INTRODUCTION: Intramedullary glioblastoma is a rare entity comprising 1.4-9% of spinal gliomas. Spinal cord radiation-induced gliomas are unique, with only 13 cases reported to date.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old female with a history of mediastinal Hodgkin lymphoma treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy who subsequently developed thyroid cancer and breast cancer throughout her life was admitted due to slowly progressing spastic tetraparesis. Cervical MRI revealed an intramedullary lesion at the C4-T1 level, enlarging the spinal cord, with a heterogenous contrast enhancement and a lesi

The pathologic findings are described in three patients who developed second intracranial neoplasms after irradiation for central nervous system malignancy. The second neoplasms were an astrocytoma, an ependymoma, and multiple meningiomas. All were histologically different from the first neoplasms and appeared in the field of irradiation between 3 and 15 years later. It is suggested that therapeutic irradiation was a causative factor in the development of these tumors.

Radiation-induced cancer, although fortunately a rare complication of radiotherapy, is nonetheless observed occasionally even after megavoltage radiation has been used. Over a 22-year period at the Curie Institute, four patients were found to have malignant neoplasms within the fields of megavoltage treatment given for various cancers of the head and neck region. Three of the neoplasms were sarcomas, two osteogenic and one fibrosarcoma, and the other tumor was a sarcomatoid epithelioma. The latent period ranged from 3 1/2-15 years. Although the evidence is strong that the neoplasms were causal

BACKGROUND Following craniospinal irradiation in children with medulloblastoma, secondary neoplasms are among the most serious long-term sequelae that include leukemias and solid tumors of the urinary or digestive tracts, thyroid, skin, and central nervous system. Furthermore, in children with Gorlin syndrome following craniospinal irradiation for medulloblastoma, there is a rising incidence of skin and non-skin malignancies. CASE REPORT The patient in the present study was a 19-year-old female who was treated with craniospinal irradiation and chemotherapy following gross total resection (GTR)

BACKGROUND: Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is useful for selecting patients with thyroid nodules for thyroidectomy. Its value in patients who have been exposed to low-dose therapeutic radiation is questionable because these patients have an increased risk of multifocal benign and malignant tumours, and thyroid cancer is common in such patients.
METHODS: Between 1960 and 1999, 171 patients with one or more thyroid nodules who had a history of exposure to radiation underwent operation; 49 of these patients had preoperative FNAC. The cytology results in these 49 patients were compared wi

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: State-of-the-art radiotherapy modalities have the potential of reducing late effects of treatment in childhood cancer survivors. Our aim was to investigate the carcinogenic risk associated with 3D conformal (photon) radiation (3D-CRT), intensity modulated arc therapy (IMAT) and pencil beam scanning proton therapy (PBS-PT) in the treatment of paediatric abdominal neuroblastoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The risk of radiation-induced second malignant neoplasm (SMN) was estimated using the concept of organ equivalent dose (OED) for eleven organs (lungs, rectum, colon, stomac

OBJECTIVE: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a well-established treatment for brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs). However, data on radiation-induced neoplasms (RINs) following SRS in patients with bAVMs remain limited. In this study, authors aimed to evaluate the incidence of newly developed intracranial RINs following SRS for bAVMs.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively analyzed anonymized data for patients who underwent SRS for bAVMs between 1990 and 2019 at 18 Gamma Knife centers in Japan. Patients with fewer than 3 years of radiological follow-up, prior radiotherapy, or genetic tum

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether former childhood cancer patients who developed a subsequent secondary primary neoplasm (SPN) are characterized by elevated spontaneous chromosomal instability or cellular and chromosomal radiation sensitivity as surrogate markers of compromised DNA repair compared to childhood cancer patients with a first primary neoplasm (FPN) only or tumor-free controls. Primary skin fibroblasts were obtained in a nested case-control study including 23 patients with a pediatric FPN, 22 matched patients with a pediatric FPN and an SPN, and 22 matched

AIMS: Hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA) dysfunction is a sequela of cranial radiotherapy. The purpose of this study was to use endocrine data from existing publications to characterise the baseline endocrine status, the effects of radiotherapy on the HPA during the first follow-up year and the time dependence of radiation-induced HPA dysfunction in patients treated with radiotherapy for non-pituitary intracranial neoplasms.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search of databases was carried out for articles that reported the results of endocrine testing for patients aged 16 years and older wh

