in Rochester, Minnesota, 1950-1977.

Rochester, Minnesota, has over many decades the highest reported incidence rates of primary intracranial neoplasms. This occurs in the absence of any readily identifiable risk factors. A case-control study of neuroepithelial tumors has been undertaken utilizing the records-linkage system at the Mayo Clinic. This study failed to yield any significant findings for the factors examined.

Coexistent pathology in chronic epilepsy patients with neoplasms.

Neoplasms are a well-established cause of medically intractable or chronic epilepsy. Certain tumors, including gangliogliomas and dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors, are well known to be associated with cortical dysplasia. This study retrospectively examines the incidence of coexistent pathology in patients with tumors and chronic epilepsy. This study is a retrospective review of 270 tumors arising in patients with medically intractable epilepsy encountered during a 20-year period (1989-2009). Coexistent pathology was noted in 50 of 270 (17.8%) patients, including 27 males (54%) with a me

Primary intracranial rhabdomyosarcoma producing proptosis.

A case is reported of a primary rhabdomyosarcoma occurring in the right subfrontal region of a 16 year old girl. The patient suffered from dull frontal headache and proptosis for three months before hospitalization. The circumscribed and demarcated neoplasm involved the dura mater, and invaded the frontal sinus and roof of the orbit on the same side. The pathogenesis of the tumour is thought to be related to aberrant differentiation of unstable mesenchyme. A suggestion is made that the "medullomyoblastoma" should be classified as a type of neoplasm of mixed mesenchymal and neuroepithelial orig

Melanotic primitive neuroectodermal (neuroepithelial) tumor of medulla.

A 69-year-old man had a melanotic primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the medulla displaying various neuroepithelial elements including undifferentiated neuroepithelial cells forming Homer Wright's rosettes as well as neoplastic neuroglia resembling those seen in medulloblastoma. The neuroglial tumor cells were verified by demonstrating glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in the cells. These findings support the concept that the primitive neuroectodermal tumor and medulloblastoma are similar neoplasms. They have been described by such diverse names as melanotic medulloblastomas and progonoma

Desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma and desmoplastic cerebral astrocytoma of infancy.

The desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma and desmoplastic cerebral astrocytoma of infancy are rare neoplasms arising in the cerebral hemispheres within the first two years of life which are defined by a combination of distinctive clinicopathologic features. The tumours are massive, partially cystic and invariably occur in a supratentorial location. Involvement of multiple lobes is common with a predilection for frontoparietal areas. In one series of 22 desmoplastic infantile gangliogliomas, all patients presented between 2 and 24 months of age (mean = 6 months; median = 4 months) with a male t

Primary Tumors of the Central Nervous System. Clinical Experience at a Third Level Center.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) tumors are a group of neoplasms that originate from various cells in the CNS. The increasing incidence and prevalence of this type of tumor in developing countries are striking; however, there are few current studies in Latin America including Mexico estimating the impact of these pathological entities on the general population. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to study the characteristics of primary CNS tumors over a period of 52 years. METHODS: A review of records from patients with a histopathological diagnosis of CNS neoplasm over a perio
