[Second primary neoplasms in laryngeal cancer patients].

In the period of 1990-1992, 238 patients underwent surgical treatment for laryngeal carcinoma in ORL Department of Medical Academy in Białystok. Until now 27 cases of second primary malignances (SPM) have been found in this group (11.3% of the screened population). Upper aerodigestive tract was the most frequent location, i.e. it was observed in 18 cases (66.6%). There was 100% mortality among patients with SPM of stomach, oesophagus and lung estabishing 13% deaths in the whole group. There was no correlation between the stage and the location of primary laryngeal cancer and SPM. Carcinogenic

High constant incidence rates of second primary neoplasms.

The incidence of contralateral breast cancer is high and constant with age, around five per 1000 women who had a primary breast cancer. For other neoplasms, the pattern of incidence of second primary neoplasms with age is less known, particularly as for only a few neoplasms the site of origin is not totally removed, and hence remains at risk of a second primary. Using the dataset from the Cancer Registry of the Swiss Canton of Vaud, we show that the incidence of second neoplasms is constant with age also after oral and pharyngeal, colorectal cancers, cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) and basa

Second primary neoplasms in patients with laryngeal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: To better define the characteristics of second primary malignancies appearing in patients suffering from head and neck cancers, and more specifically laryngeal carcinoma, and to elicit those parameters that may be of assistance in better diagnosing, treating, and predicting outcome in such patients. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of a group of 514 compliant subjects, examined and treated during an 8-year period until 1996. After initial diagnosis and subsequent treatment, rigorous follow-up ensured systematic screening of the subjects, who underwent standard examinations in ou

[Independent multiple primary tumors and second primary neoplasms. Relationship between smoking].

Multiple primary tumors and second primary neoplasms have been increasing in incidence in recent decades and are reviewed in this paper. The reasons attributed to this significant increase are fundamentalment the best diagnosis of multiple concurrent cases and increased overall survival of patients diagnosed with cancer, allowing surface new primary tumors in other organs during or after standard monitoring. At the same time are invoked as possible causes of the widespread use of radio and chemotherapy for the first tumor. The genitourinary system is frequently involved in cases of multiple ne

Second primary respiratory tract malignant neoplasms in supraglottic carcinoma.

In this study, a second respiratory tract malignant neoplasm developed in 20 of 163 cases of supraglottic carcinoma either at the time of diagnosis or after diagnosis. Using an actuarial method of calculation, 19% of the survivors will experience a second respiratory tract malignant neoplasm within five years after the diagnosis of supraglottic carcinoma. This is three times the incidence in patients who survive glottic carcinoma and 14 times the incidence in the normal population. A third of this group of patients with supraglottic carcinoma are alive and well at five years, a third died of s

Second primary neoplasms after 19281 endocrine gland tumours: aetiological links?

The nationwide Swedish Family-Cancer Database of 9.6 million individuals was used to analyse the development of second neoplasia after 6909 thyroid and 12697 other endocrine tumours. Tumour cases were retrieved from the Swedish Cancer Registry from 1958 to 1996. The risk of a second endocrine tumour was markedly increased compared with first endocrine tumour; e.g. the standardised incidence ratios (SIRs) were well over 10 for adrenal tumours after thyroid cancer, and vice versa. Familial risks were higher for the development of second compared with first neoplasms, and the SIRs for men were us

Second Primary Malignancies in Patients with a Neuroendocrine Neoplasm in England.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) may often develop other malignancies. This study aimed to identify the frequency at which these second malignancies occurred in England. METHODS: Data were extracted from the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS) on all patients diagnosed with a NEN at one of eight NEN site groups between 2012 and 2018: appendix, caecum, colon, lung, pancreas, rectum, small intestine, and stomach. WHO International Classification of Disease Edition-10 (ICD-10) codes were used to identify patients who had been diagnosed with an add

Second primary neoplasms in 633,964 cancer patients in Sweden, 1958-1996.

The Swedish Family-Cancer Database was used to analyze concordant (same site) and discordant (different site) second primary neoplasms in 633,964 cancer patients diagnosed from 1958 to 1996. Cases of second malignant neoplasms were extracted from the Database if the diagnosis date of the first and second cancer differed by at least 1 month. The expected numbers of cancers were obtained by applying site-, sex-, age-, period-, residence- and socioeconomic level-specific rates in the corresponding population in the Database to the appropriate person-years at risk. The standardized incidence ratio

[Incidence of second primary malignant neoplasms in patients treated for laryngeal cancer].

Although the survival rates reported for patients with laryngeal cancer are quite good, there is a risk of developing second malignant tumors in this population. From a total analyzed of 1268 patients with laryngeal cancer, the second malignant tumors in 30 persons group were identified. The prognosis for second malignant tumors is poor, especially with tumors of the lung and oesophagus. Vitamin A and carotenoids are promising for second malignancies prevention.

Second primary neoplasms following non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in New South Wales, Australia.

The incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) has been increasing rapidly over the last three decades. The reasons for this trend are not known although increasing exposure to sunlight has been postulated. We used data from the New South Wales Central Cancer Registry to analyse second primary neoplasms following NHL diagnosed between 1972 and 1995, to identify possible common causal agents. A total of 12,452 patients contributed 54,308 person-years of follow-up during which time there were 705 second primary neoplasms compared to 592.99 expected (standardized incidence ratio (SIR = 1.19, 95% c

Second Primary Neoplasms in Pediatric Cancer Survivors With Single Institution Experience From Turkey.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to establish the characteristics of second primary neoplasms (SPNs) and the long-term follow-up status of a tertiary pediatric oncology center. METHODS: Records of 1799 patients followed up in the pediatric oncology division between January 1981 and December 2022 were evaluated retrospectively. RESULTS: Thirty-four (1.9%) cases of secondary neoplasms were identified throughout 42 years. The 5-year and 10-year cumulative incidence was 1% and 4%, respectively. The 3 most common SPNs were thyroid carcinomas (TC), central nervous system (CNS) tumors, and leukemias. Th

Risk of second primary malignancies in survivors of pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms from 2000 to 2018.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: As a result of improved survival, cancer survivors continue to remain at risk of developing second primary malignancies (SPMs). However, the association between first primary pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PanNENs) and SPMs has not been thoroughly investigated. METHODS: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-18 database, patients histologically diagnosed with PanNENs as their first malignancy between 2000 and 2018 were identified. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and excess absolute risks per 10 000 person-years

Primary Lung Adenocarcinoma as a Second Neoplasm Following Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia: A Case Report.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and its variant, small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), are common adult leukemias characterized by the accumulation of mature monoclonal B lymphocytes. CLL primarily involves peripheral blood, spleen, and lymph nodes, whereas SLL predominantly affects lymph nodes. Patients with CLL/SLL are at increased risk of developing second primary malignancies, including lung cancer, highlighting the need for ongoing surveillance. We report the case of an 83-year-old man with a history of CLL/SLL who developed pulmonary adenocarcinoma. He presented weight loss and constituti

DNA repair gene polymorphisms and risk of second primary neoplasms and mortality in oral cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: We tested the hypothesis that polymorphisms in genes involved in DNA repair pathways are associated with the development of second primary neoplasms of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT), as well as mortality, in patients previously diagnosed with oral squamous cell cancer (OSCC). METHODS: DNA specimens from 279 OSCC patients who had participated in two previous population-based case-control studies were assayed for the following polymorphisms: X-ray repair cross-complementing (XRCC) 1 Arg399Gln, XRCC3 Thr241Met, xeroderma pigmentosum complementing group D (XPD) Lys75

Development of high-grade glioma as a second malignant neoplasm in patients treated for primary brain tumors.

PURPOSE: Second malignant neoplasms (SMNs) represent a devastating late complication of central nervous system (CNS) tumor, particularly in pediatric and young adult populations. While improved treatments have increased survival rates, the risk and characteristics of SMNs in contemporary cohorts remain poorly characterized. The purpose of this study is to characterize the clinicopathological and molecular features of therapy-related high-grade gliomas(t-HGGs), and to explore their multifactorial etiology involving radiation, chemotherapy, and potential genetic susceptibility. METHODS: We anal

Spontaneous and Radiation-Induced Chromosome Aberrations in Primary Fibroblasts of Patients With Pediatric First and Second Neoplasms.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether former childhood cancer patients who developed a subsequent secondary primary neoplasm (SPN) are characterized by elevated spontaneous chromosomal instability or cellular and chromosomal radiation sensitivity as surrogate markers of compromised DNA repair compared to childhood cancer patients with a first primary neoplasm (FPN) only or tumor-free controls. Primary skin fibroblasts were obtained in a nested case-control study including 23 patients with a pediatric FPN, 22 matched patients with a pediatric FPN and an SPN, and 22 matched

Radiation-response in primary fibroblasts of long-term survivors of childhood cancer with and without second primary neoplasms: the KiKme study.

BACKGROUND: The etiology and most risk factors for a sporadic first primary neoplasm in childhood or subsequent second primary neoplasms are still unknown. One established causal factor for therapy-associated second primary neoplasms is the exposure to ionizing radiation during radiation therapy as a mainstay of cancer treatment. Second primary neoplasms occur in 8% of all cancer survivors within 30 years after the first diagnosis in Germany, but the underlying factors for intrinsic susceptibilities have not yet been clarified. Thus, the purpose of this nested case-control study was the invest

Second Primary Malignant Neoplasms After T-Cell-Engaging Bispecific Antibody Therapy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

IMPORTANCE: T-cell-engaging bispecific antibodies (BsAbs) are increasingly used in B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and multiple myeloma (MM). As these agents transition into earlier courses of therapy and broader clinical use, understanding their safety profile is critical. While second primary malignant neoplasms (SPMs) represent a key long-term safety signal, small sample sizes, single-arm trials, short follow-up, and heterogeneous reporting have limited reliable estimation of their frequency. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the frequency of reported SPMs after BsAb therapy and evaluate whether st