Retinoblastoma is the most common primary intraocular neoplasm in children. Use of radiotherapy has decreased due to the incidence of second malignant neoplasms (SMNs). In our study, photon (n = 42) and proton (n = 66) radiotherapy cohorts had median follow-up of 28.7 and 18.2 years, respectively. The majority of patients (74%) had bilateral disease at diagnosis. Proton radiotherapy is associated with significantly lower cumulative incidence of in-field SMNs (0% vs. 11.1% at 15 years, p = 0.005), with three additional cases occurring > 20 years after photon radiotherapy. These findings suggest

Epidemiological studies of atomic-bomb survivors have revealed an increased risk of lymphoid neoplasm (i.e. acute lymphoblastic leukemia) associated with radiation exposure. In particular, children are more susceptible to radiation-induced precursor lymphoid neoplasm than adults. Although ~75% of human lymphoid tumors are B-cell neoplasms, the carcinogenic risk associated with each stage of differentiation of B-cells after radiation exposure is poorly understood. Therefore, we irradiated mice at infancy or in young adulthood to investigate the effect of age at exposure on the risk of developin

Secondary, radiation-induced neoplasms represent a significant long-term risk after radiation treatment, and radiation-induced sarcomas (RAS) have an especially poor prognosis. These have rarely been reported after irradiation for pituitary adenomas.

OBJECTIVE: The use of medical radiation has increased 6-fold in the past 30 years. Within neurosurgery, the advent of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) has significantly altered the treatment paradigm for both benign and malignant central nervous system diseases. With this increased reliance on radiation has come a responsibility to identify the long-term risks, including the potential development of radiation-induced neoplasms. Although the data regarding traditional radiation exposure and its subsequent risks are well-defined, the data for SRS is less developed.
METHODS: We reviewed the publi

Brain irradiation has several well-known long-term side effects, including radiation-induced neoplasms and vasculopathy. In this case report, we describe an extremely rare case of meningioma and 15 cavernomas developing in a 29-year-old man, 19 years after cranial irradiation for posterior cranial fossa medulloblastoma. To our knowledge, this is the first case of a radiation-induced meningioma accompanied by this many radiation-induced cavernous angiomas.

OBJECTIVE: After (90)Y-microsphere radioembolization for unresectable hepatic neoplasms, the nearby gallbladder is susceptible to radiation-induced cholecystitis, an uncommon complication. The purpose of this study was to characterize the imaging findings after (90)Y radioembolization of the gallbladder and to assess the incidence of clinically significant radiation-induced cholecystitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for cholecystectomy after (90)Y treatment of 133 consecutively registered patients (76 men, 57 women; average age, 65 years). Thirty-four

This article addresses theoretical and clinical aspects of radiation-induced intestinal injuries, which complicate radiation therapy for malignant neoplasms of the abdominal and pelvic organs. Many clinical aspects of this issue remain unknown due to the lack of awareness among doctors and patients. Further study of radiation-induced intestinal injuries and the development of personalized approaches to their prevention and treatment represent a relevant direction in internal medicine.

The effect of low-dose (2 Gy) radiation on ethylnitrosourea (ENU)-induced neoplasms was studied in Sprague-Dawley and Holtzman strains of rats. With a 60 mg/kg dose of ENU administered on day 1 in Sprague-Dawley rats, 18.4% of the neoplasms induced were found in the kidney. When the same dose of ENU was given on day 10, the incidence of kidney tumors fell to 2.8%. Prior (2 Gy) radiation on day 9 enhanced kidney tumor induction to 16.1%, a trend also observed in the case of ENU-induced neural tumors. In Holtzman rats, 40 mg/kg ENU induced more kidney tumors (12.5%) when given on day 4 than on d

Intracranial germinomas are considered one of the most radiosensitive tumors and are curable by radiotherapy alone. Although patients can expect long-term survival, the adverse effects of radiotherapy and late sequelae in survivors are a major concern. Radiation-induced secondary neoplasms are one of those sequelae and are a serious concern because they are often connected directly with life prognosis. We describe a case of radiation-induced glioblastoma after radiotherapy for germinoma. An 11-year-old boy with basal ganglia germinoma was successfully treated with postoperative cranial irradia

There is significant interest in the development of agents that can ameliorate radiation damage after exposure to radiation has occurred. Here we report that chronic supplementation of the antioxidant Tempol in the diet of mice can reduce body weight without toxicity, decrease cancer, and extend survival when administered after nonlethal total body radiation (TBI). These effects were apparent in two different strains of mice (C3H, CBA) exposed to TBI (3 Gy). Notably, delaying administration of the Tempol diet one month after TBI could also enhance survival. Tempol reduced the incidence of hema
